I think people are entitled to scepticism regarding Plushenko (or Eteri) and money...
Man I've never been happier to put someone on ignore. Too bad I can still get the gist of what was said in replies.

But did Edwin somehow miss Plushy's 20 years as a top skater who performed in countless shows and won countless medals. What do they think he was paid in, peanuts?!

I wonder why Daria's components were so low then :palmf:

What you say as a "revelation" is actually repeated here ad nauseam, despite people like nussnacker who reasonably and politely show the gaps in the logic.
Usacheva and Frolova - they are like two sisters. They are the same . Now take a look at Frolova's assessment and tell me again that Usacheva has low grades.

Judging Artificial Intelligence

True, true... But it seems a fairly simple coding challenge to exclude factors such as: Name of the skater; Name of coach, Nationality of skater and "newcomer" status.

If that is possible, then what biases would remain? Maybe the ISU technical committee meets at annual Congress to reassess: technical requirements, technical ideals, and latitude for allowable error (as applied to TES GOE).

Such a system could easily produce video or 3D digital modeling, which would be distributed to all coaches & skaters, to be applief as technical standards during training. The cost of these identical systems would be borne by Nat'l Feds, so a complete "digital judging system", complete with cameras and software, could be circulated around the major rinks during training, or set up permanently in a central location. This would allow skaters to test their performance against the "system" standard that would govern technical scoring for that year.

The greatest benefit of a digital technical "panel" might, hopefully, turn out to be that judges have more attention to turn toward the remaining subjective side of artistic sport, Program Component Scores.

With less to distract, the human judging panel could apply closer scrutiny to each individual component of PCS. This could help to avoid the blanket judging of PCS, wherein all five very different components tend to be scored in irrationally tight clusters.

When results were then displayed to the crowd in the K&C, even casual fans might be able to understand them more easily. This would be especially effective if less obtuse terms were used to identify the different components. ("What's the difference between Interpretation and Performance and Composition and Transition, again, please."). (You could even include a component called *Smile*.)

Of course, superfans, know these differences, but the easier it is to engage the casual fan, who only understands that "judging is scandalous", then the more the sport grows.

And because skaters love to wear sparkled, the motion capture dots used by an AI system would be easy to camouflage among the rhinestones and Swarosky pebbling of their costumes.

Opinions?

🤓 "I'm Dr. Science, I have a Master's Degree... In Science!" 😇
There’s other factors that would be more difficult to account for. For example, what are we considering to be the ideal axel? There’s two different equally acceptable ways to do it (where your leg sorta goes in the air first and you jump to it and where you don’t), is that accounted for? What about different body types? Was it programmed to judge an axel using examples from a body type like Anna’s and if so how will it judge skaters with different body types (think Wakaba, Bradie, Mae Bernice)? Will they inherently get slightly lower GOE because their body types mean their axels don’t match what the machine sees to be a standard axel?

Don’t get me wrong I think moving towards machine judging is a good thing, but there’s so much that needs to be taken into account and so many ways that bias can unintentionally make its way into it.

Konstantinova still enjoys the TAT bonus?

Not really sadly.

Well i'd argue she used to have more transitions with Chebotareva, but her combo in the short was probably the biggest 3-3 i've seen from her in a long time, and compared to last season this last outing was a huge improvement.

Sounds like at the end you evaluate a skater rather then his actual performance.
I don't think I do. Because at the end of the day, the reason I like a skater stems from a performance (for example, Daria because of the Moscow City Championships, Marin because of 2017 WJC, Sasha because of 2017 JGPF, Alyona because of 2017 JGP Poland). But maybe for Daria I really do evaluate based off her skills, taken away from choreography or music, because the choreography (at least this season) is really not very good. Here, I'll evaluate her performance of the SP anyways:
  1. She really holds out her movements and takes her time in the opening choreography. She actually holds her movements, at least to the point where they don't looked rushed, everywhere. It's really nice to see and despite pretty cluttered choreography, she still manages to make it look easy and neat.
  2. Her arm movements are super nice, they are graceful, and plentiful, without looking like she's waving them around.
  3. lovely transitions into and out of 2A (though I like the spread eagle better)
  4. Wonderful transitions into the 3Lz too, the split jump has a lot of power. Of course, 3Lze, but we all know that.
  5. Spins are all great, pretty centered, a lot better than last season.
  6. Her arms in crossovers are so nice, they stay stable and constant and don't move around.
  7. Good spiral, though I do dislike how she kicks her leg into the flip.
  8. An amazing ina Bauer, that goes right along with the music! I love how she can get her back so bent despite the ina bauer lasting like a millisecond long.
  9. Wonderful speed in the step sequence.
  10. When the music begins to soften in the step sequence, her movements get a lot more soft and slow, and like tentative (but in a good way).
  11. Really good posture overall, especially in the step sequence.
  12. Overall really great movement with the arms, and upper body.
  13. Her skating skills are really great too! Good speed, good control and wonderful flow.
  14. She does a wonderful job of building intensity as the music builds as well (especially with arm movement).
  15. I also really like the twiddles in which she has her arms above her head, really shows her wonderful posture.
  16. Could do with less one second spirals in the step sequence though. And when the song sings "why live life from dream to dream", the leap could be higher and a little more dramatic.
  17. The movement she does at "when dreaming ends" is super pretty.
  18. Actually, doing this made me like her SP so much more! Thank you!

