2020-21 Russian Pairs' figure skating

We don’t know what would have happened at junior worlds. As much as I like them, they are not quite the same level the past few junior world champion pairs had been. As much as I love A/N, there is no point winning junior world championships, moving to seniors (while not being quite ready) and then getting lost within Russian senior pair field. I prefer to keep A/N in juniors one more year, hopefully getting to the stage when they easily win everything that’s available and then moving to seniors when they are ready. At the moment, they won’t beat Panfilova/Rylov or Kadyrova/Balchenko, which means with a bit of luck they would be Russian pair number seven. That’s not very good when one wants some international assignments. I think it is better staying junior and having the certainty of of JGP, JGPF and junior worlds (plus possibly doing some senior B challengers), then moving to seniors and having only the challengers, no GP, no GPF and no worlds.
I agree, but that isn't to say being junior world champion isn't an amazing accomplishment. It could be the highlight of their careers.

I do believe they would have beaten Polina & Alexei at junior worlds cause Polina (as much as I love her, as everyone can see) has just about lost her triple jumps I would have been interested to see if their pairs elements could make the difference, with Yulia & Mikhail's signature throws and new 3S+eu+3S. It remains to be seen whether anything will remain of Artemeva/Nazarychev (especially their jumping) after Yulia's puberty. And you never know when that will kick in. If all go as planned, next year they will follow the plan you listed. But Kostiukovich/Ialin were also supposed to do that, and what happened with that. IT's amazing they managed to keep it going for so long because it was clear by 2020 that she had outgrown him. So that is why I say that this could have been Yulia/Mikhail's golden chance, but hopefully things will be fine next year.

Speaking of which, it seems like Kostiukovich, Galliamov, Volodin (retired?) and a few other skaters were at Georgy Kunitsa's birthday party today. Looked like a lot of fun but let's hope nobody was sick.

By the way, when Kadyrova goes through puberty, her jumping set (the most difficult in the world!) and the Kadyrova/Balchenko partnership will most likely fall apart. I don't wish this on them, and hope that it will hold on, but the reality is that it's unlikely. As strong as they are, the height difference just can't hold up. And of course there have been exceptions in the past, but Kadyrova is not Wenjing and Balchenko is not Cong.

Oh, really? Because Trusova and Scherbakova has not lost their quads as many ‘fans’ hoped, so why should Kadyrova lose her triples?

I would worry more about Balchenko than about Kadyrova! With his previous partner Khabibullina, it was often him who didn’t land the jumps. And yet the girl always gets blamed when a pair is not doing that well, and consequently he got a new (decent) partner, whereas Khabibulina had to accept a boy-pair beginner who is nearly of the same height as she is. And she is lucky she found a partner! Unfair, but that’s life!

I never hoped for anybody to lose their quads. I said that they might (and still might) which I think is a legitimate concern. I know that Kadyrova had a quad back in the day and her jumps are quite good, but she is the one going through puberty, not Ivan. The Perm coaches aren't known for fostering and helping to develop good technique through puberty, even if the foundations were built with another coach. I never said that Yasmina will or should (ridiculous) lose her triples, but it is a possibility that I hope they can work through. What I am saying is that like everybody else, she may struggle with puberty. Girl tend to struggle more with jumps than boys especially during puberty.

Well Russia still has 3 or 4 solid teams so they should be fine. Maybe no one who can really challenge the Chinese but they are still medal threats. I am kind of sad that Tarasova and Morozov have not really reached their potential. They need some good programs and to really work on their conveying a good relationship on ice. I am impressed that with the loss of Z and E they quicky had B and K. There is still room on the podium of course that might get harder if Savchenko comes back but I am doubting that.

we haven't seen Sui/Han in a while. I love them a lot but they have been injured a lot too, and it all builds up. Their jumps are also a real struggle. Now there is Panfilova/Rylov who can beat their pairs elements and match pcs, there is Kadyrova/Balchenko with the most difficult jumping set in the world, and then there is of course Mishina/Galliamov with 3-1-3. Boikova/Kozlovskii could have gotten close at worlds last year.

T/M still have time. Nationals proved that they shouldn’t have been written off. They seem to have turned a corner and they may very well, after preserving through so many struggles, peak at just the right time.

Yes! I'm so very hopeful for them! Sergei V has really helped, not just with the jumps but also Zhenya's mindset, she seems a lot more relaxed now, which is great.

