2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

I still can't believe that of all amazing skaters we saw this weekend only three will go to Worlds.

Russia needs 4 spots at worlds! Please!
Or better 5, because I cannot handle some of the girls not going :-/

I feel so bad for Guliakova, Talalakina, and other seniors. So talented but will never get a chance on the big stage. They probably won’t even get Challenger events this season. Maybe, if they really want to, it’s time to switch countries?

I'd say Guliakova may have a chance for GP spots still, but she should work on 3A immediately.

She landed it in the past, she is with Mishin, that's her ticket (alongside big jumps she has) to move up on the ranking.

Same with Samodurova: she is in a better spot because she has the two GP spots, as long as she skates consistently she will stay in the mix but if she wants to have more chances for Worlds and Europeans, 3A is the way.

That said all Sambo70 seniors really stepped up their game in all aspects: jumps, physical conditions, Daniil-Eteri also worked on more sophisticated programs.

I hope they send different girls each to the euros and worlds.
This is absolutely against sport as it is.
What would FFKR do if all three succeeded at EC? How would they judge them against five others in terms of selecting WC team?

They cannot send three "jewels of the mob" to WC and send some other three girls to EC. Yes, actually they can, but is it fair? EC is two months before WC...

Aren't the Japanese doing it too like this, taking different girls to the main competitions ? At least didn't they do it last season and it worked. At least that way six girls would have a chance to get to one of the big competitions and not only 3l

4cc and euros aren't the same thing when it comes to the status of the competition.
European champion title is very sought after, it's an old competition too. 4CC was established only in 99 and never was nearly as popular as euros, which had all the olympic and world champions showing up every year.
4cc sounds like an alternative to euros, but it's just perceived differently. Hence, I doubt 2 different teams will be sent to euros this time.

You just explained exactly how I feel about 4CC, which I guess isn't really fair to the skaters competing there especially in recent years. That field is getting deeper and deeper overall, whereas right now at Europeans only the Ladies are super strong.

Still, I'm more bothered by GPF having a *much* lesser status than Worlds. There's a lot of politicking into who goes to Worlds, whereas only the best of the best reach GPF. So imo GPF medalists should be more praised than they are now.

And after all, Kihira and Sakamoto were both at 4CC and worlds this year, the only difference was Miyahara/Mihara. In this Russians were the same with Konstantinova/Medvedeva change (don't talk about reasons).

But there are other deductions for underrotations. Bad air position can have -1 to -3 deduction, according to the rules (obviously for Alena would be offset by her height/distance/transitions), but you need it for +4/5.

If Aliona has bad air position then I don't know what to say. :drama:

What? Pairs, ice dance? Are they stronger at 4CC, seriously? except chinese pairs most strongest pairs and ice dancers come from Europe.

Nah I didn't mean that. I meant they are getting stronger. - Compared to previous years where Europeans were completely where it's at.

It's like comparing coutries by percentage of GDP growth. Countries with low GDP look like skyrocketing when they grow a little compared to those who have high GDP.

Lol okay

I think it's arguable...
I think in first half of the season a lot of skaters are often a complete mess (and programs usually have things to work on), hence lower level but more consistent skaters get ahead of them. By worlds, all skaters are generally appear more prepared, with programs that are finally in their full glory.
It's also depending A LOT on luck, on who the skaters get assigned with, so it's barely a fair game. Case in point - Mai Mihara, who I think is a better skater than Sofia Samodurova, but Mai didn't manage to make it because of being assigned to a stacked field at NHK. And it was Sofia who made it into the top 6, not Mai. But I also think Mai deserved to go to worlds instead of Satoko, because I love Mai a lot. :o:
So I don't think that every single year top 6 at GPF represent the best top 6 skaters in the world. Sometimes, but not every year for sure.
I like that GPF does give more skaters from a single country to go out, rather than just 3, but I still think in terms of the event itself, it depends on the assignments and how skaters are prepared for the beginning of the season.

I give Mao Asada credit for raising the level of prestige of Four Continents. Previous to 2008 the very top skaters, especially Americans, just weren't interested. But from 2008 to 2013 Japan sent their very best. Mao competed 6 straight years winning 3 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze.

Interesting little factoid: The first ladies 4 Continents winner represented Uzbekistan (Tatiana Melinina), while last year's silver medalist was from Kazakhstan (Lil-bet T.).