The acme of the smile-at-all-costs reflex to me this was the commentator (an ex-skater herself, to boot!) who wished that Yulia L "would smile" for a performance around mass genocide, separation, bereavement. Just how enslaved can a person be, to the fashion of the times?
There's a bit of a double standard among the genders when it comes to the smile-at-all-costs thing in North America. I don't think Jason Brown smiled at all in his Schindler's List programme last year and nobody complained (because obviously it was appropriate). Or it could be a nationality/age thing. Anyway Tara Lipinski (I guess that's her?) isn't really known for illuminating commentary.

Funny thing is that you are obviously strongly convinced there is "Eteri bonus". Like Stanislava's PCS was 68, Daria's 70, Sasha's 71 and Kamila's 72. IMO if Stasya's components were 68, than Daria's should've been 78 and Kamila's 76 to preserve the adequate distance.
The judges simply could not give Camila such a large PCS due to multiple falls. You should know that. Although some of them still tried to break the ISU rules

I'm sorry, but ever since a few prominant skaters signed up for the Plushenko Academy, your posts -- once informative --have turned more and more into incoherent raving. :(
A little o.t.t., no? It sounds a bit like the sort of j'accuse a jilted lover might proclaim 🤭
Maybe we've been spoilt by a surfeit of "information? Surely Edwin may incoherently rave to hrs heart's content, as long as there are no transgressions. Others do! ...some without offsetting the raving with any information.

Fantastic improvement! I was expecting her to go down the Sotskova/Tsurskaya way but she really bounced back! Great to see.

As you know I'm the first person to blow up at attacks against Plushy, but this is truly the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. I'm not even angry, this is absurd. Yagudin is so utterly irrelevant.

He's always been a sore loser and ridiculously jealous of Plushy.

"No-one cares who is Russian National Champion" Says man who never managed it.

And Yagudin wrote the book on just lending your name to a school. His one is in Belarus and I think he bothers to show his face there once a year.
Yagudin used to be my favourite skater.... Until he started opening his mouth. First Jason Brown, then Adam rippon, and now his misogynistic comments on ice age.

That is stretching it a bit isn't it? I can't see Frolova and Usacheva comparable that way. Usacheva is way more talented in my opinion.
Actually, I do find them similar now that you say that. They are both very elegant and have wonderful posture. Both make wonderful use of arms in their programs. But I think because Frolova's programs are rather simple, she becomes rather forgettable. Usacheva has a little more ability to really perform in more dramatic songs, but then again, Frolova has never really gotten a dramatic song. Because you see, PCS isn't just "artistic ability" it's also SS, TR, PE, CO and IN. In terms of transitions, Daria is way ahead of Anna. In skating skills, they're similar, Daria would be higher, but overall not by too much. With more emotions and drama, Daria probably takes the lead in PE too. IN is similar levels. CO, I honestly don't know how to judge that one.

Honestly I may be a little angry because I replied to that post and told him to stick to his skill set - making homophobic comments.

I'm low key hoping he responds NGL.

So, what you are saying really is that Frolova is not as good because Usacheva has a better coach?

I love them both, but I agree with this. Anna has been making great strides and finding her own imprint since moving to SD, but Darya is quite a long way further advanced in skills and artistry, to my eyes.

It's definitely not your case, though it would be much better if people would not immediately start with "actually I consider Daria better at XY/more refined etc. than Kamila" in the moment when Kamila had not a perfect skate, it sounds purposive. Those who lose are easy targets.
Actually, there should be no problem with anyone saying Daria is better at XYZ/more refined than Kamila. There are others in this thread, who have been the majority for a while, who have gone on about how Kamila is better at XYZ than not only Daria, but her other teammates, all of the juniors, and seniors too :dbana: For years now, actually. That’s fine, too— just opinions.

Kamila did have a bad FS, but she had a great SP. After the SP there were many people (including myself) giving similar praise to Daria’s excellent qualities and ways that she shines compared to her teammate. There were also people giving huge praises to Kamila, and saying she’s the best skater in the world. Which, I certainly don’t agree with, but that’s a fine opinion to have. It goes both ways. It’s not personal against any other skater, or any other fan.

The idea that I, or anyone, should hold back their praises of Daria, or not talk constructively about what we saw in competition, because Kamila had a bad skate, is absurd. Why are we on this forum if we can’t discuss our favorites? Why are we on this forum if we can’t discuss what happened at a competition?

Daria is my favorite junior, and has been since before she was a junior internationally, and I won’t be shy to praise her when she does well. I’m also happy many people, moreso now than ever, are outspoken about how lovely she is :) There’s no issue in any of this. If you chose to place bad intent in this, that’s your problem, not anyone else’s.

I watch Russians disproportionately more sbecause they are more readily available and now welcome audience to their national competitions, where I understand the language. But who I like changes from competition to competition and skate to skate, and I can’t say I have specific school I like more. I do strongly prefer upbeat and energetic ‘smiley’ athletes with youthful exuberance.

"Falls or serious errors" appeared both in Kamila's and Sasha's caase, you can comply in both cases about "trying to break the rules" ;)
Sasha has nothing to do with it. You missed the meaning of what I said. The Eteri PCS bonus did not work with Kamila in this case due to a restriction in the rules. If she fell only once, the PCS estimates would be completely different. Do you doubt it? You will see her at the next competition.:)
