Skate Canada 2024 Junior and Senior Sectionals

ONT Junior Girls Free skate just ended.
I was less impressed with these skaters after watching this segment.
Megan was the class of the field. I enjoyed Michelle Lee the most. Will start watching GP France now

Watching the replay of the Alberta senior men:

I do like Ethan Scott. To Build A Home, I like the sincerity he brought to it. I think he met the TES free requirements here, so I hope he'll make it to Nationals. 107.28 for a total of 155.56 and he's happy with his score :) I didn't pay attention to his jump content here, his technical level didn't really matter for me, I just like him.

Christopher Hammer with In My Blood. I think the song works better as a short. I'll check out Junior Pairs to see how he does there, he's got the build for it. A little too much energy, he's popping a lot and the song is switching to Michael Jackson? Hopefully he'll have a better competition with pairs, 66.89 for 112.63 total :console:

Matthew Newnham - kept In This Shirt from last season. He's having some pops in the back half. He felt a little frantic, but it's his first competition of the season. I'd like to see him slow down a bit, feel the music a bit more. 124.97, total 188.27 for the win.

Skate Ontario should put chairs in the kiss and cry, the skaters and coaches look awkward standing there. I'm sure the skaters would like to sit after their program too.

3 falls for Natalie Roccatani, a pop, did get a combo after the pop. I had some issues with the stream, so missed the ending. She's looking happier in the kiss and Cry and smiling a bit, but they're taking time with the reviews. 70.79, total 109.85 into 3rd after 3 skaters, so she may end up finishing in last place. Hopefully she'll have a better competition at Challenge :console:

I still like Jessica Rousseau. If she makes it to Nationals, there'll be I Have Nothing jokes with her free. She ran out of steam at the end a bit, but she was happy with it. Got a 3T-3T in there. 73.33, 114.93 into 1st at the end of the first group. She looked like she was about to take a selfie with her coach in the kiss and cry. I'd do the same.

Amelia Orzel - she reminds me of Lia in the sense that they both smile a lot when they skate, she's looking at the audience, commentator noted that. She got the 2A in the back half that she'd popped before. 83.31, 129.46 total. Probably has some underrotations in there.

Abby Bouma - Back To Black in black. Like the song choice. 89.75, 136.8 into 1st at the end of the second group.

Looks like Fiona withdrew from the free, she wasn't called for the warm up.

If you come last in this Ladies event, I’m pretty sure you won’t qualify to the Challenger event

No Fiona?? I was waiting to see how she would do.

Maddie, Fiona, Gabby and Hetty all have byes…

They have 15 spots and 13 women competing for these spots. People with byes don't count towards the Challenge spots, including Hetty.

I also thought there was a minimum standard of 40 is TES score for free skate.

You know more than I. So, that is good. Maybe, that is why Natalie was okay

Miriam Kleiman - I think she's been one of the most consistent in sectionals. She should qualify for Nationals. 92.26, total 140.4, looking forward to seeing her at Challenge.

Caitlin Kukulowicz- voiceover in the beginning, not a fan of the voiceover. I tuned the voiceover out, so I missed the message of the program. It's from Love Actually? Thank you commentator. 91.8, 140.22 total

They could look at how the skaters do here and see if they are technically where they would need to be for Challenge. If they haven't met the TES by now, they may not meet it at Challenge and wouldn't qualify for Nationals there.

Katherine Medland Spence - ooh, she won! :jump:My stream gave out at the end, good job for winning! I was worried with the jump issues in the beginning.

I watched a bit of the Ontario Senior Rhythm Dance and then had stream issues.

Sales/Wamsteeker scored around 64. Their 80s songs were The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush (didn't know that Celine Dion was a cover) and Working For The Weekend by Loverboy.

If anyone gets an assignment for Zagreb out of sectionals, it'll probably be them. They seemed fine to me, but I'm not really an ice dance fan so I can't comment on the quality of their performance here.

I watched the Junior Ladies SP while watching GP France and only watched certain skates.

There are so many skaters from Quebec. I love that. I can’t believe only 8 make it to Challenger. Top 8 SP skates where all 40+.

Should be an interesting battle between Aleksa and Mely-Ann. Aleksa fell on both 3T and 3Lz. But, did all her other elements really well. Mely-Ann popped her lutz. But, landed an amazing 3S 3T. She served notice to Skate Canada that she has the technical difficulty to be sent to Junior Grand Prix next year.

I’m watching the Senior Women now. I can’t believe Justine has to skate here. But, I think it is good practice for the Challenger bronze medalist.

For Senior Women, I expect Justine, Rose and Audreane to be on the podium. Audreane is the current best skater from Canada not sent to any international event. So, rooting for her.
Edit: Is Sara-Maude competing here? Such a tough event.
Quebec should have more spots than Ontario. They have the most depth.

Wow 🤩!!! Justine!! Clean!!!
3F 2T, 3Lo, 2A (will be 1st till the end). 61.09 👏

Wow!! Marie-Maude!! Clean!!
Huge 3T 3T. 58.76👏

Rose 🤗!! Not the skate she wanted. 3T 3T (so) popped single jump, 2A. Just over 50. Will this skate be enough to even make the final flight?

Marie-France had the skate of her life. 51.67 ‼️ into 3rd and passing Rose 😳

First flight here for senior women is the one I'm interested in with Justine, along with Rose Theroux. I'm going to try to remember to switch to Senior Pairs for the Izzo/Ferland debut.

I've become a Justine fan since the summer competitions. She is looking really confident in her presentation. I want her to win bronze at Nationals, but then I want Sara-Maude to win it too. Hopefully she'll get another chance to earn her free TES. 61.09

I like Marie-Maude Pomerleau too! That was a strong short.

I think I missed it with some tech issues, but Rose Theroux had a pop there on the replay? 50.24, that's decent for her senior domestic debut. This was a really good first flight, I think Quebec should get more Challenge spots for women.
