Alysa landed three 3a on the JGP and at two successive US Nationals. She has grown five inches since then, but her 3a is now retooled for her new body and is bigger and better. Underestimate Liu at your own peril.

Well this isn't me 'underestimating' Liu - but in her triple axel attempts this season in competition, not a single clean 1. So in practice it may look fine, but the jump has yet to be successfully done in competition to actually get positive points from it:
  • Cranberry cup, 1 attempt in the FS, downgraded
  • CS Nebelhorn, 1 attempt in the FS popped to a single axel
  • CS Lombardia, 1 attempt in the FS, under-rotated.

I don't know if I would bet anything on Skate Canada lol. For all we know, Liza will get 75 pcs
Yeah, you'll notice I only said I think Alysa would beat Alyona at CS....The only way Kami and Liza don't get the top 2 spots is if one of them makes a MAJOR error. Let's face it, Liza has the most consistent 3A in the Women's right now. It isn't the prettiest, by far, but it is darned consistent.

Agreed on that but honestly, Liu is far and away the top US female skater. Like, there's not even a competition. And they will be pushing hard for her, as seen by the debut PCS she got. I only expect her scores to rise. Russia‘s not the only one who can play that game and Aliona especially is very vulnerable right now. She had a disastrous last season and underperformed at Finlandia Trophy, so I‘m not sure how much backing she‘ll continue to get by the judges. Finlandia was handing out personal bests to everyone and their grandmothers and yet she only got like 68 PCS in the FS (not that she deserved more but they easily could have, considering how lenient they were scoring). Obviously, I want her to make the podium and I think, if in better shape than she’s been so far, she‘s still clearly the better skater, but I can‘t pretend that I‘m not seriously worried. If she loses to Alysa… I don‘t know if she can even come back from that.

God, why does Skate Canada have to be such a bloodbath every season? It‘s not good for my nerves.
I can’t imagine taking the scoring seriously in any sport where you have to have “the favor” of judges to be scored fairly, but I repeat myself.

I think permanently!

Who do you think would have won, lol?
Well it's not controversial to say that Anna would have only won 1/3 titles under international scoring. Simply because her margin of victory over Trusova in 18-19 and over Kostornaia in 19-20 was so small. If she got just a (!) call on one lutz it would be enough. Or if yout replace all their PCS scores with their best international PCS scores from those seasons. Anna comes out behind.
In 20-21 with nearly a 10 point margin over Valieva there's no question Anna would have won under any panel.

This but unironically. The judges are loving Liza right now certainly more than Aliona. Everyone says she is being overscored in PCS at Finlandia and it won't happen again and while I agree it was a generous score, she also won PCS domestically at cup finals over Kostornaia Valieva Usacheva and Khromykh. And scored very high PCS at worlds and WTT.
Would be interesting if Liu can shoot for Silver at SC. I was thinking bronze edging out Liza is the max she can hope for. Both Liza and Aliona have to falter for silver to happen. Liza is looking like she’s in a good shape, but she’s never been known for consistency.
Aliona needs to deliver better than she did at FT, and I think she’s perfectly capable of it.
Liza is absolutely known for consistency right now. She has scored 220+ in her last five international competitions (Golden Spin 2019, Rostelecom 2020, Worlds 2021, WTT 221, Finlandia 221) and even when she was making mistakes and missing jumps in the start of 19-20 season she still scored 214 212 205 209 which can absolutely beat Liu.

According to the judges she’s the best PCS skater in the world right now! Certainly the best Russian. I guess you’re saying that’s what it is and how its gonna be.

100% she can beat Liu. I’m not saying Liu for sure is beating Liza, I’m saying Liu has a chance of beating Liza, if Liza doesn’t do well and makes mistakes.

if all 3 Russians skate clean or with a couple small mistakes Alysa isn't getting on the podium. Aliona is the most vulnerable and if she can't hold it together i can see her finishing off the podium and Alysa in 3rd. it's going to take a lot for her to win over Valieva and Tuk. if Aliona is clean or mostly clean and in better shape than Finlandia she will be showered with PCS and GOE and that's going to be really hard to beat.

And I'll be the first to say this: If Liza skates her heart out and is clean I will LOVE her and all her successes. At this point in my 'pyramid', the top three are Kamila, Sasha, and Anna. I would put money on that right now. But the next in line is Liza for me, over Alyona and Maiia. I love Alyona but she's a shadow of her former self for whatever reason. And as much as I root for Maiia's success, she really just doesn't do it for me presentation-wise. I see where she's going and what she's trying to do with her choreo, but it's not working. Liza's bawdy, low-brow skating is a fun alternative.

That would be an awesome accomplishment for Alyssa if she places 3rd. It's a step up to the podium. I would guess that she and her team are focused on making progress, not winning every competition at this point. Maybe her peak will be at Nationals and next is the Olympics. I wouldn't discount Alyssa this year in any way. She's got the fire in her bones for working hard, not giving up, getting her jumps back, and being one of the best in the world.
Tuk has been able, at her "age", to polish her 3A and so far it is consistent (she's worked on PCs, too), then so can Alyssa and if I were a betting person would say that Alyssa has not given up on quads. One step at a time!

I plan to watch the practices today on Peacock. I'll post what I see, though it's more fun reading posts from people who are actually there. I'm still annoyed that I canceled my plans to be there this week. I just was overly cautious wrt Covid/Delta.
oh shoot peacock is streaming them?? then that's where i'll be! thanks for the heads up.

It starts at 12 noon today. Ladies are around 3:30. I'll just have it on in the background all day and watch when a skater I'm interested in is on.
