Evgenia Medvedeva

I don't understand quite where she lost the levels on her flying sit spin, as that looked very good to me, but what do I know about skating and judging?

Performing a sit spin at the required level of knee- and ankle-bend with your foot in a vice ....

Don't be daft. Fans are just fans, useful for holding banners or throwing plushies. But no matter how we think of ourselves, for the skaters we are far less important than their home club, federation, sponsors, business and society contacts, show promotors. Outside of the small world of figure skating, nobody knows their names.

Sambo-70 is Medvyedeva's home club and Russia is the federation she proudly represents.

I believe that Zhenya's relationship with Sambo 70 today is purely bureaucratic. She must represent a club in order to compete and continues to represent the same one she represented before. Beyond that there is no more relationship.

Sambo 70 doesn't care about Zhenya in the same way it does with ET girls. The same does RusFed. As an example, the letter sent to ISU not to call the girls only when they started calling the ET girls.

So, we are ignoring the PCS inflation from other skaters and everyone should be happy. :) The same thing happened also at the Russian Cup.
I do not know why the argument is coming about last Nationals...it has little or nothing to do with this season. Complete different situation and not compareable.

Can someone explain? What was the difference and why level 2?

Honestly? Unless I were sitting right in back of the tech panel and could see their feed, I wouldn’t criticize a tech call. As to PCS, Evgenia’s was the second highest of the competition. Should others have been scored lower? Probably. But I prefer to focus on the positives of what she did.

Sambo-70 is where the Ministry of Sports money is coming from and the accreditation. You better be wise not to bite the hand that feeds you in these kind of relationships.

And I don't doubt Yevgeniya's patriotism, she will rally to stand united if Sambo-70 is in any way compromised in the current struggle for supremacy in Russian ladies.
She'd have switched alliances long before if she and Sambo-70 felt in any way awkward with each other.

But matters of politics don't belong in a fan thread like this one.

Today, Yevgeniya earned the respect of the nation and most professionals that matter, and tomorrow she will do the same.

What kind of censorship is going on her?

----

From fso, it´s not only about this National. She must ask herself, does she have a realistic chance with a higher BV in the coming Nationals.. but her PCS stays on international level while the other have PCS inflation.
If they write a petition to Zhenya about moving to another federation, my signature will be the first. Trying to play by the rules in fights without rules is not only useless, but also irrational. The Federation is a faceless moloch; it will crush Zhenya and will not look back, and Zhenya has one life of her own. I don’t know how Zhenya is, but I can only hope that in her environment there are adult pragmatic people who see more than one solution. She will no longer have support for the federation. What is happening is similar to a court session where a person is trying to bring arguments in his defense, and the verdict has already been written and the judge is not interested in any of these arguments.

Performing a sit spin at the required level of knee- and ankle-bend with your foot in a vice ....

Was it different to international competition? And if not since when you a harsher at Nationals.

To me, Zhenya is the absolute symbol of strength and perseverance. Her character is stronger than any of these arbitrary elements and scores. That's what's most important to point out. I'm in such awe of her. I can't believe what she was able to do in the SP. Absolutely insane. I'm so grateful to her and I know everyone there is grateful for her, too.

I must say that I'm very concerned for the FS. I just want her to be healthy. Physically and mentally. I don't know what the right decision is here. I'm nervous but I will support her through whatever decision she makes and/or however she performs.

.... And honestly, I'm not going to tip toe around it. Zhenya was underscored. It doesn't matter if she visibly had some issues, it doesn't matter if the score was "fair" under different XYZ circumstances.

Was the score fair compared to how everyone else was scored? No. It wasn't. I don't care if they "correctly" called her levels or UR (which was extremely harsh, if not totally unwarranted). Nearly everyone else, IN THE SAME COMPETITION, were not judged to the same standard she was.

It's ENTIRELY unfair. Full stop. If everyone is not judged to the same standard, it's not "fair".

I'm so tired of the figure skating world throwing all of this to Zhenya. Can she please catch a break??? Please. Just for once.

