2020 Cup of Russia: Stage II

Kino is '80s rock, it's not modern. One problem with Russian rock is that words are comparatively important. If you don't know what Kukushka (Cuckoo) or Gruppa Krovi (Blood Group) is about, you might be left scratching your head since they are not generic love ballads.
I do :) I'm not a fan of generic love ballads, prefer this type of stuff! It's ok if it's 80s, the only 80s rock that has really been explored on ice is English-language. There's more to life than romance (which kids generally don't have much experience of anyway). And it tests the choreographer/performer's abilities more if they have to convey the meaning to foreign audiences who aren't familiar with the song.

I'm a bit sad about Mark Lukin :( hard splat on the 3F+3T, he didn't need to do that! Oh well, score is still decent (PCS underscored tho). He's in 7th but he has the highest base value in the free program despite being one of the youngest here. If he skates clean or even falls on one of the quad toes he'll definitely podium. I don't think he should do two though because it's better to play it safe. Anyway the kid has the best jump technique out of all and the best interpretation and performance ability along with Vetlugin. DId you see his lutz??

Agree Lukin performs very nicely in his SP, I remember that's where I first noticed him a few competitions ago. But then I was kind of disappointed by his LP because it had really frenetic choreo/quads which I guess he wasn't comfortable enough with to really to focus on performance. Hopefully he's gotten used to it by now, we'll see very soon!
Separately from PE/IN, Vetlugin's skating skills are still on another level from Lukin (or anyone else in today's field). His speed and smoothness don't really belong in juniors (and neither does that StSq4 with a fine GOE to boot). Just those pesky jumps! Crossing fingers and toes for him to keep it up in the free...

Thank you, didn't get to see Elizabeta earlier. She might not be the most competitive of her age group, but she sure makes me smile.
What do you mean by that? I think that going for a quad in FP is a sign of extreme competitiveness...

We'll see if Berestovskaya's quad finally goes well. She has been chucking the skill every time, and it sort of ruins the flow of her routine since she takes more than half a lap to set it up.

Gutsy girl nevertheless.

Today's free programs in both boys and girls are going to be interesting and exciting.

These are the streams for today, hopefully no dropouts anymore:

boys free skating

girls free skating

free dance

Oh yeah I caught up on the young man with the gold buttons, forgot his name but loved his program!

The camera guys sure are interested in this kid with the black shirt and gloves. Should we know him?

Wow the should have focused on Lev! A tied dyed bullfighter?!
