I think Kimmie may be dealing with the burden of high expectations. She knows that the USFSA wants her to medal at the GP final and she really wanted to skate her best and that made her more nervous than usual.

It's worse than that. I remember at the last GP event, she said in an interview that she was happy to have landed the 3Z in the SP (she messed up the combination). That was a pretty strange remark! At one time, the lutz and flip were pretty secure and consistent jumps for her, but she was unable to land either one in the FS. I find that very, very alarming.

One word. PUBERTY.
She has noticeably "filled out" since last season, and even when she barely lands her triples they are eeked out and not secure at all. I'm still hoping for her to make a comeback like Michelle did a decade ago, though.

Kimmie just turned 18 in October. Many girls, particularly the thinner ones, don't 'bloom' until their late teens.

I haven't yet seen the event on TV and after learning about Kimmie's disaster I don't know if I want to watch. Kimmie's such a cheerful sweetheart and I think it would break my heart to see her cry or even just not smile.

Can anyone here tell me ahead of time if Kimmie cried or frowned , or did she manage those cute smiles that she is known for, good skate or bad?

She didn't cry, she gave a sort of ironic smile, but you could tell she was upset. I felt very bad for her. It's a little over 5 weeks to Nationals, and she's not in a good place. I just don't know how she is going to turn this around.

I also feel sorry for her. I think her SP was robbed, the scores should have been much higher. It's a near clean program, and she attacked it with power and speed.

I think the long program probably reflects her current training standards. Somebody mentioned on this board not long time ago Kimmie simply was unable to land her jumps during practice. If she can't land jumps consistently in practice, no matter how tough she is mentally, she will bomb in competitions.

I assume puberty is taking a toll....

it's time for kimmie to change coach. She's been with that coach for a long time now.. She needs a change.

Unless Kimmie is highly abnormal, she went through puberty years ago--like when she was 12 or 13. Teenagers do tend to fill out as they get into their upper teens but it has nothing to do with puberty.

Did she gain a lot? She still looks very skinny to me. I honestly cannot tell the difference from the last season in her body size. Although her SP costume might have made her look a bit bigger than she actually is, she looked as skinny as the last season in her LP costume.

In any case, I wish her best of luck in US nationals.:)

Kimmie's legs gotten pretty good size this season. I think her upper body is very thin.

You can't use normal standards to gauge female skaters' 'weight'... An extra five pounds can throw your jumps completely off track...

BTW, if Kimmie has some problems, Emily is even worse. I didn't pay much attention to her skating this season, but vaguely remember her jumps were not there...

Did Emily land 3lutz? 3flip? 3loop? I knew she repeated two simple triples - Sal in long program...

Emily was landing 3F and 3Z, but underrotating them. At least Kimmie rotated the 3F and 3Z and got some points for them. Underrotating, you get the value of a double with a deduction, and the end result is usually less than a point. At least Kimmie netted 4.78 points for the 3 jumps she fell on.

Kimmie is still very thin, but she looks taller to me than she did last season. Sometimes height can seriously mess up your jumps because your center of gravity has shifted. And if her legs got longer, that definitely could cause jump problems.

I don't see much that has 'filled out' to any degree.

Is she still growing in height at age 18?

I am so worried about the US obtaining 3 spots for the next worlds. We have so many talented skaters(Caroline, Mirai and Flatt) eligible next worlds and that would suck if we only qualify for 2 spots. We need both Ashley and Kimmie placing in the top 7. I can't think of any other skaters that is capable of doing that but these two right now. Kimmie just needs to focus on doing two clean programs and NO 3/3!! Why even bother when you know you are going to get downgrade it and loose more points.

Kimmie is not even landing the first triple in the 3/3, let alone the second. She fell on both 3Z attempts and on the 3F attempt in her FS.

I am worried, too. It's just over 5 weeks until the Nationals Ladies SP, and Kimmie is nowhere near ready. Ashley looks very good, judging from her GP events, but Kimmie is in trouble with her jumps, and as a full-time college student, Emily doesn't have the time to resolve her own very serious problems with the 3Z and 3F. BeBe and Alissa are too erratic to pin US hopes on.

Im gonna have a little faith in Kimmie, anyone can have a bad night, certainly she did yesterday, but... I bet she'll recover from this. She's my reason to watch figure skating so... Im really convinced at Nationals we wont see "last night" anymore.
