2023 World Figure Skating Championships Men's Short Program

I just had a thought. Although he is representing Croatia, Jari Kessler is from Italy. As his surname suggests, he is from the German speaking part of the country, the South Tyrol.

I know that the Finnish name "Jarno" is very popular in Italy, with a lot of people there naming their kids after Finnish motorbike racer Jarno Saarinen, who was killed in the 1973 Italian 250cc Grand Prix. For example, Italian Formula 1 driver Jarno Trulli was named after him.

Your comment started me wondering - is "Jari" a shortened form of "Jarno"?

It shortened from Jalmari, Hjalmar in Swedish. It came popular when famous Finnish writer Jalmari Finns was called as Jari.

I was trying to be cheeky. I didn't realise that you were actually thinking of that!

I had to change the picture there now, though, because my original choice didn't display.
