I'm doing calculations and trying to predict the future lol... If the positions stay like this in the SP: 1.Kami 2. Kaori 3. Mariah/Karen, Russia and USA will be tied, but doing the math I think USA can take the team event 😭 So sad for Kami and Anna they deserve that medal of gold.
Can Russia even get to the free skate for the ladies with a chance at the team gold?

I would not count on Karen or Mariah to bomb at all but it's possible Karen could finish fourth in the SP. Is would that hurt the American chances? Especially if Chen doesn't have a triple triple and others do and hit them.

What's with no Russian judge in the team event but you have an American judge Canadian judge an Israeli judge? Is was it fair scoring today or should the US and Russia be tied instead of Russia down 2?

I believe the judges were chosen through random drawing. I also think this was some of the fairest scoring overall we've seen in a while, and I'm saying this as someone who wants Kamila and Anna (still have my fingers crossed for them to split women and not leave the world champion out of the team event) to have a team gold

I am nervous 😰😱😬

So if KV gets 10 points and Karen 7 in the SP
and Anna 10 points and Bell 7in the free isn't that plus 6 points for Russia against the US?

The question is when Anna does her free skate will Russia even be within two or three points of the United States for it make a difference? Maybe the world champion dance team from Russia will make up for their lost point to the USA Today in the free skate. They will need to.

Don't be too nervous I'm not sure the team event will be in the Olympics long term. It should be after the individual competitions it almost takes something away from looking forward to the individual competition having the team event to start off with.

For Kamila and Anna to have a team gold the other skaters from Russia are going to have to stay within striking dstance of the United States because we know the Russians will beat the american ladies I would think by at least three points in the short program and two or three points in the free skate. It may have to be more than three points in the SP and Russia will have to hope for KV kaori and anastasiia to place ahead of Karen in the SP to make it a 4-point difference.

Let's not forget Russian men aren't exactly the beacon of consistency, but then again Vincent isn't exactly that either so maybe that's a wash.

Russia are still the runaway favourites for team gold. Things just went surprisingly well for team USA in the first three showings but if everything goes well, it's still entirely possible that Russia will get 1st/1st/1st/3rd in the FS which would mean there's nothing USA can do.

What? How are they going to get all these first-place finishes? there might be second places or third places which would make for a very tight competition. I would think the Russian ladies would win the short program and the free skate comfortably with the Americans no closer than 3rd in each of those skates. But Russian pairs has to be the American couple in the free skate and the Russian dance team which let them down today needs to finish ahead of the Americans in the free skate because Nathan is probably going to finish a few points ahead of Mark.

It's a total crapshoot at this point. My feeling is Russia needs to get the competition to within two points for Anna's free skate because I would think she would be Bell by two points.

If Karen/Mariah finish fourth, that's a hope for Russia for sure.
Right now any point is valuable 😰

Gubanova please have the skate of your life and go for that third position.
P.S. I am also afraid that Kami will fail the 3A, for this event I think I should play it safe, with a 2A it would be enough to win the SP 😬

I don't think it matters whether it's Anna or Kamila in the final skate or even SP.

All things being normal, either one will come first.

It's all the other stuff that you guys will need to calculate!!!!

That depends - who is doing the SP for Japan will they be doing a triple axel and how stable is the jump? If so, then it will be tough for Shcherbakova or Trusova to place ahead of them

Putting Anna in would be a problem in the SP, her average score this season is 73.37, Kaori’s is 74.83. Loosing any points is not helpful.

If Shcherbakova is clean I think WC beats Kaori, but I think its been confirmed its Valieva in the SP

Mishina/Galliamov beat Sui/Han to be reigning world champions and are incredibly consistent. It's possible for them to get 1st. Even if they're swapped out for Boikova/Kozlovski or Tarasova/Morozov, both teams have generally scored more than K/F. Remember, K/F did much better than expected in the SP which they may or may not be able to repeat.

Women's of course is Russia's to lose and potentially where the biggest gains in points will be as the American woman can be as low as 5th (assuming a fall and the Russian, Japanese, Gubanova and Schizas ahead of her). Most likely she will be 3rd with an okay/good skate.

Likewise, S/K are still expected to win in the FD barring big mistakes. Otherwise, they may concede 1 point if there's mistakes again.

Kondratiuk is skating well and getting scored generously so 3rd is within reach for him and Nathan is unlikely to be doing the FS. The US men can cancel out the ladies differential here but that's assuming Vincent places 2 places ahead of Mark and that Karen doesn't bomb. Vincent isn't known to be the most consistent so there could be a problem there as well. Regardless, this would leave K/F to fend for themselves as there's, at most, 1 point leeway for them from ice dance (unless Mark bombs AND Vincent does amazingly).

Now that the above is talking about the free skate section only, assuming that both countries tie at the end of the SP section. If Karen bombs the SP then Russia will have a lead that will be difficult for USA to make up. Russia can climb back from behind but USA need to keep their lead or tie.

It is offtopic, but here how things look for team event now (and it seems like lots of people here overreact to scores and placing after day 1) -

USA - 28, ROC - 26 - this is now
USA - 36, ROC - 36 - this is after women SP where USA take 3rd, and ROC 1st (here USA can underperform)
USA - 46, ROC - 44 - this is after men FP where USA take 1st, and ROC 3rd (here both USA (if they change Nathan) and ROC can underperform)
USA - 54, ROC - 53 - this is after pairs FP where USA take 3rd, and ROC take 2nd (i assuming China will not change their team here) (here USA can underperform, also here ROC have good chance to overperform)
USA - 63, ROC - 63 - this is after dance FP where USA take 2nd, and ROC take 1st
USA - 71, ROC - 73 - this is after women FP where USA take 3rd, and ROC take 1st

All in all, ROC still heavy favorite for gold, and returning to topic - ROC can easily change women for FP.

Wow you have it down to a science. But I guess that's what this team competition needs with all the what if and very and various possibilities.

It's time for Russian dance and Russian pairs to separate themselves from the American teams. If they don't they may very well end up in 2nd place.

Thank you.

Everybody over react. It's just a part of life and especially as a sports fan.

Thank you for the breakdown you have a very close competition that can go either way even though you think the Russians are still the favorites.

It's still mind bloggling that the Russians got to the Zhenya team free skate 4 years ago with no chance for the team gold. If the Russians don't skate a little bit sharper that is possible to happen again. I do not want to see Anna skating that freestype to close out the team event with no chance after team gold.

They may also need Chen to finish in 4th place in the short program. They may need that 3 point win.
