Yes, this "success" syndrome is very common. I was discussing it with a psychologist the other day. It means that when you first are successful and get praised for talents, you get scared. You are starting to doubt yourself if you can do it again. And instead of hard work, you "sabotage" yourself by not doing it. Because, then when you fail you can always say that you didn't do the work, but the talent is still there. It's easier to accept that instead of the scary scenario of working hard and maybe fail anyway.
That's why gifted people are often labelled as "lazy". But it has nothing to do with laziness.
