Team USA files Appeal to receive medal prior to Closing Ceremony

This! It's the only thing that makes sense. They won their medals fair and square so give it to them, give them the ceremony they deserve. The potential upgrade can arrive by post later and at least this way they won't be robbed of their Olympic moment.

The issue here is that the IOC does not want to give out the medals because it doesn't want to give ROC their medals. There is a strong negative narrative in rewarding a team that includes an athlete positive for doping. I feel for the USA and the Japanese athletes but I doubt it will happen, unless the IOC decides not to award the gold medals at this point... The Canadian 4X100 relay team just got the news of an upgrade on their bronze to silver due to a positive test in Tokyo from a GBR athlete... this sucks but it will take time ...

Russian Olympic Committee president Stanislav Pozdnyakov basically said he's not going to give up team gold So how is he going to keep the gold when they haven't been handed out. He also can't stop them from changing the results
I don't imagine it has been done before (or is even allowed?!), but I think only the Silver and Bronze team medals should be awarded. Those athletes shouldn't be deprived of their Olympic moment because the top finishers didn't play by the rules. I'm sure it won't happen, just wishful thinking on my part.

Don't penalize those who are not under review and don't reward those who still are.

I'd love to hear from Debbi Wilkes of Canada on this as she went through this situation many years ago in the Olympic Pairs final of 1964. You may know Debbi from her commentary on CBC & CTV.

In 1987, Kilius and Baumler's disqualification was overturned on appeal but the medals were not redistributed again instead Kilius/Baumler and Wilkes/Revell are considered co-silver medalists. "

I disagree. I understand the athletes want to have the ceremony at the Olympics, but do the Americans really want to give the Gold medal to Russians? Especially sice Russia might get DQ? And in that case, if Russia gets their medals now, they will never return it. Czech female biathlon relay finisbed fourth at Sochi. But then the Silver Russian really got DQ due to doping years later, so The Czech Republic would get Bronze. They still don't have it. Russia refuses to return the medals and the standings were not upgraded.

You know, the ROC athletes, apart from Kamila, could argue they also deserve theirs because it's not even sure what would happen here... as a matter of fact, don't the USA request to get their silver? What does that imply? We will take this now and wait in case it's upgraded?

I'm sorry, but was it "Americans" who put years of work to be at Olympics or Athletes? The decision was made by people who won it, not some people who sit in front of TV and think they have right to decide what's best for athletes and that's how it should be.

I have the feeling the IOC will want to do this ceremony ONLY once, when it's right, with a full, definitive podium no upgrading later. Right now, it's putting pressure on making a decision they cannot make about the results of the team event. I don't think that's fair honestly...

yup i know... i posted extensively in the doping thread about athletes shortchanged of their olympic moment. I totally am sympathetic about it... There are many cases like that. I feel for the athletes as I said, at the same time, there is enough scandal around it and I don't think we need an incomplete podium on top of it... Does the ISU even have a rule about DQ in the team event if ONE athlete is caught? Anyways, I am going to bed
i haven't slept to watch the pairs, maybe I will "get" things differently after a few hours of rest.