Money-wise, I think Zhenya is one of the rare Figure Skater who are independent

Figure Skating is a indivual sport, not a Team competiton. Rally behind Sambo 70 in the current struggle for supremacy?:laugh2:

Same here. In my head she gets a clear level 4 for the following:
1. a difficult jump entry with 1 full rotation in the air,
2. three full rotations on the first sit position with less than 90 degree knee bend and fully extended free leg (difficult variation),
3. difficult change to second position on the same leg by putting her fully extended free leg behind the spinning leg,
4. 8 rotations in the second position.
It actually looks to me like she accelerated while switching positions.

If someone understands what exactly went wrong here please tell us
And I wonder if she didn't switch the edge to inside during the camel spin due to the broken boot...

Still, the spins had great timing with the music and looked cool :)

Hello, Vemvane. I think it is fair to discuss Zhenya's score here, relative to the others. I don't see anybody bringing other skaters down, rather stating their observations about the judging. Also, lots of us know that there cannot be any real discussion of anything related to Zhenya in RLT; soon enough certain posters will derail the discussion and point out that Zhenya did not bring her old coach flowers when she left.
Nobody discusses the flower situation anymore.

But yes the scores should be discussed. From what I've heard and I don't know the accuracy of it is that the judges were very generous today in general to everybody.

Here's the key question will it be a disappointment if Zhenya finishes out of the top 4? It seems very doable.

Medvedeva is cut from the national team. What the short program at the Russian Championships showed The main conclusion that can be made as a result of the short program - Evgenia Medvedeva virtually dropped out of the fight for the national team. And apparently, she is not considered as a candidate for it by decision-makers

Immediately after the announcement of the scores, there was a moment of amazement among the journalists. 36,80 on components - despite the fact that at the Grand Prix of Russia it was 36,66

For the camel spin, yes, there was no change of edge, I believe, that‘s why she lost the level. Her spins were very centered today, though, which surprised me considering how very visibly she was struggling with her boot. She was fighting hard. Such a champion. But I‘m still worried about tomorrow. Can’t anyone get her some new skates in time? :(

I'm aiming for no falls and Zhenya keeps her limbs and bones in tact.

Actually if she manages that I think she'll be top 5.

She's playing the long game here. She's gone through puberty and she's reworking her technique. Aside from being randomly cursed with the boot situation I think she's on a good path.

Jumps are fleeting in FS and I've seen so many skaters look like they've got invincible jumps until they suddenly can't jump anymore.

Zhenya is way past that. If she can hold on and steadily grow her tech she's going to be just fine.

I really think we should not be disappointed at all by this. We should be realistic here - Tuktamysheva and the Eteri girls have minimum 2 triple Axels. Their base value (with Zhenya's lutz edge call) will be much higher. Without them making mistakes...

It is possible for Zhenya to finish top 4 of course, but even if she finishes fifth it is a great accomplishment in such a difficult field that is Russian ladies FS. I think we all know that minimum the top 5 from Russia deserve to go to Euros and Worlds. Who on Earth is going to go from Kazakhstan? They got THREE places, same as Russia, due to Tursynbaeva's silver at Worlds (and as much as I know she herself is hurt). The system is no good.

I personally just want Evgenia to skate as clean as she can and get through this whole episode with the broken boot with no further complications or a really messy FS.

For the camel spin that was definitely the reason for level 3 and it is fair. But the sit spin I don't understand.

And her sit spin was indeed perfectly centered, she practically did not move. She should have gotten higher GOE on that too, as I see it...

Yes, I‘m still of the opinion that we were seeing some rather odd judging today. I think I would be more outraged if Zhenya had skated perfectly and there wasn‘t this whole situation with the boot. At the moment, and after the initial anger wore off, I can only think of her skates and whether she will manage to go through this competition without any injuries. That‘s all that matters.

She wasn‘t going to make the team this year anyway. Let‘s see what she can do next year. She‘s a fighter for sure, this one. She won‘t give up.

After recent events, any qualifying to describe Zhenya's courage, strength, determination and fight is few. I strongly believe that there isn't other skater who loves this sport as much as she does. I think it's her huge love for this sport that keeps her standing.

Regarding qualification, I honestly always thought that Zhenya was going to be underestimated in these nationals because it was necessary to do it. What I never imagined was that they were going to be lucky ? that a skate just broke so they could do it blatantly.

