"Legendary" music/programs

I seem to be on a music kick lately, lol. This goes along with my other thread. What do you think goes through a judges head, or what goes through your head as an audience member, when you hear the opening notes to a program that was a skater/team's trademark? Do they, or you, think "this can't possibly be as good as the "origional""? or do you think "here's a new take on an old classic"?

I'm not asking specifically about overused music. That one has been hashed to death, IMO. I'm talking about programs to music like Bolero or the Gladiator.

IMO, it would depend upon whether the music is being re-used in the same discipline wherein it became "legendary". For example, I doubt that judges thought of T & D when Plushy used "Bolero" as an SP (and when they saw MK, I am sure they were thinking more in terms of "what's wrong with her?" than they were thinking in terms of other skaters) When some version of "Bolero" is used by an ice dance team, though, I think comparisons are more likely to be found.

And then there's CARMEN. It is sooo legendary in figure skating. Can anyone decide which one was the best? For me, it ws Evan Lysacek.

Has anyone attempted to use The Man in the Iron Mask since Yagudin? He owned that music. Talk about legendary.

A/P own that music  to me anyway.

You mean Anissina and Peizerat right? Yeah that was an awesome program they did (and right after Nagano too, so I wonder if Yagudin had inspired them to use the music), and it's too bad they didn't win the World Championship that year, but when I saw Krylova and Ovsyannikov perform right after A&P I knew the Russians would win, because even though the audience response was less enthusiastic for them, I just knew they had skated their heart out and it was a much more technically demanding one than A and P's. Sorry for digressing!

I think that Michelle's Lyra Angelica and Salome are both legendary programs, as well as Evan's Carmen, Shen and Zhao's Turandot and Sale and Pellitier's Love Story.

A good case in point is Janet Lynn's program "Afternoon of a faun" by Debussy. As soon as one heard the first strains of music one was taken back to that magic moment when Janet skated to the music. Even today when I listen to this music I can see that program.

I think it is probably more difficult for the skater or skaters who are using the music for their program to get past the stigma of a "legendary" piece than it is for the judges. It also depends on how long a time gap has been since the piece was used.

I believe Yuka Sato skated to Janet's music in a pro event and she was nervous because Janet was one of the judges!!!! Yuka did a great job. I think Janet was pleased.

Bolero has been used by many skaters, but certainly will always be identified with Torvil and Dean. Firebird will always be Toller Cranston's legendary piece. No one can skate to it like he could.

I think time is the biggest factor when it comes to music and figure skating. Many of the skaters new on the scene would not have been around to even see these legendary skaters so the music is fresh for them and probably for most of the judges.

Though we fans love to cling to the memories of the past it is always interesting to see how a new skater moves to a piece.

As a G&G fan, I know I automatically compare any pair team that uses "Moonlight Sonata" to G&G. But, I don't compare today's pair teams to the Protopopovs, who also used "Moonlight Sonata" in a legendary performance, because I wasn't born when they skated to it. So I guess it's all a function of whether you know of the original performance, and feel that it is legendary.

Yagudin inspired A&P to use MITIM music? It was Anissina & Peizerat that skated to it a couple years ealier than Yagudin.

Hey, that is nice!
I agree!

Love Story will forever, in my mind, belong to Jamie and David, no one can match or beat it... When Shae and Victor skated to it I was so disappointed because it just didn't even come close to being as good.

Casablanca belongs to Kurt...

Who would dare to skate to Wagner but S&P and how well they interpreted that sensuous music.

I don't know if any skater has used Wagner in the past. IMO, only a mature skater could tackle his music.

Joe

I'm pretty sure others have used Triston and Isolde...

ETA - though now that I think of it, I think those that have used it in the last couple of years used the movie soundtrack... not the actual opera...
