2021-22 Russian Women's Figure Skating

One thing, Alina is still Russia’s most decorated women’s single skater, and it might stay that way for a while.

Russia has only 2 individual OGM’s in women’s, and while they will probably get another one this year, what are the chances that someone wins not only the Olympics, but, GPF, and Worlds in this insanely stacked field?

Kamila may be not to everyone's taste. I have come to the conclusion that's it is futile to argue about tastes. Some people adore Wakaba's skating - I dislike it. So what? The thing is that when talking about figure skating as sport Kamila is the GOAT. 265 points with a stepout - come on, people. Quads are not permitted in the SP. Adding a 4T-3T and 4S to her SP, what would her score be, 280? Convert it to men's pcs - we are talking about 305-310. Only 2 men in history could score higher. So, with all due respect to Alina whom I find amazing, Kamila is a new generation on a very different level. Unless something bad happens, she will easily get Alina's "Grand Slam" and she may not even need 2 years for that. Hence, I don't agree with "stay that way for a while".

After seeing Alena this weekend, I'm not too sure she could beat Anna right now. Then again, the last time we saw Anna she made a lot of errors as well. With both of them not where they used to be technically, we'd have to look at the components--and that's where the story is told.

Anna has Alena beat on components in the eyes of the judges. Anna is the reigning national and world champ--that comes with a level of respect when it comes to other skaters. It's that whole scoring hierarchy thing. Unfortunately for Alena, she's nowhere near the top. In 2019-2020 she was in the top 2; now she's like 5th or lower. Kamila, Anna, Liza, Sasha and possibly even Daria are ahead of her...yes, even in components.

I'm more confident in Anna beating Alena than I am in Alena beating Anna. I'm sorry but Alena's programs are not good--they need to rework the SP (get rid of the sad/quiet/slow version of "New York, New York" and just go for the bigger version for the whole program) and I'm not sure what they can do to make the FS better--it's just not an Olympic program. With Alena already struggling to get back where she needs to be, it's going to be an uphill battle for her to get the top 3. If she can clean up some of the errors she had there's a shot for her to medal at her next event. She really needs two clean 3As as well as one for the SP--it's the only way for her to put herself back in contention. It's going to be a tall order considering she's not even 100% on regular triples right now (she had URs and qs at SC).

Anna has a little more wiggle room because she's starting the season near the top (based on the end of last season) which means there's less ground for her to cover. She'll get the benefit of the doubt at least for a little bit before the judges start dropping her--Alena doesn't have that luxury. Overall it's sad to see where Triple A is as a whole right now. Everyone thought Anna, Alena and Sasha would be battling for gold in Beijing...at this point it's looking like maybe only one of them will make it on the team...

Unlike 2019, now I think Alena has to outjump Anna to come out ahead. That probably means Alena landing full-rotated 3As and Anna not landing the quads. Alena must make the most of her next GP event with no Sasha, no Liza, no Kamila, and no Maia going against her.

Would love to see an Alina comeback. She is still the most successful Russian.she won everything and would show the youngster their place. She deserved her high pcs

I think it's unlikely for Aliona to beat Anna, mainly because I think Anna will go for the quad even if it's unstable so that she can do three 3-3 combos. And of course we'll have to see if they continue with the trend of strict judging.

The traits of GOAT are in the eye of the beholder. I meant that she would outscore any skater of the present and past even Trusova with 5 quads. Of course, if we focus on titles no one will beat Sonia Henie, ever.

Posts like these only make me laugh because I‘ve read incredibly similar ones for the past years. First Yulia was the GOAT, then Evgenia, then Alina, then the 3A were the "historic trio" with a "historic rivalry", now it‘s Kamila. Until in about two years, when it will be Akatieva or Zhilina or another Chosen One of the season. "Greatest of All Time" begins to mean a whole lot less when it‘s such an interchangeable title.

Well most girls recline at 18/19 or at least the next generation is beating them, so even if I hope I am wrong but akatieva and mabye also zhilina w1ere born in the wrong year. They will be both what 18 to 19 ? At the next Olympics in 2026. If the younger generation after them is better than we probably will have the same happen as this time and with alina and zhenya, as in the you her ones beating the older ones. N

I agree with you. Things have developed in a completely unexpected way. Does anybody know how Anna's post-Covid health is? Have heard (don't know if it's true) that she still has some difficulties to breathe freely when she pushes hard in her skating?

LOL One quad and Sonia's techs scores are blown out of the water and across the Atlantic ocean. But focussing on the Russian lady is entirely possible maybe not likely that the current three medalists don't make the team.

WIth Sasha's injury, Liza being seen almost as almost old and weary and Anna a huge question mark none of them possibly end up on the team. I mean there is Kamila, Aliona, Maia who could make up the team.

Liza is one of the most energetic performers out there today. There's a lot of fair criticism you can make about her and the scores she's been getting lately, but lack of energy isn't one of them IMO.

This is why I always find it eyeroll worthy when I hear Kamila "Would Score 300+ in Men's" or whatever, as if men and women's scoring is exactly the same. A 15-17 year old man would not be getting 93.43 PCS in his Senior Grand Prix debut with a clean skate let alone with a mistake, even if he did 3 Quads. I mean look at Nathan Chen at the same competition: the 3-time World Champ (and OG fave) scored 92.78 in PCS and barely scraped 200 in the FS with 4 Quads!

Not trying to attack anyone here btw it's just I see this rhetoric all over the place when it doesn't work that way. This isn't because Kamila isn't extremely talented or anything, it just takes more time for Men's PCS to rise and the judges don't go crazy when rewarding GOE to a decent 4S.

Unfortunately for Aliona that is a best case scenario for her. I'm not expecting anything more than a silver, she hasn't even attempted 3*3As yet this season so I can't expect her to be fully clean on them in France. I hope she goes for all 3 this time, a silver is pretty guaranteed with a decent skate so might as well go in guns blazing. More than anything it's the PCS side that really needs to be worked on, she was always a PCS skater so seeing her not get 70+ in the FP is so disappointing, but definitely fixable.
