First look at Weir's new Short Program

GoldMedalist;... maybe this will just be a year where he focuses on the technical -- getting all the big jumps consistent and maxing out his points as the CoP tells him. I'd actually maybe prefer that said:

:agree: Absolutely right! Unless Johnny seriously upgrades his technical capabilities, he'll be the most beautiful and artistic loser in the competitions. Not at all what I want to see.

I love this program for Johnny because he's comfortable with it and it brings out that fluid quality he has. I think he did great for his first time out with it and expect that he'll have a much different season than last.

A lovely skate for Weir, but it's not going to bring a crowd to its feet. Really, the music is bland and boring. A pity since there is so much great Russian music available.

In acting one has Sly Stallone (supermacho) and Lawrence Olivier (superelegant) Given those dfferences in skating I would say lyrical Johnny doesn't need to pretend he's a Gladiator.

Lawrence Olivier had a lot of force and power in his acting. Anyway...nobody is saying Johnny should be Gladiator. Just that artistic failures happen.

I don't think this SP is a failure but, just so far, it doesn't create the level of feeling that Johnny's programs have in the past.

I think the music would be more effective if the sound of the piano was softer and more melancholy. It's a bit bravura, imo. It's not audience-rousing in the Carmen, lets-all-clap-along kind of way, but it's not quietly moving like Valse Triste or The Swan, either.

That being said, the more I watch this, the more I like it. I think with some tweaking and more mileage, it could be great.

Yes. I was disappointed with the music after Johnny's obvious enthusiasm about it. For me, solo piano just didn't repeat the beautiful drama of the previous rendering (2005 World's exhibition with lovely vocal). Fortissimo piano simply cannot replicate full orchestration. But...I can learn to appreciate it, if it proves to be successful for him this season. After all, it's the interpretation by the skater that REALLY matters, isn't it?

I think Johnny's SP is in it's early stages and this showing in Yokohama was a dress rehearsal for a very interesting routine, imo. It will only get better by the time he skates in China. The big thing for me, is that he seems focussed this season and forgetting about Kathy Griffith.

Taking into consideration that this was the debut performance of Johnny's new SP, I have to say I like it. Clearly, the program needs some fine tuning (as most new programs do), but I certainly wouldn't write this one off immediately after one initial performance. I think that would be foolish considering the changes we will inevitably see in all of the skaters' new programs.

I'm willing to wait and see how this SP progresses. From what I remember, The Swan was a bit rough on the first few skates as well, and a lot of us (I hope) can agree how gorgeous that program turned out! :agree:

Nice understanding post and I agree with you.
