Albena Denkova in Russian show with new partner

Sofia Echo, 9/14/07, says: "Bulgaria's double world champion figure skating Albena Denkova will take part in the Russian show Ice Age of the ORT TV channel with her new partner, Russian showman and actor Igor Vernik....."

I think this Russian 'show' may be similar to the U.S. show, "Dancing With the Stars." Does anybody know?

Here is the complete link to the short article:

In terms of the Ice Age show, yes, it is pairing a skater with a non-skating celebrity. It is not Albena dumping Maxim for a new partner, it is her taking part in the show, like 15 other skaters with "new partners"

Thank you, Kasey. The caption of this article is, indeed, misleading.

Just wanted to add to what Kasey said that the show has had unbelievable success in Russia last season. There are actually two competing shows - Ice Age (formerly known as Stars on Ice) and Dancing on Ice. While both are popular, Ice Age is just through the roof. Its ratings are out of this world. It attracts the best names - the head judge is Tarasova, the two coaches and choreographers are Averbukh and Zhulin (an additional competition is between two coaches who each have eight teams), one of the hosts is Slutskaya (last season she co-hosted with Plushenko), and the roster consists of Denkova, Yagudin, Totmianina, Marinin, Navka, Kostomarov, Sikhuralidze, Lobacheva, Sakhnovsky, Petrova, Tikhonov, Drobiazko, Vanagas, Semenovich, Leonova, and Khvalko. BTW, the competing "Skating with the Stars" boasts Bestemianova & Bukin, Moiseeva & Minenkov, and Bobrin as judges/ producers, and skating roster of Tchernyshev, Anissina, Gritchuk, Petrenko, Rodnina, Urmanov, Grushina, Goncharov, Kazakova, Dmitriev, Klimova, Ponomarenko, and others (they actually had Plushenko signed up, but he had to withdraw last minute due to the pain in this knee). In addition, the shows offer eligible teams an opportunity to showcase their programs - for example, here is a program Kawaguchi & Smirnov did for the Ice Age last week.

Obviously, Stavijski was supposed to take part in Ice Age as well. I believe Sakhnovsky was the one brought in as a replacement.

Wow, this bodes well for the future of Russian figure skating. If the whole country is into the sport at some level or other, that can't help but translate into competitive success down the line.

Is Sakhnovski  retired from competition?

Yes, the shows did raise Russia's interest in the sport. You have to give props to Averbukh, who has done so much for the cause - first through his touring show, now through this; also, let's not forget the Red Square Ice Rink, with a show he helped organize. Don't get me wrong, I know his motives are far from altruistic, but it is still impressive. BTW, last season's Stars on Ice were followed by a tour of 50(!) cities! The two shows final's viewership was at 42 and 36 percent!

Wow, looks next time you want to see the best ice show, you have to go Russia.

Well, we are talking here about dancing with the stars - meaning that those superb Olympians skate with actors, entertainers, etc. However, the overall level of skating was quite high anyway. Here is a link to Youtube page with the performances from the finale. Take a look to judge the skating for yourself. The winner of the whole shebang was Navka (with partner, skating starts at minute 2), followed by Zhulin, Tikhonov, and Kostomarov. (The performances of Berezhnaya & Sikhuralidze and Navka & Kostomarov on that page have nothing to do with competition - the show does feature some "real" skating as well.)

Rodnina is not a participant:yes:

I think Averbukh has done an amazing job. He read the climate of the public correctly and struck at the key moment. He has shown great insight and business sense.

In post #10 in this thread, I asked the question: "Does 'celebrity status' mean anything in Bulgaria?" I guess my question has been answered. What a shame.

According to this, there was a wrong letter used in the draft indictment:

http://www.focus-fen.net/index.php?id=n122612

In the US, many indictments refer to simply a violation of a statute, and statutes often have several subsections -- if Bulgaria is the same, they might have cited the wrong subdivision. If, in fact, it was only a draft of the indictment, there is still time for the error to be corrected before Maxim gets celebrity justice.

Once again, I find myself thanking "attyfan!" I hope you are correct.

You're welcome. Also, before we jump too hard on the assumption that Maxim is getting "celebrity justice", we need to find out what would have happened to a "non-celebrity" Bulgarian in a similar situation -- and so far the articles have been a little short on discussing other cases.

In the recent dust-up over Paris Hilton, for example, if she had been released after four days due to jail overcrowding, she would have served the same time most other people do in LA for similar offenses. The cries of "celebrity justice" came because she was released after four days, without court approval, claiming some sort of "health issue" -- and some special treatment in jail -- but the end result is that she did a lot more time than did most people in her situation.

Update - 9/26/07 . . . . .

"Maxim Staviiski has been officially charged with negligent manslaughter and causing aggravated bodily harm of a person, while under the influence of alcohol. The bill of indictment emphasizes that Maxim helped the victims after the crash...."

Article also says:
"Suspicions of a cover-up are surrounding the investigation into last month's crash...."
"...The case was assigned not to one but to three prosecutors in a row and Staviiski was questioned for the first time a whole month after the deadly crash..."

Also, in an article from Novinite, Albena says: "During the first three weeks after the tragedy I thought people would take us to the center of the city and lynch us. When I did go out, however, I saw that many people sympathized with us and were even supporting us," Denkova said in an interview for private Nova TV channel..."
