2023 World Figure Skating Championships Men's Free Skate

Despite myself I was awake for the final flight. ;) What a great comp.

Jason😭 What a gift you are to skating, thank you thank you thank you for coming back.

Kévin! Love that program, love the passion, love your happy tears.

Jun! Putting it all together at just the right time, the elegance, the timing, a beautiful skate.

Shoma! A deserving champion, grit and artistry in one package. Heal that ankle.

Ilia, you are a competitor and a force of nature, but the sport is not ice jumping (no matter what your team may tell you). The judges are telling you, you can jump quints, you need more. Get some Rohene choreo and prove it :)

Keegs: I don’t care how he skated, how could you not cry?😢

No doubt. But I don't want it to go higher than those who really show their ice skills (excluding jumps) just because he's gotten more cleaner, but not better regarding his blade work. But we all know consistency automatically equals gradual increase in PCS, much to the incredulity of this sport. And to that I say, I will not be shocked, but will also add that I really hope Illia's skating skills will improve greatly by next Olympics, if not next season.
Nathans blade work was nothing to write home about at Ilia's age either and he improved so i'm sure Ilia will put in the work too. I'm sure his coaches know what he needs.

Subjective.....both those ladies are Russian. So if you still feel there is bias in that judging, and 'due to cultural differences' , then I say you hang on to that theory, just not many will buy into it.
Well, my only real point is that if Sasha had landed all her jumps cleanly, I would not have questioned her winning. I can't tell a deep edge from a shallow edge and I don't care and I don't think I ever will. It might be called figure skating, but I don't care about blade work at all in a matter of fact.

I don't understand why people are angry on Ilia's behalf. He got rewarded, he got bronze, for crying out loud!

At the same time, it gives Ilia motivation to improve, and it shows that the ISU is serious about what kind of skating they want to see in the future. While it's true, Nathan started winning at his second appearance at worlds, Ilia can walk his own path to figuring out the balance.

The final warmup group was a great experience for all the men. It reminded me of 2021, where there were so many skates in a row that really built on each other (If we ignore Yuzu falling from first to third, that is. That wasn't as fun to watch). Having that experience, of feeding off such an electric crowd, is such a valuable experience, and something that Ilia will really benefit from in the future.

Every man in the last group had their own special brand of skating to offer, and I enjoyed all of them. With respect to Ilia, I agree with those who are impressed by the technical (though quads are maybe a bit overdone) but less so of the rest of his skating. He's just not there yet as a complete skater. Comparison, in order of oldest to youngest:
Keegan, age 31, this was his 5th Worlds (plus 2 Olympics under his belt)
Jason, age 28, 5 Worlds + 2 Olympics
Kevin, age 25, 4 Worlds + 1 Olympics
Shoma, age 25, 7 Worlds + 2 Olympics
Junhwan, age 21, 3 Worlds + 2 Olympics
Ilia, age 18, 2 Worlds

There's just no way we should expect Ilia, at this stage of his career, to be in the same artistic league as these more experienced guys. He's a work in progress. For what was put out on the ice in this competition by all the men, a bronze is a very fair result for Ilia and nothing to be ashamed of. The answer to the question of What Next? for training is in those protocols....if Team Ilia will look closely at them and take them to heart.

Although Ilia's 4A got positive GOE, it was only the 7th most valuable jump in the whole LP competition. Uno, Cha, Tomono and Rizzo all got better scores for their individual quads.
And that's criminal.
I don't know how those other quads looked like but no quad even with maximum GOE should beat a 4A with positive GOE. Lowering the BV was really a bad thing. Sometimes i feel like quality is over-rewarded compared to difficulty.

You wrote earlier.....'I'd argue that the PCS categories of performance, interpretation, and composition are subjective, due to cultural differences.' And then you say 'you don't care', 'it don't matter'.

If it doesn't matter, and you don't care, then there's no point positing into things that you have neither interest in. There in lies the problem. You don't care, and self-admittedly, you don't know, yet you have a lot to say about it.

I said I didn't care about edge work, which falls under skating skills. That doesn't mean I don't care about performance at all, just that I'll always think a program that is technically impressive is better than one that is artistically impressive. I've watched figure skating that way since I was a kid being more impressed by Tara Lipinski and Sarah Hughes than Michelle Kwan. Maybe age should have changed that, but it didn't, possibly because I was born at the end of the 80s. Figures were gone the first time I saw figure skating and I think that has a huge influence on how I watch the sport.

