I think it was quite obvious. And no big walls of text trying to justify Liza's victory can change that.

It reminds me of Dick Button* commentary, to paraphrase, she hasn't put in her time yet... one of the most infuriating parts of figure skating

*he was speaking about Sasha Cohen at Nationals her first senior Nationals against Michelle Kwan

It’s obviously not obvious when it’s that close.
It certainly could have gone either way.

At that margin, it’s a basically a dead heat. Judges gave the decision to Liza just barely.

It’s like a boxing match being scored 96-94, 94-96, 96-94.

Liza winning wasn’t a robbery, just like Liza losing wouldn’t have been either.

Kamila's rivals must be looking on during training feeling sick in their stomachs. She is making quite the statement in this video

They can't come close to her for components, but now the jumps are backs. She looks strong.

Kamila seems to have timed it perfectly. She will be peaking for the world championship in 4 weeks time.

Well, I wonder if Kamila got her 4T back?

The reports of her demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Not a surprise, she just wasn’t going to roll over. She is too much of a fighter and a competitor to do that.
8/8 landed. 7/8 landed perfectly. I thought she'd be knocked out in the first round, then I thought no way she gets through against Akateva.

With Supersonic it was practically a tie, they both did amazing. Pity it wasn't a final.
I think they need to somehow start seeding the skaters.

Of course, the question becomes what system do you use to seed since this is the inaugural event, but intuitively you know that the 2 semifinalists should be on the opposite ends of the draw and Kamila should be the number 1 seed.

I agree. Partial seeding was there when the other four girls (Gordeeva, Zinina, Rubtsova and Gorbatcheva) were sent to qualification, but yes, the seeding should be like 1 and 2 can meet only in finals. On the other hand the rules for seeding would have to be setttled, because Sonik is two time junior champion of Russia but during the GP series Mura achieved higher overall standing.

Show news: Daria Usacheva is going to be doing shows for Averbukh, not sure when. I'm really suspicious if she's not going to return to competition post-injury. He references that she was at all the Ice Age shoots (references that she's friends with Shcherbakova, so not sure if he's saying she was at all of Shcherbakova's episodes or all episodes) which sounds like a lot of time, that someone who is elite level training probably doesn't have time for

1% chance she returns to competitions. Shcherbakova 0%.

Her situation is rather complicated, even if the Russians are allowed back by next season she wouldn't get a GP as she is very behind in the rankings rn. She has never had an ultra c jump and likeliness of her getting one now is low too and even if she would come back with her triples and 3-3 she was very likely to drop out of the national team anyway due to the influx of ultra c jumpers at nats, so there goes her funding either way. She needs to work regardless whether she wants to continue competing next season or not, so im not ruling her come back out completely but I wonder if she really has any motivation left? Especially as unlike skaters like Rika or Bradie she would be coming back to no guaranteed international assignments.

Time moves quickly as far as the Russian ladies are concerned.

If you are forced out of competition, the place you leave and the place you return to are 2 different lands.

Daria has an uphill climb for sure. And Mount Russian Ladies is very steep and the tallest mountain in figure skating, so it’s not an easy ascent at the best of times.

1% is still not zero. So I’m keeping the faith. Haha

Anna at 0, I’m already at peace with that. She gave her heart and soul, left it all on the ice, so let her enjoy her retirement and the spoils of victory.

It makes it easier because she didn’t leave any unfinished business behind, she won everything you can win. Her and her fans don’t have the “what if” hanging over them. That’s huge.

We have the photos of her holding up her world championship gold, her Olympic gold and her 3 Russian Championships gold.

Going out on top is a great way to go out. Now she has time for ice shows, commercials and photo shoots and long interview segments. Even has time to write a book.

On one hand I see her returning to competition because she literally had 1 senior international competition and it wasnt like she wasnt doing well at the time. So I could see her making an attempt to compete in Rus Nats this or next year. On the other hand, she has no ultra-c element, god knows how much her injury has diminished her ability and she probably is a lot taller and heavier than the last time we saw her. Also is Eteri really going to keep her when she really has nothing going for her. In the past Eteri had a lot of background middling skaters but back then Alina was her best skater and her best jump was a 3Lz3lo. Now Eteri has all these children with consistent quads, I doubt she will need Daria. The only average skater she keeps with her is Morisi and he's already jumped ship himself for his own use

This is all wonderful analysis no doubt, but my heart says that her being carried off shouldn‘t be the last memory we have of her in competition. And I know sometimes you don’t go out the way you envisioned, but I selfishly want her back, even if it’s for one event. I hope it happens and doesn’t remain wishful thinking on my part.

I think Daria would be a great chance of continuing her career if she skated in a minor league like the ISU but that would require a change of citizenship which is a difficult process and involves upending her life.

It is somewhat of a curse for a skater of Daria's ability to be forced to contend in the FFKKR major league, but I suppose an athlete always wants to measuring themselves against the very best in the world which she has to do even in training. Imagine going to training and looking around, there's Kamila, Akateva, Petrosyan. 1, 2, 3 in the world

In the ISU minor league Daria could have a long and fruitful career skating into her mid to late 20s like a Mariah Bell or Amber Glenn if she was in one of the weaker federations. There would be no shame in finding ways to compete in the ISU minor league for one of the weaker federations. Many an NFL player have found success in the CFL, soccer players have extended their careers going from Europe to the MLS.

I was just rewatching Skate America with Sasha and Daria-and it made me so sad-I believe this was Daria's last competition, and she was so wonderful. Skating careers can be so short and fleeting, but I'm glad I got to see her live in Vegas-for what I think was her last skate before the injury happened. I hope she has a successful show career that brings financial stability.

I always rewatch that program. I miss Daria she is such a beautiful skater and I feel sad too. Having the ban is just a double whammy!! Kseniia too did well last season. Both elegant and exquisite skaters. I find it very hard to watch any of the grand prix without the Russian women. So many juniors haven't even had the chance to compete internationally. I have no doubt Sofia Akatieva, Muravieva, Zhilina etc would all be reaping the rewards. At least Sasha and Anna got to the Olympics and medalled! So many careers potentially lost now! I do hold on to a glimmer of hope for Daria and Maiia.
