2020-21 Japanese Nationals: Men's Free Skate

So, I may have gotten carried away when I estimated a 50 point lead over second. 35 points is close enough. And he led 4th place by 80 points. You could really see the hierarchical structure of the Japanese men's field in this competition. I wonder if the ladies will be something similar too.

Presuming Yuzuru keeps these program for next season (because why ditch a program if you only perform it once?), I'm curious what he's going to add to them. Some of his expressions were a bit blank and part of the skating was a little empty, but of course, you can only make these comments if you're comparing this to his other programs.
He'll add magic 🥰 These are the programs he chose at the end of last year, for himself, purely for himself. If he goes for Beijing, they'll be there with him.

Seriously folks, think about it. Nine months without a coach in the same continent, practising at night on his own, his additional worries over covid, his first competition since March and all new programs... and he does that.

Brian said it in 2018. Never underestimate Mr Hanyu.

That is among the most assured I have ever seen Hanyu since 2015. Damn.

The pandemic has actually done wonders for his training and conditioning. I wonder if it's because it's let him train completely in peace and at his own pace, without having to undergo the grueling GPF cycle.

I'm not complaining about Yuzuru's program, it's the first outing. It seems a bit one note at the moment, but I'm just so happy he is doing something new, I would take anything. And a huge score, wow. Well done....

I'm sure he doesn't have to undergo the grueling GPF cycle ever again if he doesn't want to.

Yuzuru thanked his coaches in the KnC, but I think he only needs Pooh as a coach. If that is what he produces after not being there for 10 months without them.....

Protocols are up. Eat away.

Random thoughts:
1. Yuzuru's last spin got a V. Youch. He won't be happy with that.
2. How many skaters get higher GOE on a quad than on a triple? Yuzuru's 4Lo got marginally higher raw GOE than his 3Lo.
3. 4T-Eu-3S = 19.39 points. Wow. Who even needs the 3F?
4. Yuma lost silver entirely because of his 3A mistake. Land the 3A-Eu-3S cleanly and he wins silver. The 4T error, in comparison, was tiny.
5. How do you jump a 1T<< !?!?!!?!?!?!?!?! I cannot help but laugh at that. Rip Shoma.
6. The GOE on Shoma's 4F was wild man. People gave anything from 0 to 4.
7. Just look at how many +5s Yuzuru got, and compare that to the field. It was a stingy panel, and he still got the GOEs for it.
8. Compare this performance to Yuzuru's 2019 SC free skat. That one scored higher by a point, but I think it wasn't the cleanest?

Well, that was Perfection with a Capital P.

Yuzuru's artistic side is just amazing. Just perfect to the music all the way.

But I wonder, why didn't he do any Lutzes or Flips? Has he an injury of some sort?

From what I have read, it was a deliberate decision to limit his (slightly) weaker ones to keep the skate squeaky clean, given his lack of coaching, competitions etc. Yuzuru calculates these things out precisely, he - like his fans - knew he was in a difficult place, and he was out to win.

In Poohniverse, TCC goes to him.
I mean, he skated two clean programs back-to-back for the first time since...
Training by himself, even arranging his programs.
With an intelligent layout. Jumps that he has high success rate on. No toe jumps (3F/3Lz) probably to let his injured foot rest.

He's doing fine with video coaching (if there was much video coaching).
