Ilia Malinin

I have wondered what had happened to Ilia's 4F. Well, it's back, and in a Halloween costume at that.

Niceeeee. Hopefully he puts it into the FP. Going to need to amp up the programs a little bit with Yuma and Adam Siao Hm Fa competing.

Personally, I think he needs to skate the exact same programs he did at Skate America. They were glorious.

If Adam and Yuma can beat that, then they deserve the win. And honestly, if Ilia skates the same way, I don't think they can.

The same way as Skate America? For sure if he's clean as Skate America, he can win it.

So, Ilia got 101.58 in the SP. Had a wacky fall in the StSq, but he's in first by half a point. I was kind of surprised myself about it. But at least it was a fall in the StSq and not on a jump. It'll be tight tomorrow in the FP.

Other than a small glitch, well done, Ilia. And hope he keeps it together for the FS too.

Knowing Ilia watches the skater's scores before he goes on, he had to know just how great Adam did. He went out there and focused with the exception of one landing on a combo. He's in the final and has several weeks to organize because it's not going to be easy at all. For any of the men.
Hopefully that blade on one of his skates gets fixed because if I remember correctly, one of the tweets from GS on Ilia's comments said one of his blades broke.

Oh really? Didn't hear about that but he has until the GPF to sort it out. I love his SP and he skates it with a lot of commitment so maybe we'll see two outstanding programs from him. BTW, we haven't seen Shoma yet so lots of nail biting over here when they've all made an appearance.

Getting 2nd with a 304 point skate? Absolutely nothing to sneeze at. Just meant that 1st place was also outstanding. I think it was always going to be hard for Ilia to match how clean he was at Skate America, and he needed to do it here with Adam's technical content nearly matching his own. His major goal was to qualify for GPF, and he's done that.

Realistically, Ilia will also almost always be in this position of skating last in the LP if he skates well in the short program. He will just have to get used to watching someone bringing the house down right before him. In his last three competitions, he has had to watch Jun, Kevin, and now Adam have fantastic, thrilling skates. Ilia has the jumps. Now it's just learning to stay focused, calm the nerves, and deliver what he can do. Overall, I'd say he's done very well in these last two competitions.

It'll be interesting to see what his layout is for GPF. A lot of talk about adding back in the 4A or 4Lo, but how does he maintain stamina for the two quad combos at the back end of the program?
