Ummm Jun was only 2ish points behind in TES.

I love Ilia but he needed to be cleaner and nerves got to him a bit tonight.

Also, despite always being very musical it's not as if Junhwan was getting 90 in PCS his first senior season. He won his silver fair and square. (And I'm American)

The top 6 final standings were just amazing. Didn't want any of them to come in anywhere but first it was that good.

I guess, but I think it's unfair to say Ilia just jumped and that was all. That step sequence was so enjoyable to watch, he was really into it!

I just hope people won't judge Ilia too hard and write him off as just as jumper.

But I'm probably biased because my brain is still blown by how he did all those quads, practically an entire programs worth! The energy and strength that must take!

I did not say Ilia just jumped quads and didn't do anything else.

I simply expressed that doing as many quads as possible is not enough when all aspects of skating are being considered (independently) in scoring and are being rewarded accordingly.

In fact, I was not just thinking of Ilia when I typed out that comment. He's far from the only one who is beaten by skaters with lower technical content because they are more complete and well-balanced skaters. Or skaters with better PCS who are beaten by skaters that are weaker in PCS but have high enough TES scores to make up for the deficit.

The whole point of this scoring system (even if that was seemingly forgotten in some aspects for years) was to reward both technical and artistic prowess, i.e. balance!

But he wasn't necessarily skating with all the best PCS skaters in the same arena. In these scenarios, I think judges have to factor that in. Otherwise the technical skater is going to have a major advantage unfairly.

Sasha Trusova won the free program at the Olympics just focusing on the jumps, so I fail to see how this isn't a legit path for a skater to take. Program components aren't even just artistry in the first place. Skating skills and transitions also fall under the category and in some ways that's difficulty, which is why I've never understood why skaters usually have individual component categories so close together on average. Surely, there are skaters who have great skating skills, but poor interpretation, for example? This is why I try to watch the skating without thinking of the scores...because it makes no sense to me.

But did she win the Olympics though? I don't think anyone is saying focusing on tech is not the way. But there certainly is no point crying when the person loses on the PCS when their PCS capability is not up to par.

One word. Consistency. If Ilia starts showing that kind of consistency and gets better programs it will rise also.