The score wouldn't be rubbish if all of them had been qualified with the same criteria. But as there is clearly a differentiated criterion for Zhenya so it's a rubbish score.

I sincerely believe that RusFed has long since stopped supporting her and is demonstrating it. Because they don't need her anymore. RusFed doesn't care about ladies single skaters, they consider them disposables. For RusFed it's more important a coach who constantly produces athletes that make them win medals and when one of them break is thrown and replaced by another. ET created a system that for her (in terms of prestige and money) and for the RusFed suits and works for them and the RusFed is delighted to deliver the national team in her hands. Only ISU could stop this by raising the age to compete in senior but they have also surrendered to this system and are delighted.

This whole matter of the broken skate is very confusing and hopefully it was a coincidence. Otherwise it would be very serious. And the fact that Zhenya went to the store with her coach to buy others is even more incredible. It seems to me that in such a case your Federation should has helped her and clearly didn't.

We know that Zhenya is a fighter but I also ask myself how many vicissitudes an athlete endures in her sports career. Because for three seasons she has been in a constant test with hardly any respite. I know that she isn't the only athlete who goes through this of course. There are thousands of examples in the history of sports. But the issue is that in addition to her career as an athlete, the athlete represents a country. But if that country which the athlete gave so much glory and raised the flag so many times and many times alone (not only in sports terms, but also political) betrays you at the most important moment of your career and doesn't lose the opportunity to show you that they don't need you, is it worth continuing to represent it? I'm not Zhenya and I know she would never consider this option. But do you think that if there wasn't a broken skate there wouldn't be the same criteria to rate her differently compared to other competitors. It's impossible to fight against such a system. And it's useless to represent a Federation that doesn't deserve you and doesn't want you to represent it. For me the message that the Federation is giving Zhenya is very clear.

If Zhenya's goal is to reach the Olympic Games and continues underestimated in the next nationals, even without a broken skate and skating incredibly, how is she supposed to get there? Even if she doesn't reach the Games, she may also won't be able to make the team either in Euros or in Worlds. And I don't talk about this season because this season was ruled out even with a healthy skate. I speak of the future. Is it worth that the sports career of an athlete of Zhenya's level would be reduced to some GP events and nationals in which will finish all her seasons? If I were Zhenya I would seriously think about competing for another country because ultimately what is at risk is her sports career. But I am not her...

This is an amazing post and you brought the sledgehammer for the Fed! Not sure that's entirely fair but your points seem fair so who knows. I had to drink my bud light orange beer to think about this one post and in particular the questions you posted at the end. I don't think she would ever compete for another country certainly not Canada a major rival for Russia in figure skating and hockey for many years now. Evgenia would be a perfect fit there but I just can't see it happening with Canada. Maybe there is a very outside chance they could happen with Armenia where her father was born and I don't think Russian people would go crazy like if she got citizenship in Canada. I think she can stay competitive for a few years whether she learns quads or not. We also don't know if there was any lingering hurt and Damage Done to Zhenya when she decided to leave sambo-70 and train in Canada. For most people were fair and understood why she needed to go but there were a lot of people that gave her hell over it.

Tomorrow should be fascinating on how she does with her damage skates in the free program. That was an amazing performance today skating with bad skates damage skates whatever it was. It should be like asking Rodger Federer or Serena Williams to play at Wimbledon final with a racket they've never played with before or a damaged racket. Lol. That would never happen of course.

I agree with your entire post especially how the system is no good and that freaking Kazakhstan gets three spots like Russia does for euros. The ISU needs to do something to make it more like tennis and golf wear those producing and a certain season get to go to events. If Russia and Japan or America or whatever country have that advantage and a certain discipline then they need to be rewarded for that better than they already are. My thinking is if evgenia can surpass Liza 4/4 then she becomes the alternate for Europeans and worlds which is fairly important. But for sure 5th Place where the great talent top to bottom with a Russian ladies is a very nice achievement even for someone like Zhenya who has done so much.

I'm just afraid of her doing SEVEN jumping passes tommorow. I dont think it's worth it. Do Rnats decide funding?
On a purely selfish note, I'm happy she's switched to the ice fly(if they are her permanent boot). I think they look a lot better than the pianos
