Alena Kostornaia

This is brilliant news! I’m going to IDF in a few weeks and this has put the icing on the cake for me! So excited to see her live. I love that this was kept under wraps! Wishing her the best this season! [emoji178]

For real and dedicated fans of Alyona, a very thorough analysis of her signature program as a junior "Dos Cadenzias": https://www.sports.ru/tribuna/blogs/alenakostornaia/2278678.html

A very long read, I don't know if it has been interpreted here before, I might try my hand at it over the weekend.

Analysis like these and the ones by Art in Sports of the 2019/2020 programs of Khrustalniy's Amazing Aces give you real insight in the thoughts and determination that went into the stagings by Gleikhengauz and Tutberidze.
And the efforts by Dudakov and Zheleznyakov in physically preparing and teaching the skating skills and jumping required.

OMG OMG What a day! :drama:

Where do I even begin?!

Well, some of you may recall that I was kinda disappointed with Aliona's performances at the test skates, since it seemed like she had made only minimal progress compared to Anna/Sasha AND she was basically skating 1 old and 1 semi-recycled program (see my comments below)...at the time, I really hoped that her seeming lack of progress was really because she was perfecting the 3A...

But I am super puzzled as to what exactly she worked on over the summer. The music for her FS is basically her EX music plus the "Meadow" music at the beginning. Some of the choreography is also the same as her EX. And her SP is basically identical to last year. She barely had to learn any new choreography.
So what exactly was she working on?Fixing the lutz edge? Working on the -1Eu-3S combo?
I mean, I'm glad that she did that, but all the other Eteri girls have two new programs this year, so I'm kinda puzzled about what's going on with Aliona. I *really* hope it's because she's been working hard on that triple axel

...and it looks like that's exactly what Team Tutberidze was doing!! :yahoo:

Yesterday, I have to admit I was feeling super nervous about Aliona's chances at Finlandia Trophy. I was really worried that the judges wouldn't reward her with the PCS and GOE she deserves because she's a newbie senior, which would make it really tough to beat Liza. And if she couldn't score close to Liza, I was really concerned that Aliona would be stuck at #5 in Russia (behind Alina/Sasha and Liza/Anna). :sad21:

But then when I woke up today and checked my phone, I was like :eeking: :hap57:

Now I'm not even worried! Sure, Aliona may not land her 3As cleanly at this competition, and the judges might hold her PCS down, but I'm not so concerned! Even if she doesn't do too great at this competition (but of course I hope she slays), she has proven that her POTENTIAL score is much higher than people previously thought--high enough to make the World team for Russia and even contend for that World gold medal. :agree: And because of that, I think the judges will give her decent PCS, or at least better PCS than if she didn't show the 3A at all. Yes, folks, I think this is a game-changer!

But don't take it from me! See what some of the professional commentators said:

Ted Barton on Aliona's 3A:
Okay that is awesome. PC’s and tech beginning to equalize. Watch out......she will play such an interesting role this season.

And I knew Max Ambesi would definitely say something about it!

Tomorrow, on the occasion of the Finlandia Trophy of Espoo, the competitive season of Alena KOSTORNAIA, one of the many high-level skaters who train at the renowned Eteri Tutberidze school, will begin.
The sixteen-year-old Muscovite, after having won the last edition of the Junior Grand Prix circuit, seems intent on playing all her best cards also upstairs.
As can be seen from the video, KOSTORNAIA has, in fact, "magically" regained control of the triple axel, which in her hands could become a lethal weapon.
In the current season, many athletes have unsheathed the triple axel or something similar, but, to find a comparable quality, it is necessary to look at the male sector.
We will see some good ones.

Best of luck to Aliona tomorrow!!!
SLAAAAYYYY baby SLAAAAAAY!! :hap10:

Just saw Aliona's 3A and wow! It's so beautiful and powerful, I'm in awe. Best of luck in the competition!

Now I'm getting a little greedy but is Alena practising a quad too?

4T could be possible, her 3T is effortless and huge.

I think 4 Salchow could be possible as well. I noticed how big and beautiful her 3 Sal was during the summer ice show.
But she doesn't need to hurry, at first let's tackle those gorgeous 3As in competition.

to be honest, at test skates ALL of her jumps looked bigger and "roomier", at least to me. Not just Sal, flip and Lutz were huge, and the improved edge on the lutz? Amazing!
But I agree, let's not get greedy  with stable 3A she's a threat to pretty much anyone, maybe except Alexandra.
So right now, keeping and working on her 3A is the best strategy. But I'm sure we'll see a quad too at some point. If there's a place to learn those jumps, Aliona is just at the right one.

I was worried she'd get the third place at NHK, but if she'll have 3 3A, she's contending for gold!

Best Triple Axel of all time. Case closed. If/when she gets consistent quads, she has the potential to become the GOAT. Easier said than done though, but I'm hopeful.

Her planned content for the SP has a 2A to start, not a 3A. We will see what she ends up showing us today, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are taking it slow with integrating the 3A into the program. On the other hand, how many times did we see Sasha’s actual content be totally different than the planned content she submitted to the ISU, so who knows.

If she just does 2a in sp today no need to freak out, she’s definitely planning two in lp:thumbsup:

Her LP works a lot better with the 3As... I found it a bit boring at the test skates.

i wasn't so sure about it at first, but it's growing on me now. i like how different it is. In the runthrough yesterday she looked a lot more comfortable with the choreography and interpretation than at test skates, since it's a different style for her.

No 3A in Alyona's SP; she got 77.25 for it (TES 43.11; PCS 34.14). :clapper:
