kimmie's ad

What's wrong with Kimmie's answer??? She's an athlete as any other figure skater... have you seen their bodies??? They're all muscle, and all the work that involves keepin fit; hours on the ice, off the ice... almost everyday. They train more than football players or soccer players and as an athlete myself, it'd be hard for me to keep Meissner's rythm. And Im a martial arts athlete!!! Figure skaters are GREAT athletes, coz even when their programs are demanding on top of that they must look graceful or at least try to... MY RESPECT TO ALL FIGURE SKATERS!!!

Kimmie's Ad

I think people are entitled to their opinion. I see nothing "bashing" in any of the posts. After all, Kimmie called herself a jock. I now understand why I've never warmed up to Kimmie's skating. I now realize that, for me, she is over-the-top athletic. I prefer a more delicate touch on the ice for the ladies.

Although I have liked Kimmie's skating dresses, she never looks quite right in them. Kimmie looks much more comfortable in pants and athletic clothes. When others comment on how pretty she looks in her skating dresses, I always stop and ask myself, "why didn't I notice that"?

Kimmie seems to be a very sweet and giggly kid but she looks physically able to punch someone's lights out.

Dizzy

I would love to see a top-lady try something different then "I'm pretty, I'm graceful, I look good in pink and I love flowers and cuddly teddy bears."

It's interesting...because doesn't Kimmie wear pretty dresses and skate to pretty music too? Is Yu-Na Kim less of an athlete than Kimmie because she wore a pink dress when she can land a 3-3? Is it a fault to be graceful?

There's nothing wrong with being graceful, but I think it would be nice if we had at least ONE top lady who displays the style that I refer to as "athletic artistry" -- the ability to interpret the music but without all the balletic frills and nuances. (2 examples of ladies who displayed this type of skating were Debi Thomas and Tonya Harding -- yes, some of you may roll your eyes at the mention of the latter, but IMHO there was never anything wrong with Tonya's musical interpretation; she just chose not to interpret it in the way that was popularly accepted for the ladies.). I think of the current crop, Yukari Nakano comes the closest to displaying this, and Kimmie is more than capable of it if she can get her technical problems ironed out. Certainly Kimmie does not look the type to do the "delicate little ballerina" thing; a more athletic style IMO looks better on her than her trying to skate like Yu-Na Kim or Mao Asada or Sarah Meier or Caroline Zhang or really just about MOST of the top ladies these days. The MEN, for some reason, are "allowed" to show a wide variance of styles, and that's what made the Men THE category to watch this past season, IMHO. The ladies are essentially all skating in the exact same style and it's quite frankly getting boring, I don't care HOW talented these ladies are. Yukari is at least bringing something different to the table, and Kimmie could as well.

re. Nessun Dorma: I think this is a program that had a LOT of potential and if she hadn't had the technical problems she had throughout the season, it could have really SOARED by Worlds. But if you're [justifiably] concerned with trying not to fall on your jumps, it's rather hard to make any kind of artistic statement. I think it could have been a signature program for her -- had she not done it while having a bad year.

Every person has their own view. Some people think that sport or “jock” is the best part of figure skating. That’s just opinion. And there are many kind of views, including figure skaters themselves have differing views.

There are many kinds of figure skaters, each have their own kind of talent, and each can be appreciated in their own way.

But for me, I certainly would not even watch figure skating if there were no beautiful art in it.

What she said.

I think it's just very hard to believe that all these ladies have more or less the same natural style. Why don't they skate to the Matrix - soundtrack (come on, imagine that - one of the Asian ladies in leather à la Trinity...)? Of course some of them are graceful and balletic and I love watching them (Vahamaa, Zhang, Meier...). But there were always skaters among the ladies who didn't skate like that (Slutskaya, the early Midori Ito, Thomas). I would love to see more diversity among the ladies and I think that Kimmie is actually someone who could provide some diversity, a different style.

I think when it comes to olympic competition - any competition - the SPORT/ATHLETICS should be rewarded greatly...

Thank GOD for girls like her who would rather break the mold and not just fit the stereotype of a pretty little ballerina out there. Not all girls are like that and they shouldn't be told it's wrong if they're not.

.

All I can say is, thank GOD for skaters that STILL care about art and would rather break the mold and not just fit the stereotype of being a "jock", which is all the rage in our culture right now, where artistry is tossed out the window. Not all skaters are "jocks" and they shouldn't be told it's wrong if they're not.

wow, all this angst over a little comment...certainly a loaded one given the culture of skating and its fans, but nothing wrong with it. Actually, it's people like her that might help boost the argument of whether skating is/is not a sport. (Well, is it?? :P )

I'm not saying artistry is wrong, I'm saying it's not the only way and Kimmie shouldn't have to be forced into that mold just because it's how skating has always done it.

That's fine. You have your view and I have mine.

My impression from your earlier was post was different.

And that was my fault because I didn't do a well written post...

I just get tired of the stereotypes, mainly because I'm not a girly girl, I guess.

I'm not saying it's wrong. I love skaters like Yuka Sato and Yu-Na Kim, etc. And they are just as much an athlete and all, but they are being themselves. Kimmie, to me, skates and looks like she's trying to fit the 'type' and so she's not being herself when she competes. It's completely different when she's doing a show program... they fit so much better!

That being said she's a lovely skater whenever she skates, to me. No, she's not Mao Asada, but she shouldn't have to be.

personally, i would not read to much into this quote. She is doing ads for Under Armor, a company that makes tough athletic clothes, mostly for men. She will say whatever she feels that the company would like her to say.

:agree: That nails it, IMHO.

What would we expect the ad to say? "Buy an Under Armour sports bra. It will help you interpret the wonderful music of Turandot better."

I would love to see that!

Moving on ... All elite figure skaters are amazing athletes. Some (both men & women) try to show more artistry in their programs, while others prefer to focus on the athletic feats. Nothing wrong with that. Like someone else mentioned, that is what makes the men's division so dang watchable these days. The guys are a veritable pu-pu platter of styles and techniques. Tasty!

I would like to see Kimmie try skating to the Matrix for next season. It might be a good, different approach for her.

I agree :agree:

And I want to add that ballet style is not the only kind of art.
( Although I also like it )

In my opinion, the more creative, the more beautiful, the more original, the more styles, the more techniques, the more variety, the better.
