Alysa Liu withdraws from Nationals, due to Covid

Is there any smaller competition before 4C where she can get a minimum tech score? (assuming Gracie doesn't totally bomb tonight)
Apparently there is Bavarian Open pretty soon but I don´t know if it s a real option and if it´s time enough. It also seems risky travel to Europe now, that´s a lot of hours in airplane.

ISU should have a new round with video judging like they did before Worlds last season. I´m just afraid it´s so late to organize. Not sure if they will do it either because mostly the skaters who need the minimum have them.

I think the deadlines have all passed for entries into said smaller competitions

I think somehow the USFS reserves spots at Bavarian in case they need them.

It is kinda their last chance one. They used it for Tyler Pierce to get her Junior Worlds minimum a few years back. I think they may have sent Vincent as well to get a needed TES once too.

This is not the first time they have needed to use that competition. And the organizers likely know it.

This is just sad. I guess she hasn't been having symptoms if it took this long to discover she had Covid. When was tested? She skated the SP didn't she? How did this come to light?
My understanding is that Alysa had two negative tests before leaving for Nashville. Daily tests weren't being conducted in the bubble, however I think they were testing everyone going into the rink today. It's possible that the positive was recorded there. It's also possible Alysa had symptoms and then got tested. If there were any symptoms, they sound like they are mild. I am very glad to hear Alysa is feeling OK mentally and physically.
I'm thinking more about the strict rules China has regarding this situation. They may not let her go if she can't show a negative test asap.
We have a month until the Olympics, more than enough time to get a negative test. I'm guessing you need to test negative up to two weeks before entering China, which in this situation would be entirely possible.

Is her BOW strong enough to get selected?
Yes, and considering Amber's rough SP, there appear to be no other challengers for the third spot. (and before those of you say Lindsay, she can skate very well but ultimately she doesn't have the same international standing as Alysa nor the overall body of work, and Alysa did have a very solid SP despite having COVID) If Bradie were here, the story would be wholly different, but she's not.

I don´t want to sound negative, but I have read that you can test positive long after you are done with Covid and that the PCR test are very sensitive in that case. And that China is very strict and only will let athletes in who has a negative PCR. I guess that is what we fear. Obviously she will be done with covid before Olympics, but she might not have a negative test.

I hope this will not be the case for Alysa. But USFS needs a back up plan for this scenario.

Thank you. I feel like Gracie is unlikely to get chosen for the Olympics but we need to squash this rumor that there is “nowhere she can get the minimums” if she is.

Correct, it’s incredibly variable. An athlete recalled testing positive in November from leftover shedding from her earlier August infection. Some people test negative with a PCR test in 14 days, others it can take up to 90 days. Symptomatic vs. asymptomatic aside.

China is requiring two negative PCR tests before entering, a measure that could be overly cautious, but makes sense given the contagious nature of this variant. Ultimately, none of this matters. I hope Alysa doesn’t contract symptoms and stays in good spirits. She should be off the ice for at least 2 weeks, and I hope USFS doesn’t push her too hard. Recovery takes time.

Has the Committee made a decision on whether or not they'll give her a spot on the team? After seeing what happened in pairs, I doubt Alexa and Brandon will get a spot on the team since the pairs that competed did so well.

This is a nightmare. Poor Alysa! I'm glad that she said that she's feeling good. Prayers for her full recovery! 🙏

I'm not going to enjoy the ladies event as much without her - and I hope she can stay in top form, and petition onto the Olympic team - along with Alexa and Brandon! I'm terrified for everyone at this event! Now I almost wish that they would have canceled the competition and just gone by everyone's body of work!