Even Vladimir is smiling 🤗

I wonder if they'll go back to Florida once the season ends? I'm not sure they should, but did Marina choreograph their programs? They've been really good...

Hopefully Panfilova/Rylov gets outside help for their jumps if they haven't already. Triple jumps were also a problem with Pavliuchenko/Khodykin so they went to Eteri camp before their senior debut and came out with a triple flip.

I’m curious to see what they’ll do about Florida after the season is over. Max and Sergei seem to be the magic coaching combo for them, but they do seem to also enjoy Florida. I’m wondering if they may split their time differently between the locations.

Massimo Scali choreographed Bolero. Charlie White choreographed last season’s FS. John Kerr did the initial choreo for this season’s FS, but from what I have read, Max made significant revisions to the program. I’d love to see Marina actually choreograph for them finally.

Seeing them at Russian Nationals was so wonderful...I loved to see Sergei really perking Evghenia up (I think that was after the short especially, but of course the whole Kiss & Cry after the Free was a joy to watch whether if it were the skaters or the coaches).

I love P/R and their elements, but until they get their jumps they are non-factors outside of Russia. Maybe a medal here and there, but to fight with the top teams they have very little chance. Also, K/B are untried and untested, nothing else to say.

The four top teams are what we have now, and most likely for another cycle or two - P/K, M/G and B/K are young and could very well last another eight years.

Gossip from the Russian forum, Widsor is apparently in Russia. Someone reported that he is skating with Labazina. I wonder whether the federation will release her to skate for Australia. They should, considering they were willing to release her to skate for the USA.

Almost anyone would be an improvement from TJ. Good for her if this is true and Wouldn't the U.S. have to release her not Russia?

A new interesting interview. Nikolai Moroshkin is a young skating skills coach at Moskvina school, working with her pairs and Daineko's boys. The text is long, so I am posting a link and the translation of the beginning and the pair-related part here. You can find the rest with the men-related part on the Russian Men thread.
WHY DO SINGLE SKATERS NEED TO GLIDE IF THEY CAN JUMP, AND HOW SHOULD YOU PROPERLY LACE UP YOUR SKATES? WE TALKED TO A COACH IN TAMARA MOSKVINA CLUB

Nikolay Moroshkin about Boykova/Kozlovsky and Mishina/Gallyamov, the talents of St. Petersburg single skaters and the importance of proper skating since childhood.
27-year-old Nikolay Moroshkin, who was previously an ice dancer with Evgenia Kosygina, has become an integral part of Tamara Moskvina's club — he works not only with her leading and Junior pairs, but also participates in the training of singles of Veronika Daineko's group.

It is always interesting to talk to young coaches in top teams: a young specialist needs to be professional, confident and charismatic in order to impress an experienced coach who has trained more than one champion, and to be hired. The responsibility for a young coach in this regard is no less than for the athletes.

The Match TV correspondent spoke with Nikolai Moroshkin shortly after the resumption of training during the new year holidays. It turned out to be a dynamic sensible interview - in fact about work, but at the same time about a dream.

Why do single skaters need to learn to glide?

Whose program staged by Moroshkin we could see this season

What do ice dancing and pair skating have in common?

How to make students mind you when they are only a few years younger than you

What makes single skaters from St. Petersburg stand out?

Weak or strong — how to properly lace up your shoes. The opinion of the skating skills coach

Change a skater's wrong technique — is it possible?

«SINGLE SKATERS ARE FOCUSED ON JUMPING, AND MANY OF THEM DON'T PAY MUCH ATTENTION TO ANYTHING ELSE AT ALL. MY GOAL IS TO HELP ATHLETES LOVE SKATING SKILLS»
— How would you explain to someone who is far from figure skating what your job is? What does cooperation with a skating skills coach do for single skaters, for example?

— This is a very good question, I would like to get an answer to it myself. (He laughs.) In addition to working with them on choreography, I try to teach the athlete to love figure skating through skating itself. Single skaters are focused on jumping, while many people don't pay much attention to anything else — choreography, gliding, and spinning. My main task is to help the athlete love gliding. Show that it can be fun, can be easily obtained through technical methods, and can look cool.

Athletes and I try to be unusual in terms of movements during training, try difficult turns in the step sequences, head and body movements. My main achievement so far in the Department of single skating (I'm talking about Veronika Daineko's group at Tamara Moskvina's school. - "Match TV") during the time of my work is that athletes have fallen in love with skating skills. They can glide for an hour, they have a large set of technical skills, they are happy to demonstrate it. They try something and experiment on their own.

