2021 Skate America: Men's Short Program

No, if Kevin is injured, or even if something is bothering him mentally that badly, he should withdraw. What he put out there today was dangerous. If he's not already injured - which he is - he will be if he continues to skate like that.

They should both withdraw. We should only have a 9 man FS tomorrow. We won't. And unfortunately, it sounds like both feds have a hand in that.
It's Kevin's and his coach's decision to make.

Well, well, well. Let me take a moment to bask in smugness because I cautioned on another thread to take a breath before annointing medals or team selections before the GP season even started. Ah, that felt good.

Overall, I thought placements were right, and scores were reasonable.

Ok, down to business. Nathan will be fine. I can't help but wonder if he has any regrets about skipping all the early season events... but it really doesn't matter.

Vincent did well, I'm very happy, but I do want to take a gander at the protocols.

Shoma was a nice surprise. I'm proud of him. He would be leading I think, except for that botched jump.

Setting aside problems with the elements, I like Nam's program better than I have anything he's skated in years.

Is that Brezina in the final group tomorrow? Why, yes, I think it is! Go cactus!

The French were just terrible, both of them. The fed should have let Kevin withdraw - that couldn't possibly have done him any good at all.

Nice sensible post. 👏

You had no problem saying Shun should withdraw. Why is Kevin any different?
Check your reading comprehension? I said "Shun should consider withdrawing," because he's seriously injured, and he could further injure his shoulder by competing the free skate. He and his coach have to decide whether it's worth it. I'm not the enforcer, nor the arbiter, nor the manager for any of these skaters. I only voice my opinions based on my perceptions.

Kevin is surely beat up after those falls, and he surely has a number of aches and pains. As to whether or not he had an injury coming into this event, I haven't heard. The decision is up to him and his coach, just as it is for Shun, but with Shun there's more to consider regarding his injured shoulder.

Kévin had a chronic injury coming into this event. He was not completely healed at the Masters de patinage and he said that is why he came in third in that comp. It appears as though the French Fed is encouraging him to skate and and the French Fed should be ashamed of themselves.

for Kevin and for Shun, this is not “lol disaster skate”. (ETA: although remarkably Shun did not have that bad a skate.)This is dangerous and they should withdraw.

Hi, friend,

I watched this on the TV, NBCSN coverage or something like that. Terry Gannon and Johnny Weir.

Anyhow, according to Weir, he spoke to Kevin's coach and Kevin's groin injury had not healed, and he hadn't really returned to good training condition, and he wanted to withdraw. The French federation pressed Kevin to compete to get some competition mileage. The coach was worried that a subpar performance could result in a bad outcome because her skater is an emotional athlete. She agreed that Kevin should withdraw.

For all of Johnny's sometimes over-the-top commentary and presentation, I don't think he'd make up that reporting or exaggerate the conversation he had.

Thank you my friend. I watch on Peacock, so I get no commentary, but I would trust Johnny on this as well.

I was basing my comments on an article in French I read right after the Masters de Patinage, where Kevin said that his third-place performance there was due to the groin injury. I did not know that it had not yet healed until I saw him here. It is simply not fair to Kevin to have him compete in this condition.

I am so bummed about Nathan. :( His skate seemed to catch on a rut on the combo. He seemed off throughout really, except on his 3A. I wish he'd done some warm up competitions to get some mileage on his SP - and perhaps some feedback. I enjoyed his Nemesis redux on the back half of his program, but the first half just never really took off for me. Honestly, I hope that he brings back Carnival. I'm just not feeling this SP and it's the Olympic season. I do hope Nathan nails his FS! 🙏

Totally agree.

Aside from the risk of prolonging or worsening the injury, Kevin doesn't seem to me to be the type who can easily bounce back from a performance like this one... according to Weir, the coach was worried about this. Those weren't just minor falls, they looked painful, like his landing leg was just not capable of handling the force of the jumps. As you wrote in another post, this is endangering the athlete needlessly.

I don't understand - the skater wanted to withdraw, the coach wanted to withdraw... but the Fed pressured otherwise? Who EXACTLY countermanded the team and applied this pressure, and what is to be done with him or her?

I've been thinking.. it seems that his 3A were not that polished during his practice, so it could also be that he put all his attention to that jump during the SP. And was either too confident on the first quad and/or a bit distracted on the combo. Either way, the boy will be fine. Taking pressure from "being #1" off-his shoulders does wonders for him in the long run.

What a disaster darling!! Lol. .. Nathan will be fine. He is a very level headed guy. I have no concerns at this point in the season. Congratulations to Vincent . Wishing them all better FS. Makes for a more interesting competition.
This cheered me up! Thanks, I needed that!

I'm hoping for a great FS from Nathan! 🙏

Vincent did a great job! He can win with the healthy lead that he has, going into the FS!

KEVIN. IS. INJURED.

Not only was this obvious, it was a known fact before this event.

There isn't "more to consider" for Shun. It's the same consideration. Worse, for Kevin, in a way, because his injury is in his lower half and will always be impacted by skating, whereas Shun has the possibility of getting away with not injuring himself further.

They should both withdraw.

I would suggest that 2006 Olympics FD was comparable splatwise—especially when you consider that ice dancers don’t jump :)
Interesting, I wasn't watching skating at that time but in recent years I've watched a bit of the Original Dance and THAT was a real splatfest with poor Marie-France Dubreuil's nasty fall causing her and Patrice Lauzon to withdraw from the FD and Barbara Fusar-Poli and Maurizio Margaglio's fall taking them out of contention, leading to THAT glare from Barbara 😆

Congrats to Zhou and Ma on great SPs!

Clearly a bad SP for Chen but he should bounce back in the FS. But shaking my head at the judges who were giving him 9, 9.25 even 9.5 especially for PE/IN when he made what I consider two jarring errors. I get high PCS in the other categories but even those should have been tempered. Gutted for Aymoz too and hope he’s okay.
