Mao's New SP

I absolutely loved it. I've only recently started warming up to Mao, and the SP blew me away. It was lovely. Her step sequence was insane and her jump landings were so soft and wonderful!

me too, this girl is starting to grow on me.. and her dress is just right on the money. sooo pretty. :)

I do like Mao, and I'm kind of disappointed that I don't like her program...I think it must be the music...But Mao's spirals are  Especially that fan spiral, that's to die for.

Firebleeder posted on FSU that she got 4 Level 4's for the SP:

SpSq4
FSSp4
SlSt4
CCoSp4

I would be interested to know if she took a hit for her flutz, but even if she did I guess it's evened out by the extra points for the level 4's. So with a completed 3f-3l and these levels she should be online for a 70+ SP this season.

Honestly I can't stop watching it - one of the most beautiful programs in the CoP era.

that flutz was so obvious though. i think that she will get hit hard on that, i don't have a keen eye and i'm really slow on the uptake but it was just blatant. she didn't even mask it, it was like boom. flutz. there. whatever.

i'm not a fan of the music either, i just liked her step sequence, the intricacy..

http://www.skatingjapan.jp/InterNational/2007-2008/usavsjpn/index.htm Japan vs US protocols.

Mao and Miki's program was so good. So attractive choreo!!! Especially Mao's step sequence was so beautiful. She got the lv4.

But I felt confused when I saw their protocols. Miki fell her 3lz-3lo combo at first and 3f after step was great! And Mao didin't 3lo after 3f and 3lz from step did. However, the protocols are different. Am I under an illusion?

The Wrong Edge Takeoff (WET) (or flutz in this case) is an automatic -1 in the goes. However a skater gets full credit for the base value for the 'attempt'. If the jump has some virtues, for example: height, landing, posture, musical, etc.) the jump could get a +2 in the GoEs. The end result would be a +1 for the jump despite the 'e'.

The subjectivity of the -1 WET is up to the Caller and any other pluses (or minuses0 for the jump is up to the judges. A fan might see the 'e' in the protocols but it will not see why the jump got a +1 or even just the base value.

I really don't think Mao has to worry about this.

I think mao‘s new sp is good. She starts to use arms and shoulder. But the expression in her face is not enough to show this music. Her new dress is very dazzling and beautiful.
The steps in the new sp is most attractive, I love them!

My computer won't let me download the protocol...even after I tried installing the Japanese fonts! Is there any way you can post Caroline's and Mao's protocols on here. Pleas and thankyou

the link that was posted is too "how deep is the night " mao's beautiful exebition program. Here is her SP

I was dissipointed. It looked a lot like Miki's Mendellson Violin LP last year. That kind of dramatic stuff suits Miki, but even though Mao has gotten REALLY tall and grown -up looking, it just dosen't seem it suit her. Chopin was much better for her. I hated the dress, it looked like somthing Shizuka would wear. I guess Mao is trying to model her countrymen who had had success. I think that so much of Mao's wow factor is gone, the program looks pretty generic. The step sequnce is good, she will get a level 4 for that certainly, but as i said before all that drama and passion dosen't click.

Really? I could download the protocols after installing Japanese font.

Wow. The tech specialist here was really bad.

Mao's Layback was Level 3, got level 2.

Caroline's Combo Spin and Flying Spin were level 4, got level 2 and 3.

Miki's Flying Spin was level 3, got level 1. She didn't hold some of the things in her Combination spin long enough, and it got a level 1, but it should have been a level 2. Her Flip (she's not lipping anymore, btw) also had a +COMBO tacked onto it which shouldn't have been there (the Lutz was her combo...), causing 3 judges to give her a -3 for that element.

Here is Miki's SP...they cut out the opening of the program and the first jump for some reason:

The judging was way off...I can't believe Caroline got level 2 and 3 for her spins....did she not hold the positions long enough or something?? She also only got +1 GOE for her level 3 spin from two of the judges...the rest gave her +0,and I personally think the spin deserved more than that..she had a camel that changed edges, a sit spin that changed edges, a beautiful layback incorporated in it, and ended it with a good i-spin. Gosh....:disapp: and I'm surprised her foot work sequence got lvl 1...it was a little slow but level 1? Mao's layback I also thought deserved a higher level.....

Poor ladies...they prolly want to change their programs now...

Mao is the first lady to ever get Level 4 on a step sequence.

I'm sure the Level 4 footwork sequence will become more common and I don't really like it. Not many people can actually do it well. They have to slow themselves down too much to incorporate the billion different movements and the constant full use of the upper body.

Straight line footwork is no longer straight-line footwork anymore either. It's zig-zag line footwork.

Mao's unfinished

I wish Mao would work more on finishing her positions. She has beautiful posture through her back and shoulders but she needs to work more on the stretch and extension in her leg positions and learn to point her feet. Right now her skating looks rough and unfinished due to the lack of line and stretch in her leg positions.

First of all, I can't believe there are people who think that Mao did not skate with any emotion in her new SP. I thought it was stunning! I think she skates with more emotion than any of the current senior international competitiors (except maybe Yu-Na Kim). After you watch Mao skate, Suguri and Liang look absolutely emotionally dead! I do not like Liang's choreography at all. It is a beautiful piece of music, but there was absolutely nothing in the choreography that highlighted or did the music justice. As I said before, she has no feeling when she skates.

Interesting comment. There was another youtube clip of Mao doing ballet on point. It look very strange because she was not pointing her toes so it looked like she had flappy feet, but I thought, typical skater problem. Skaters are notorious for not pointing their toes.

Skaters are notorious for not pointing their toes.

Sasha Cohen, Caroline Zhang, Mirai Nagasu, Johnny Weir, Emanuel Sandhu, Naomi Nari Nam, Naomi Lang (and many others) prove that it can be done. Skaters can point their toes, even though they are wearing boots.

While watching these gals battle it out, I think Fumie shouldd do something about all those crossovers between elements. Her footwork was fine so she could spread a little of it around the main part of the routine.

Bebe could practice skating a little more carefully. She overrotated that opening lutz and fell. Several other jumps were just tossed around.and giving hooks to the landings. Overrotations spoils a jump just as much as an underrotation.

I just happend to watch Carriere and Flatt while on that click. Both are looking good. I think Rachaeilt jumps much better this year and is better at the jumps than Caroline..

Stephen is not just another jumping bean. He's really working the audience with his new found musicality. Those mannish hormones have gotten to him. Oh yes, about that triple combo.. the second jump was a Tano and the third jump a Reair? Two arms up, I've never seen before.
