Maybe Sasha isn't doing a 4T not because she's injured, but for base value. As everyone here points out, she can't beat Kamila on spins and PCS, so if they're both only doing two quads, maybe she's hoping the higher base value (which I don't know) will give her an edge. I'm surprised she's not doing 3 quads, I think she needs it, especially if KV lands her 3A.

Well if Trusova's only going for 2 quads I don't see her beating Shcherbakova or Valieva if they are clean, Shcherbakova's quads have outscored most of her quads this year, the flip is only .5 less in BV to the lutz, and both Shcherbakova and Valieva will outscore her on PCS and GOEs on spins and step sequences.

Sasha was injured at Rostelecom, Plushenko said so in an interview. I wonder why she still went for a million quads then but oh well. At least now they‘re changing the strategy, though I‘m worried that she won‘t be able to win unless the others make mistakes. Without a 3A in the SP, she‘ll go into the FS with at least a 10 points deficit to Kamila, who, I‘m sure will break Kostornaya’s Nationals SP record if the judges are given any chance at doing so. She also has 2 quads in the FS and gets better GOE on spins and steps. Same for Anna. With all that, I don‘t think Sasha can win against either of them if both are clean. Also, that 3Lz+3Lo is still there and it scares me - it‘s been so inconsistent this season. The 4Lz with rippon looks great, though, and that comes from someone who generally dislikes this whole rippon-quad mania going on right now. I hope I‘m wrong about counting Sasha out for the Gold because I‘m really rooting for her.

Anna‘s somewhat of a dark horse, though I find it funny how many are counting her out again. I‘m not a fan of hers but come on, you all must have noticed that whenever people do this, she tends to prove them wrong big time. So, given that it‘s the same tune as the last two seasons... expect her as your National Champion.

More seriously now: Seeing the videos from her training, it looks like she‘ll be going for two quads. (4F+3T and 4F, I guess?) Makes me think that the 1TV interview was filmed early after her coming back to the ice and that she‘s doing much better now. Maybe it‘s part of their strategy, too - create low expectations for Anna and focus the hype on Sasha vs. Kamila only for her to go out and stun everyone. It‘s been known to happen in the past.

Kamila is Kamila, there‘s not much to say about her. If she‘s remotely clean with less than 2 falls, she wins. If not, then the others have a chance.

Liza is a big question mark because she’s had the least time to recover. If she lands three 3As, she‘ll be in the mix. I‘m thinking her goal will be to either beat Sasha again or Anna, to make a case for the Worlds team.

I dreamt tonight that Daria would win Silver (after Sasha and in front of Anna lol), so hopefully it‘s a sign that she‘ll do well. She‘s very consistent this season and while she‘s not doing any ultra-c elements, she tends to get high GOEs on everything. She doesn‘t stand out as much among her rivals (I partly blame the bad programs) but she could play spoiler if one of the others falter. Which, given the risky elements Sasha, Kamila, Anna and Liza will try, isn’t all that unlikely. I definitely predict a podium spot for her, though I think Bronze is the most likely.

Maiia‘s a wildcard. I saw a video of her doing a pretty good 4T but she‘s so inconsistent that you just never know. I guess she does have a shot at the podium but it‘s a veeery long shot. A lot would have to happen and because it involves most of her rivals failing, I‘m not hoping for it at all. Sorry.

I think no one else is in contention, realistically. Though I am hoping for good skates for Nugumanova, Talalaikina and Konstantinova.

I do have to say that my excitement for this competition has gone down vastly by the withdrawal of my favorite two skaters, although I‘ll still be watching and having my fingers crossed for everyone. I know my third favorite, Sasha, doesn‘t have much chance at victory without 3A and more quads but I‘m hoping for her to do well and get a spot on the podium. Come on, girl!!