If the athlete doesn't give rein to imagination, he will not show his personality on the ice.

— Do you also work on competition programs?

— I staged a short program for Nikolai Ugozhaev this season. It is impossible not to mention the wonderful choreo of Nikita Mikhailov, whom we invite — he staged a short program for Pyotr Gumennik, both programs for Andrey Kutovoy, and a free program for Kolya Ugozhaev.

I work closely with all the guys on the step sequences in the programs.

The audience needs to understand that the composition is a template that is set by the choreographer and finalized by the coach. I would compare this to the fact that a choreographer sows a seed - an idea, and our task is to grow it. Over time, many transitions change, and more convenient steps are sought. Step sequences are adjusted from such a point of view that they can be clearly read by the technical team. In other words, as a skating skills coach, I have the right to intervene and change something, but we try to do it carefully, because Nikita Mikhailov works very well.

— Is there a specificity in work with pairs? Pair skating is closer to you in its meaning, because there is interaction between partners, as in dancing?

— It's really more like dancing, because skating between a boy and a girl is always about relationships and interaction. My work consists in the following: I choreograph programs for our juniors who have qualified for the championship, and I also work with our new couple Evgenia Tumanova/Georgy Kunitsa — a boy who moved to us from Tutberidze - I try to find new images for them. It's still a little easier for me to work with them than with singles, because I've been doing dancing all my life — transitions, step sequences, some kind of signature moves. It's great fun.

— If you take our two leading pairs Boykova-Kozlovsky and Mishina-Gallyamov, working with them I take part in program transitions. I suggest something, work it out, add it, but I don't stage it myself without the approval of Artur Minchuk and Tamara Moskvina. I also choreograph step sequences, and also work with them while they practice: I perform my dancing duties, in general. So that each step is executed synchronously and is technically correct.

— What are they like at work? I mean Anastasia and Alexander and Alexandra and Dmitry. So young, but already loved by the audience, with international awards. Boykova and Kozlovsky are actually reigning European Champions. Tell us about each pair, what is special about them.

- Nastya Mishina and Sasha Gallyamov joined us in the spring. Working with them is productive — you can see that the guys are hungry, want to win, and listen very carefully. They don't just listen to the comments of their coaches but use their intelligence and try to fix everything. In this regard, they are making a big leap forward, they are doing great.

Sasha Boykova and Dima Kozlovsky skate powerfully, train hard. When they perform elements, it's wow. And not only in competitions, but also in training, they do everything in a way we call "expensive". Their big plus is that they are already stately, synchronous, brought to a certain high level by Tamara Nikolaevna and Artur Minchuk. Together they are bright representatives of the St. Petersburg school of pair figure skating.

- Alexandra and Dmitry, in my opinion, even from the outside look like natural born Petersburgers — intelligence and dignity to a high degree.

- Exactly. So I think their short program is very suitable for them (to the music of Isaac Schwartz. - Match TV). When it is brought to perfection — and it will be - it will impress even more. But they also convey emotions well in the free. They have passion and fire.

— You have a very small age difference with your students. Does this cause any difficulties? How do you manage to make them mind you?

— I can say that I never even thought about it. We must pay tribute to the guys — thanks to them, we do not have such problems. They may not think that we have a small age difference, or they may just trust me as a specialist. They listen, do not allow themselves any unnecessary statements or bad behavior. They behave with dignity.

Almost anyone would be an improvement from TJ. Good for her if this is true and Wouldn't the U.S. have to release her not Russia?
I don’t think so, because she hasn’t competed with TJ internationally. If I understand that correctly, that makes her still ‘belong’ to Russian skating federation.

She just was having a tryout in Dalilah's camp. She wasn't released to represent the US.
She probably received some indication from Russian federation that they would be willing to release her. I can’t imagine that she would completely uproot her life and move to the USA if she didn’t believe there is a good chance that she would be released. So that would hopefully mean that they would be willing to release her to Australia...but one never knows. It might be that they were willing to release her to the USA because she was going to skate with a guy who the Russian federation believed is not that great anyway (relatively speaking) and therefore won’t be a threat to the Russian pairs; which does not mean that they will release her to skate with a guy who could be great in the future and Labazina/Windsor could be taking away medals from Russian pairs. We will have to see. Also, it was just something that one poster mentioned on the Russian forum; it hasn’t been officially confirmed and it may be that at this moment it is only a tryout (which may or may not work out).
