First, Zhou only tested positive yesterday. It was physically impossible for Malinin to make it to Beijing in time, even if Malinin had somehow managed to pass the COVID protocols and get on a plane immediately (which would also have been impossible).

Second, substitutions are not permitted between the team event and individual event.

Third, event if they were, substitutions are never permitted after the draw, which had already taken place on Sunday.