Lastly, I wish a happy Christmas to everyone celebrating it and hope to see good skating as a present to all of us. :)

Pluschenko clearly stated in his interview two days ago (23 Dec) that Sasha had a leg trauma before GP and participating in GP made things worse. The trauma is a kind of sprain, not of bone/joint.
Rookie coach learning the hard way about letting students dictate what they do; if she was injured at the GP event he should have changed her program layout because based on his words, she's gotten worse and is now going into a far more important competition having to reduce layout where she can easily be beaten even if clean.

In what world would any lady be easily beaten if she cleanly landed 4 quads.

I think they‘re talking about RusNats where Sasha will apparently only do two quads. And it does place her at a major disadvantage because both Anna and Kamila have the same amount of quads and get better PCS and GOES on almost everything. I agree that letting Sasha do so many quads at Rostelecom while injured was insanely irresponsible and while I‘m glad they‘re changing the strategy now, I wish they‘d done it earlier... I really want her to win but I just don‘t see it against Kamila and Anna. :(

Totally agree about Daria. A clean skate from her can really shake things up. I'm expecting mistakes from the other three.

And Merry Christmas!

Maybe winning RusNats isn't as important to Sasha and their team than her health? If she does a clean 2 quad program and gets a good score she'll probably get a major confidence boost, and she'll prevent hurting her injury.
And it‘s definitely the right decision, no sense in pushing your body too far for a season like this. I was only wondering whether, if they‘d made that decision at Rostelecom already (where she looked injured and apparently was, too, according to Plushenko yet still tried 4 (or 3?) quads and a 3A), she might be recovered completely now. What’s done is done anyway, I guess, so I‘ll just have my fingers crossed for two clean programs and a medal for her!

I wasn't saying nationals was more important than her health but the GP event where her coach has apparently admitted she went into injured still attempted what 4 quads (which even if landed puts a great strain on an injury) and the injury got worse now she's at Nationals which is a more important event than the GP and based on practice she's doing a layout that her top competitors can beat even if she's clean as a whistle.

Did anyone have Sasha removing the 4T from the free layout on their Rusnats bingo card?

From the Instagram videos of the runthrough, Sasha's layout is

4Lz+3T, 4Lz, 2A, 2A // 3Lz+3Lo, 3F+Eu+3S, 3Lz

She didn't get the 3Lo out from the first 3Lz in the run-through, so she put it on the last jump instead.

I wasn't expecting her to go safe here (if two rippon 4Lzs counts as safe lmao). It really is anyone's game at this point.
Purely to play devil’s advocate, if she is injured, might they have her do a less ambitious run through so as not to aggravate the injury? If it is a sprain it’s more aggravated by short bits of intense repetitive use. Her quads look great in practice, so add them only in the final performance? On the other hand, what toe loops have we seen from her? Perhaps it is an injury to the right leg which makes holding that edge right before takeoff difficult and strenuous (like how Rika couldn’t jump the lutz last season)

The team girls together...

I think the coaches and Sasha probably didn't know how serious she was injured so they let her go all out for Rostelecom (which was really not a good decision at all). Now if they want her to have a chance at the podium they have to go for something reliable, but also not too extreme, which is what they're doing now. I do agree that her competitors are a lot closer to beating her now, but quads are risky and the ice is slippery, it really depends on who lands their jumps.

Also the videos of some of the quads by the ladies are super impressive. Sasha's 4Lz+3T is one of the most effortless quad combos I've seen, ignoring technique, it's probably up there with some of the greatest performed by anyone. I hope Maiia can land that 4T too, it would be a huge confidence boost and it looks quite nice in practice.

I think that was the only thing that worried me about the move, is that Sasha will do as many quads as she wants and it can potentially lead to an injury. Not saying it did, since it is unclear what exactly caused the said injury, but looks like the amount of quads might have aggravated it?
Perhaps, Plushenko/Mikhailov wanted to have less quads due to injury, but Sasha herself was insistent on having more, I can imagine that happening, knowing Sasha disliked being stopped last year.

Wishing her swift recovery and clean skates in the upcoming competition. Obviously, her health should be a priority. Perhaps, it (injury) is not as serious either, since they went on to compete here with still relatively strong content.
