Ladies Long Program

none of the top skaters performed to their potential which was disappointing....but congrats to Yuna, Caro and Mao!!! aside from that huge gut-wrenching fall in the beginning, I thought Mao fought back brilliantly and earned her title. :agree:

love the wacky placements of this event:

7. Kimmie Meissner (9th SP, 12th FS)
8. Laura Lepisto (21st SP, 7th FS)
9. Kiira Korpi (4th SP, 17th FS)
etc. etc.

interesting that every single skater in the competition changed placements from the SP to the FS....except one precious gem:

14. Mira Leung (14th SP, 14th FS)

guess you can't say she isn't consistent.

How about Asada, 2nd in the short and 2nd in the free?

Carolina with higher choreography, interpretation, and TRANSITION scores than Yu-Na? GMAFB.

Yu-na is just as slow as molasses. To me, she eased out almost all aspects of her skating, whether it is transitions, spins, steps. Does she deserve a bronze over Nakano? I don't think so.

It really bothers me people judge by reading the feed that viewers (kindly) report on the board. And also don't go and see the program with a notepad before talking...

For the sake of argument, Kostner deserved every point under the rules. But I think the rules (as currently formulated) are awful and will alienate the more knowledgeable viewers and not create the new fans that figure skating needs).

There's an intangible aspect to figure skating along with all the bean counting.

Back when it was widely popular (in the US at least), figure skating owed a lot of said popularity to that intangible factor. Like the famous definition of obscenity: I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. In opera I think they call it 'il sacro fuoco' the sacred flame, the elusive quality that separates the flawed-but-great from the technically superior but only very, very good.

Tonight, Kostner didn't have it, Asada didn't have it, Kim only had it sporadically (kind of an off night for her). Nakano had it.

A judging system that can't recognize and reward that is the _wrong_ judging system for figure skating.

Nakano was breathtaking. Placements in figure skating competitions are almost a joke to me.

Isn't sloppy like trademark of Europeans? Something is always lacking.

Then underrotation and wrong edges seem to be a non-European thing. There are very few jumps from the Europeans that were downgraded. Not just here, it was like that all sesaon long, if you compare 4CC with European Championships and during the Grand Prix.

But - sorry, I forgot: the rule of calling for underrotation and wrong edges were made so Northern-American and also Asian skaters can get dinged for it - and the Europeans will get better results. It is absolutely impossible that there may be a difference in technique or quality. It is all one big scheme to make the USA lose three spots and give those evil Europeans better results. Kostner fully rotated 7 triples? Conspirancy! They just don't punish her! Evil, evil European judging panel and tech caller.

Was it just me or was Yu-Na (who was also wonderful) a bit tired in the last minutes of her program? Her footwork seemed a tad tentative and her jumps didn't have much height left towards the end of the program. (By the way, who gave Yu-Na +1 GOE for the single Lutz?)

Yes.. Yu-na had only been back on the ice for 3 weeks since her injury...She and her coach had expressed concern about her stamina, and she even said that she was actually more confident last year.. I suspect practices weren't great, and her and Orser seemed really thrilled with her skate.. So I think she should be quite proud of herself, for coming back in the long.

How about Asada, 2nd in the short and 2nd in the free?

Isn't that what happened to Miki last season?

Seriously, congrats to Mao for breaking the "k"urse. (she is the first skater since '95 who won worlds without the letter "k" in her name)

+1 GOE for Yu-na

I think one of the judges for ladies FS is Korean. Look at the marks she gave it to Na-young Kim.

Judging based on nationalities and on skaters' reputation and profiles is still prevalent in the sport.

Cant believe you wrote that, its always the case when american dont do well they find fault in each and everything. do you think with what american performed they deserved 3 spots, i would say they are very lucky to have 2.

Very, very European here - so that was sarcasm. I just feel a bit tired about these conspiracy ideas, that started before the competition even started. And no, the Americans were lucky that nearly everybody had a dismal skate today - the three Americans together fell 5 times and got 7 underrotation calls + 5 edge calls. They don't deserve better placements, (except maybe better than Korpi, that girl was lucky that she was skating in the last group) but I have to say that both Kimmie's and Bébé's performances were enjoyable and I hope that Kimmie comes back really really strong.

I think you guys should study the judging system...and start understanding that sometimes completing all of your elements (or even doing less but with more points) yields better results...it's not 6.0 anymore...the clean performance does not necessarily win

I know more than enough about the judging system, and even though I can understand why under CoP a sloppy skate from Kostner wins over Yu-Na or Yukari, that doesn't mean I have to agree with it. I feel that Kostner wuzgifted, Yu-Na wuzrobbed, and props to Yukari for at least grabbing the performance of the night.

It was a good competition. YuNa got dumped in the Short but she was excellent in the LP except for a boo boo. Mao had a slide fall I believe taking off on her 3A. She is a master of the technical and deserved her win. Carolina could have won but she didn't. Too many boo boos. Meier had the crowd. Europeans like Europeans and that's what it's about. They did give Yukari a huge roar but the judges didn't buy it and the judges got booed. Bibi did her usual 2 minute perfection and then went down hill. Kimmie just fell twice. I think the judges do not like Ashley and that's the way it will be.

Laura Lepisto was wonderful, so much better than Korpi.

I don't know if the US got 1 or 2 for next year.

Joe

Yuna got a +1GOE from one of the judges for a popped lutz? must have a pretty good one..:agree:

I remember Mao got positive GOE for popped 3A last season.
I also noticed one judge gave +1 GOE on Mao's (f)lutz this time.

Why even bother to open the can of warms??
It happens all the time.
