2021 Skate Canada: Men's Free Skate

An easy win for Nathan but not quite perfect. Is it just the same programme as last year but with poorer music choices? A great wY to bounce back from his first defeat in over 3 years.

The PCS are ridiculous, that does not side serve 92+.
He's gotten much more for worse skates. So have many other men... it's fine..

He could have not even done the past three jumping passes and still won. I was surprised he went for that final quad....he knew he didn't need it.

Notes from the rink—
We think Roman’s blood cursed the ice—they actually had to stop the comp and clean it up before they could resume
Keegan is scary to watch—loud gasps for each scary looking fall
Our friend El Henry will be delighted to hear that the audience cheered and clapped for Jason’s non jump elements, the Ina Bauer etc. but—when has Jason ever messed up a spin like that? Audible gasps from the audience

They are setting up the medal stand now—all the steps are in the shape of the maple leaf, cute!

Quick thoughts after the men from the arena:
It was a pity that only the final three programs felt really watchable from a performance standpoint - everyone else felt like they were just skating between jumps and not even really landing the jumps at that
Keegan - we really need concussion protocols but the man just loves the crowd and is loved by us in return. It’s probably the only time I’ve ever felt grateful that I recorded a ‘disaster program’ (tech speaking). The love in the air was just something else!
Brown - the grace and emotion in the program were real and I feel like he’s probably the only skater in the field now who can do justice to the schindler music. A pity on the jumps but still eminently lovely to watch nevertheless!
Chen - he’ll be thinking about the ogg so I’m also thinking about the program as a potential ogg program. I feel like it has technical excellence and is easily deserving just based on that, but I also wish there’s something grander beyond that, something that means I can convert non skater fan friends to watch this sport after sharing the ogg program with them. If he can skate this like p/c skated their moonlight program…

Just amazing from Jason. Even not at its best, still a moving performance. Tracey seems very happy. Does he need a quad? Skate clean and hover up all +ive GOE’s might be a better strategy.

I like Kolyada but this puts his programme in the shade.

In the lead overall. I wasn’t expecting that and neither was he. He deserves 90+ in PCS.
I really like the adjustments in this program. I think it is going to be stunning when he gets as comfortable with it as he is Sinnerman. It's already pretty gorgeous.

I'm amused by the polar opposite scores for Zhenya and Jason - Zhenya's 13 points ahead on TES and Jason's 11 points up on PCS - and that they're probably the two programs I enjoyed the most.

Really proud of how Nathan handled this week, coming off Skate America and then unexpectedly not being able to have his coach in the KnC. I'm not totally sold on the FS yet, I think I want more of a transition from the program to the choreo sequence (or is it the step sequence?) at the end.

Jason is pleasantly shocked at his placement.

But deservedly so. Even if dear god in heaven he missed a spin.

Just does it all in terms of skating so so so so well.
I knew I shouldn't have started typing that glowing post before he finished skating. I jinxed him. Please forgive me.

Me thinks he was just aiming to lock up GPF spot (would look really bad to not make it) so went safe at the beginning.

Then once it was clearly locked up took a few more risks. Not loving the programs this year, though his main competitor is Hanyu who is king of uninspired recycled programs, so I am not sure it matters. Not sure any of the mens programs have me interested this year.

I want Nathan to go back to Caravan. At least that is an interesting contrast with his long.

Either way.... easy win.

Not really feeling Jason's Schindler's List. IDK.... just get nothing from it. Pale imitation of Joshua Farris's from years back.

For Keegan, Keiji and Roman to be 10, 11, and 12 in the Free Skate, and still be 3, 4, and 5 in PCS shows how strong they are in PCS.
Well, they were competing against some less than perfectly artistic skaters here but the judges clearly like them all because they have such incredible glide across the ice. I think everyone appreciates Keegan and Roman's SS, but sometimes Keiji's incredible basics and performance abilities are ignored because he is so inconsistent. But, truly he is wonderful.

Well that was a mess...

But happy for Nathan cause was so much better than last week and it couldn't have been easy to coming back from that! Locked up his GPF spot. I just wish I could get behind the programs. I think the FS has potential to grow on me but Lacrimosa is just so depressing... and that techno mix just comes out of nowhere, I don't think it's even a well choreographed sequence in the same way that his Rocketman one was.
