Ilia is basically Morisi and Semenenko but less mature looking. And Jason has beaten them both.

To be fair, Vincent didn't get any UR calls on his quads too, and i'm sure he had two. With the international panel both of them would get calls and Vincent at least one more, so...

Vincent skated a very rough program and still beat Jason at close to his best. If Vincent had skated well it wouldn't have even been close. I love Jason and he is my favorite man to watch, but I think the lure of sending a team of three men who all have 4 or 5 quads in the free to the Olympics will be too much for the selection committee to resist.

I mean earlier this season Yaro had to withdraw because his boots broke. It was a huge bummer
And Jun is Junhwan Cha, I never know where to put the 'h' in his first name...but yeah apparently he has known boot issues. I think at one point he needed to get a new pair every 3 months or something crazy like that.

The PCS was ridiculous here.
Zhou's 9.25 for PE was way too high, and his SS shouldn't have been higher than 8.75 because he did not demonstrate good skating skills/attack/speed in this FS.
Brown's was way too high for an error and no successful quad (and just one attempt) as beautiful as the rest of the program was. He definitely wouldn't get 9.75's internationally and the rules prohibit him from getting 10's with a fall. Same with Chen getting 9.75s with 2 falls, which the rules prohibit. But Chen's 91 PCS was more realistic.

i feel so bad for jason. With the group selection it sounds like Ilia is trending higher so he'll go over Jason (and why would they skip the 2nd place by over 20 points for 4th?). Vincent/Jason was only .3 point difference. Team was notified but we wont find out til 645 EST.

His score at JGPF would not count. They don’t count junior events in the selection criteria for the Olympics.

Yes, he did based on the current preference of the clean, balanced skates over the skates that veer one way or another. Malinin hit exactly what they want. Jumps, including the hardest, executed cleanly, decent spins and keeping choreography going. He didn’t fall once in 2 programs. He did not screw up a single element. It’s objectively better than everyone in this competition.

On the NBC wrapup, both Tara and Johnny picked Nathan, Vincent, Ilia for the Olympics.
I include this NOT because I think their opinions are deciding factors, but because I wonder how much of what they broadcast is telegraphing the USFSA message.... as in, they're gathering intel behind the scenes about various scenarios and repackage that as commentary.

Vincent got some help from the tech panel, who ignored a couple of UR's that were obvious to my naked eye. Had these been properly called, he would be behind Jason.
I think they should still select Jason. The third spot is kind of irrelevant because whether it's Jason or Ilia, the third US man is not going to be on the podium--not with Hanyu and Yuma as competition. Ilia's jumps look like ladies' quads and he is not there at all yet on the second mark. He is also untested at such a high level. Send Ilia to Jr. Worlds. He is the future. Jason is the present.

Agreed. Vincent had a poor FS. It might compromise him doing the team event, although he would still beat Messing and man from country #5 in the FS, and being a medal hopeful they might give him the chance for some pre-individual mileage... so he might do the FS after all. It's risky to put him in the SP but the guy's been solid in every SP this season, which isn't chump change either.

Jason got help from the tech panel too. That 3F+3T was not worthy of 5's given the scratchy landing of the 3T, and if Zhou's jumps deserved UR calls, Jason's 4S DEFINITELY deserved one.
I agree though that the tech panel was super lenient on Zhou, but Brown got his carrots too (particularly in the PCS department, IMO).
The TES, alone, doesn't put Malinin over Nathan, nevernind that Malinin needs so much more work in his skating skills. Pls stop joking.
