Early Predictions

I don't see Kevin Reynolds upstaging Shawn Sawyer for the time being. It is true that Kevin has two different types of quads, but his PCS are always a way behind his TES. He has to be a bit more complete package to be able to move up in the nationals.

Hmmm, Lacoste. What's up with the Canadian ladies, who burst out to the national scene in one year and then fizzle out the next year? Amanda Billings, Lacoste and maybe Samson is heading that direction. She might stage a comeback at the national scene at least, just like Cynthia Phaneuf did last year. Then, the question will be whether she will be good enough to go international.

I could see Kevin beating Shawn unless Shawn starts landing the jumps. Even with Kevin's really bad PCS marks he has been outscoring Shawn thus far. As well Kevin is just 17 so there is time to work on that presentation.

Shawn Sawyer - Cup of China -170.94 and struggling at NHK thus far
Kevin Reynolds - Cup of Russia - 186.69

Shawn really struggles with the jumps. Not only does he have no quad or triple axel to speak of but even his triple lutz is iffy. At age 22, the likelihood of Shawn fixing those jumps is looking less and less.

I love Shawn's skating but I am afraid he just might get left behind.

I read in another thread that he will not be competing....................the only reason he would show up at Nationals is to provide singing entertainment during the ice resurfacing breaks..........................

Fedor is back and looking good - at least in practice..........His triple lutz is gorgeous and his circular footwork really difficult. We'll see how he makes out at Challenge - didn't put forth a difficult program at sectionals. At Challenge he will have to pull out those triples. He looks more mature and centred in practice now after a couple of years off modelling and racing cars.

Great news about Fedor. I wonder how serious he is about skating though. And why did he come back?

Does anyone know who Fedor is dating now?

I still think he would have been a lovely pairs skater....................:biggrin:

Thanks for clarifying Cynthia prediction. I wish she could get back to her old form too..................

I read somewhere that Fedor had started a partenership with Jenny Kirk quite a few years back. It obviously didn't last, but did they ever actually make it to a competition?

I agree they started skating together but I do not know if they ever competed. My guess would be no, they did not.

He finished first in the Senior Challenge so it looks like he is on top of his game!

Fedor is skating amazing as ever,
I recall seeing him before he quit and he's improved ten-fold.

But back to the results,
Any changes in the predictions now that westerns/easterns have completed in the junior fields?

Yes, my predictions would change in the men's event.

With Fedor skating the way he did, I'd place him on the podium with Chan and Buttle.......................Sandu is not going to attend unless it is to sing during the ice resurfaces

Fedor is back????!!!! YUMMMM!!! :p

Let's hope so! If she does just the short, as she did last year at Canadians - she and Bryce will not be eligible to compete in pairs...........The new 'Jessica' rule was made this season after Jessica performed only her short in Halifax and then pulled from the long but did both pairs programs. As a result, a senior women who made it through qualifying and then placed 25th in the short----(they only took 24 to the long program) -- was denied the right to skate her long program after Jessica withdrew.

Let's also hope if she does plan to withdraw from singles at Canadians -- that she does it before the cut-off so that the senior women who placed 16th at Senior Challenge gets the oppportunity to compete in Vancouver....(only 18 senior women are competing at Canadians - 15 from Senior Challenge including Jessica and Cynthnia, plus Lesley Hawker, Joannie Rochette and Mira Leung who did not compete but are byed as medalists).

Wow, I didn't hear about that new rule... I think Jessica does plan to do both programs, though - last year was because of a lack of preparation and, considering her operations and injuries, it kind of made sense. I do feel bad for the lady who lost out on a place, though... I'm not quite sure which side I'm on for this, but I'd love to *see Jessica do all 4 programs, well 5 with the gala in pairs!! (*see because I doubt her long program will be broadcast... her short has been in the last 2 years)

Starting orders are up on the SC website under results for nationals. I like the fact that two new senior teams made it into the final flight in dance. Those two have had fairly strong seasons, and may stir things up this year at nationals.

Those 2 teams got byes to nationals due to making the JGPF.

There is nothing random about the CD/SP start orders. The start order was determined this way: ( In order from 1st to last). Note byed skaters are those with a GP assignment, medalled at the last nationals or made it to the JGPF.

1. Non-byed skaters who made through challenge in reverse order of finish at challenge.

2. Random draw of byed skaters who did not compete at last senior nationals.
Note Crone/Poirier and Lenko/Islam would be in this category.

3. Byed skaters who competed at last year's senior nationals in reverse order of finish at the nationals.