I agree that Ilia need better material to work with. His Short programt this year fit Ilia like a glove. Loud and a bit in your face and daring you to look away. That's Ilia for you. I think that he work with different types of music. I would like them to pick something that next year that a little less dreary. I mean this long program was depressing and somber. I hope next year they give him happier music. He still very young for a skater so let him act like it.
I think though there is a bais against skaters from North America though. I hard to misd at times. This year's Four Continents is clear that example of that going on. If we use a complete skater model then Keegan should have won the gold medal in a runaway because he has the complete package and had the best skate of his life. Kao Mura should have never been close but he won and with how people jump on Ilia's PCS and basic skating skills all the time on this site look at Kao performance during his long which was basically jumping and spinning every 20-30 seconds and fluttering his arms around in attempt to be artistic with no connection with the music he was skating to yet he won over a beautiful complete skating package with jumps, spins, and chorography on perfect harmony that was just glorious to watch. That what I am talking about. The ISU has bais towards Asia right because frankly they are basically paying the ISU bills right now and the fact the United States has so far off the skating map as a market is not helping matters any.
Also the ISU wants a certain personality as well. When bring up Nathan Chen he basically was what the ISU in how his personality was which is quiet, humble, docile and hopefully obedient. Ilia basic personality is the complete opposite of this and it making the ISU uncomfortable because they do not know to handle him. Basically most skaters do as their national federation tell them. Nathan did this perfectly along with going along with whatever NBC wanted meant that ISU did not have any worries about him. Now here comes Ilia who I think could basically care less what the USFS and the ISU thinks about the way he comes off. I mean how many kids go off at 15-6 years old create a social media account which he calls himself "QuadgOd" and then post pictures of all of his outrageous jumping elements for the world to see. He is telling the world about him and most likely it driving the USFS nuts because they are afraid he going to do something that the ISU will not like. Ilia is going to be the rebel of the figure skating world . I really hope that if moves out to California alone that Raf keeps him on fairly short leash to protect him from himself because the parallels between him and Christopher Bowman are scarry. Both of them are young, attractive, outrageous talented, charming, and rebels with devil may care personalities. The things that are different is that Ilia has a crazy work ethic , no mental problems, loving parents, and no problems with illegal drugs. But they have a lot in common and look what happened to Christopher and I never want Ilia to turn out like him because it was a great tragedy. A skater who could have been a legend brought down by own demons. That what could happen to him USFS please let him have some freedom so he can breathe so that will not be self destructive. Don't try to force him into the standard box because he not going to fit and will try to break out of it and will not be pretty. The next two to three years are going to be a roller coaster remember Ilia is going barely 21 years old at the 2026 Olympics if it goes right he could have to two more Olympic Quads after that. So he could be one of the greatest skaters of all time but we also be careful very careful on how we handle him and his antics.

Though I consider the resultz correct, I feel sorry for Kevin Aymoz.
Two times on fourth place at Europeans and this time again.
Without any doubt he delivered the competition of his life, but it was not enough.

IMO Jason Brown deserved the highest components of the evening. He ist an artist, you can see him feeling the music.
It must be natuaral born, nobody can learn it that way.
True - and also I think it must be remembered that PCS is not just performance ability/showmanship. The skating skills are highly technical and that is also where Jason stands above the others. There are many with performance ability (Deniss - whom I adore) that don't have Jason's technical SKATING ability. Too many folks (not referring to Aklaus) think Jason gets the PCS scores he gets because he's good at interpteting the music. He IS, but there is much more to skating skills that that.

Comparison with 2022 Worlds Men Free:

Legend is: 2023 / 2022 (tendency)

Quad attempts: 43 / 44 (-1)
Quad success: 36 / 31 (+5 much better)
Quad success ratio: 83,7% / 70,5% (much better)

Pops: 11 / 11 (=)
Falls: 7 / 16 (-9 much better)

Happy skaters: 16 / 15 (+1 but this is very subjective)
PBs: 7 / 7 (=)

Thank you for doing this. :points: for staying focused(I was exhausted half way into the third group already, at noon) Your marks show an unusually good competition for men, as it was. 16 happy skaters, sad for the 8 who were not happy. I’m happy.
