2023-24 Programs by Discipline

same here.... it's fine that some skaters are not versatile artists... There are many even among the top ones who keep bringing back same old same old... but yeah... though it is fine, it gets boring for us, dedicated fans.

I think that's quite a dig at Loena... she did an elegant, classic free skate last year and she did it well, despite not being always being on top of her game. So this "club-style" is one that suits her well and she likes it - with the way she dresses, her hobbies, I guess this is music she simply enjoys personally. And it's not even a song that has been used a thousand times nor is it the same as the Latin pop/RnB she used last season.
I think the people critisizing this simply don't like the music or Loena's style and aren't into this at all. Plus we don't know her free skate yet, right?

In general I am often not a fan of remixes and combi-edits, especially for skating. I am not even a special fan of Loena, but I think she's an amazing skater who tends to be underrated because she doesn't do too many "classical" programs and goes too much "sexy" for some people. I mean, okay, if you don't like it (I am not that enthusiastic about it myself), but I don't think it's fair to say she's not a versatile artist because of that.

caveat: I haven't heard the songs in full.
That being said, just listening to what little you can hear in the clip, for now I'll go with "meh". I feel like between last year's SP, last year's gala program, the exhibition she did before to "Circus", and now this, Loena's been taking us to the club often enough.

Why include show programs in this?

I don't think my post is "quite a dig at Loena" That's your perception but it doesn't reflect my words at all. Be careful there ;) My post is just an observation : I like the music and i like Loena a lot. At the same time, her team often brings the same kind of packaging for her. It was the same for Javier. That didn't prevent him to win two world championships and please the skating fans. And it's true that some skaters are more versatile than others. I don't think Loena would in the lead group when considering that aspect of skating. She is definitely in the lead group for MANY other features of skating.

Why include show programs in this?

I included show programs because a lot of skaters do like to switch it up for show programs, among other reasons, because they want to showcase versatility and show a different side. But your point is valid. Show programs needn't be included. My personal opinion still is that I'm not particularly digging this SP music selection for now, but as I said, I haven't heard all of it so I'm definitely willing to be won over.

Just a note about Loena and her program choices. A big factor is also that she is from Belgium where Techno is very popular and the club scene is quite busy. Either way, she is a versatile skater and has shown that in the past. Let her skate to something that she likes for at least one program and makes her happy. One of the worst things as a skater is not having a say in music and being miserable to skate what you have been "given."

I'll see myself out now.:slink:

It was never intended for ice dance on my part - cause I know how to use a calendar - duh!
I thought it would be a fun short program for singles or pairs or a fun exhibition.

Don't worry, I realised that. I was adding that caveat for two reasons:

  1. because Ic3Rabbit brought Ice Dance into the conversation
  2. because it provided me with a way to bring The Housemartins into the conversation

I am a big fan of Paul Heaton's music (be it as part of The Housemartins; as part of The Beautiful South; as part of a duo with Beautiful South bandmate Jacqui Abbott; or on his own), so any excuse to showcase it and I'll take it!

Public Service Announcement, because it's received a good bit of commentary/speculation here:

Our friend @Arriba627 (who deserves a big shout out) has shared a link to a show version of Ilia Malinin's SP on his Fan Fest thread.

Personally, I think it's step in the right direction. Looks reasonably good for early days, with room for improvement.
I watched some of it. I like this version of that song. I'm on board more for sure.

Ice Dance was brought into the conversation b/c much of this thread has been discussing the 80s theme and ice dance choices.

Honestly the best guy to do the Christopher Walken shuffle dance just retired from Stars on Ice - Kurt Browning.
The second best man for the job would be Jeremy Abbott. The third guy would be Gary Beacom.
I promise to stop derailing this thread. I have been very bad about this today - sorry mods.

Ra-Ra-Rasputin!!!

Boney M - "Rasputin"

Surprised you didn't know the song. It was really big in Europe. Unfortunately, it was from 1978, so too early for Ice Dancing.

And it is popular on here. I'm going to quote a few old posts from elsewhere on the forum to make sure that the posters see the video you linked to. Because it is great!

now i want a Rasputin program...i mean i need it! i neeeeddd iiiiit :tantrum:

OMG the rink DJ is playing Ra-Ra-Ra-Rasputin.

Give them an award :laugh2:

OOh - another good idea for a ice dance tune - Ra Ra Rasputin!

Are they playing Rasputin? This DJ has taste, especially with Russian test skaters happening at the same time

Rasputin is very popular again these days. I think it may be because of TikTok.

I could add in a lot more, but I think that's enough.

I love Rasputin... and at one point it must have been my son's favourite song... but it would be so crazy to use it at the moment
Ooh, those Russians...

I just reeeeally want someone, anyone, to use the lesser known parts of Scheherazade, The Sleeping Beauty, Turandot, Madame Butterfly. Whenever someone skates to these popular ballets/operas, I can pick exactly which pieces they're going to use! Every skater uses the same pieces in the same order as everybody before them. :( :( :(

Those were the top three in my head but I never suggested them b/c we were talking about eligible skaters and competitive programs in this thread.

Another who is pro that would do it justice is Elladj Balde.

Yah.. once I listened to the lyrics I was

Ok, I don't know what happened here. The first time I clicked the link it took me to a vid of a cat rubbing its face against a hedgehog. The second time it took me to Hiddles dancing.
