Alena Kostornaia

I must say I'm disappointed in a lot of the Russian ladies programs this Olympic season.
I agree. And I think it's the result of having just too many skaters and Olympic team candidates in one team.. It's kind of ridiculous. Even Zhenya and Alina situation was very tense. And it's a pity because this is probably the most important season of their careers. Everyone knows how much women category changes every 4 years...

I am not upset at all. On the contrary, I think this is a good try out. I believe Aliona and the team now should have a simple and clear strategy (maybe they already have): stabilize the 3A and polish the programs. Aliona can sell any program, we know that, and I am fine with the current ones. The key is to get that 3A back and skate clean. I am optimistic.
My thoughts entirely. No reason to be sad, standing on the podium after such a long break in an international competition is not bad at all. We'll see her perform much, much better soon, I'm 100% sure! And I like her new dress! She looked stunning with the make up harmonizing with the colours of her costume. 🥰

Very true. The thing is in my opinion evgenia has 2 great programs this season that won't be used. You make the very good point about how there's just too many Olympic caliber Russian ladies for these programs and that's probably why a lot of us don't love the programs. Aliona needs to make the best out of hers. But I so wish she had chosen take 5 or summertime for her SP. She would have nailed both of us like they were easy.

Well done to Aliona on making the podium in her international comeback after the rollercoaster that was last season! She is already so much more in tune with the SP, and has that vital spark of enjoyment when she skates it. The FP was something of a let-down, I admit, not on her part, but in terms of the choreography, as there seemed to be nothing to it but skating from jump to jump. It doesn't seem to have a story or a character for her to inhabit - she hasn't yet found a way into it, but it is really rather empty. With any luck, the FP will be tweaked and fleshed out a bit more before her first GP event.

I'm thrilled that she landed her 3A, even if it was under. Perhaps after last season what she really needs is confidence in her ability to go out there and skate clean; she is definitely much more resilient, as she was composed after a less than perfect skate, and looks happy on the podium. Considering her first two jumping passes did not go as well as she might have wished and that she got a 3Lz+REP, she was remarkably sanguine afterwards. Fingers crossed for two good clean skates for her at the Budapest Trophy, and only positive GOEs!

More FP photos.

I really quite like some of the pictures here - there is an intensity in her look at times, particularly in the spread-eagle photo, that makes me think once she has found her way into this programme she would be able to show winter in all its perilous beauty.

I do not know what i my bad english made you think I was there, but my last time in Finland was in the early 2000 :giggle:
I would have cherished another chance to see her live.
I just saw the programs on you tube, like I did today.

I agree with @Batsuchan: I don't like this FS.
We are looking at a girl wearing winter colors and the 1st notes we heard are from "summer" , then in about 10 seconds we jump with an atrocious cut to winter and in less then a minute from the start we are back at summer again.
Of course judges are probably trained to ignore this things that have little to do with skating, but it's there and I can't unhear it.
I feel there is little to sell in it, nothing to make Aliona shine, nothing to light her fire and take out the little demon in angel clothings.

we can talk about Liza as much as we like, but we all know that to make an Olympic spot Aliona must push out Anna, Sasha or Kamila.
Kamila's FS today was much better than Aliona's in any aspect.
I can't think of a single parameter in which I could consider Winter better than Bolero.
Bolero is a beat war horse bu Kamila really made it fresh because she is unconvenional in many aspect but never unsettling.

Let's see how our beloved react to this.
I'm really happy now that she scheduled 2 consecutive competition.
Eyes and hearts to Budapest.

Generous? Where? Her 3A was indeed UR but since when a step-out is scored nearly as a fall? Etc
I confess I am upset, considering how scoring was generous elsewhere. Without need because she was clearly 3d.
The judges are not off to a good start this season from this event.. It was strange scoring a lot of people got great marks.
Some did not. Why can't the ISU get judges who are consistent?

Aliona will be fine. She's pretty close with her triple axle and once she gets truly confident in that she's gonna be scoring 230 to 250 points because as others have said International judges love her.

I really hope you are right!
I long the day when judges won't have an impossible amount of tasks to perform, will have a good number of parameters written on their screens (have a good mastery of them, that's more difficult) and can pay more attention to the real skate they see with lower risk of offensive blunders.

A bit off topic with recent posts, but I checked Alena's wikipedia and it has daniil and sergei as the choreographers of her 2020-21 season exhibition programs. Is that really correct? If so, hats off to them, but I was under the impression shae-lynn bourne did those. I just want to know if I'll ever see that level of choreo for Alena again. 😉

I hope for that too. But there should not be the inconsistencies we say it's consistencies we say all the time in figure skating especially with the ladies and for example this Finlandia competition the scores as you pointed out we're all over the place. Some people got over scored by not a couple points but much more. It doesn't make the sport look good.

The pcs scores were all over the place as well.

Aliona is only a couple skates away from scoring 230 points.

Aliona said that after coming back, she’ll start running 40 min on a treadmill to build stamina, Eteri said that this is the minimum Aliona needs. I like how Aliona just says things like they are sometimes, it just sounded kinda funny how she didn’t go into more generic answer (“I’ll keep working and polishing“ etc) but was very specific exactly what she’s going to do. :)
Anyways, she sounded like she has a plan and that makes me feel more confident for her.

However, all things considered… she still didn’t fall! All these seasons and ups and downs, she’s still yet to fall.
