2024 ISU International Adult Competition | Oberstdorf | May 12-17

You know what I was saying yesterday about Irina KIRJANEN (FIN) dispelling all the stereotypes about Finnish Ladies skaters.

Well, Agnes LINDINGER (FIN) conformed to them.

Everything was just beautiful.

She goes into 16th position.

Oh, the announcer says that the competition is over. Has the final skater withdrawn?

CaroLiza_fan

Aha, they just swapped the first two competitions around. So the group of 6 Bronze V ladies is now after the Silver II ladies instead of before them.

Livestream for the Bronze V Ladies FS is now on air.

YES!!!! We start with the Eagles!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

And it is a song that I haven't seen being skated to before - "Witchy Woman".

You can probably work out how Wendy BAUER (USA) was done up. ;)

I really enjoyed that.

CaroLiza_fan

And we go from a song I haven't seen being skated to before to a song I hadn't heard before.

Well, I kinda have. It was German version of "Fields Of Gold" that Helena VÄÄNÄNEN (FIN) was skating to. And it sounded like a male opera singer.

Although it was surreal hearing the song in a different language, it was a good programme.

She goes into the lead.

Awwww. I take it that is her grand-daughter that is sitting on her knee.

Still curious to know if she is anything to Milania VÄÄNÄNEN.

CaroLiza_fan

That is funny. Just after I mention a skater that has an Italian as their Ice Dance partner, we have an Italian skater!

And I am not sure you can get a programme that is any more Italian! I'm not sure if it was Andrea Boccelli that was singing, but it was something along his vein anyway.

Paola LONGO (ITA) goes into 2nd.

CaroLiza_fan

If this is not the same dress that Joanne JOHNSON (CAN) wore for her Artistic FS, it is mighty similar!

Thankfully, she did not have the same music issues today.

Everything about that was beautiful.

She goes into 2nd position.

CaroLiza_fan

When Marcela NOVOTNA (CZE)'s music started, I thought "yeah, she's rocking out again!"

But, it was actually a cover of "Love Hurts". Not sure who was singing, but it sounded like Rod Stewart to me. And it just didn't sound right to me.

The important hing was that she was really good!

She goes into the lead.

CaroLiza_fan

Rosa Maria GERVASONI (ITA) was skating to "Come Together" by the Beatles. And she was wearing a really beautiful navy blue dress with a white collar and the odd sparkly.

The skating was good. But, I'm pretty sure that the title is Marcella's.

Yep. Rosa Maria goes into 4th position.

CaroLiza_fan

Right. It's time for our first non-Singles skating competitions of the week. 7 Adult Pairs partnerships; followed by 3 Intermediate Pairs partnerships. The 7 Adult Pairs partnerships are arranged into a group of 3 partnerships; followed by a group of 4 partnerships.

Livestream for the Adult Pairs Artistic FS is now on air.

That was funny. The final skater, Bryan GRAYSON (AUS), was skating to "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John.

Was he making a statement?

I take it he is in some way connected to Louise GRAYSON (AUS), who was the second skater to skate in the previous competition.

Yep, she's sitting with him for his results. And from the body language, I would say she is more likely to be his wife than his sister.

Actually, seeing them together, they look like the stereotypical Pairs partnership. The size difference is perfect!

I don't know if they have ever tried Pairs skating, but they are not entered in either of the Pairs competitions here.

EDIT: Looked them up during the resurfacing. They do skate together... as Ice Dancers! They were the only competititors in the Adult Bronze Ice Dance at the 2023 New South Wales Championships. And they are competing in the Bronze Ice Dance competitions here on Thursday and Friday.

CaroLiza_fan

Seems I was not wrong after all. The Graysons do skate as a Pairs partnership as well as an Ice Dance partnership. I was looking at the normal Free Skate entries when I wrote that yesterday, and they are not entered in it. Probably wise to drop something, since they are entered in so many competitions here.

That was a really enjoyable programme.

I'm eating now, so I probably won't be commenting for the rest of the Pairs competitions. I just wanted to correct myself.

CaroLiza_fan

I never noticed that! We have an all-British Group 2! :jaw:

I'm impressed. Especially considering how few Pairs partnerships we have had at the elite level in recent years.

CaroLiza_fan

I think we have a whole family competing here.

Skater #2, John DARNTON (GBR), is another skater that we will be seeing again in the Adult Pairs FS tomorrow. His partner is Karen TAYLOR (GBR), who is also competing in the Silver IV + V Ladies FS on Friday.

HOWEVER, yesterday we saw Gillian DARNTON-TAYLOR (GBR) competing in the first of the Bronze I Ladies FS competitions, where she finished in 11th position.

I can only assume that Gillian is Karen and John's daughter.

Anyway, John was skating to "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell. I'm not sure if it is part of his costume or not, but he has a brace on his left wrist.

And the stream died when he was taking his bows.

CaroLiza_fan

I had to come on here and comment about Karen TAYLOR / John DARNTON (GBR)

They were skating to "Master Of The House" from "Les Misérables". And it was absolutely brilliant!!!

Gillian was sitting beside them, and seeing the three of them together, there is no question over whether she is their daughter. You could see both of them in her.

Watching their programmes, I would say that was a fun household to grow up in!

And the celebrations when they went into 2nd position. :cheer:

I have to be honest, I would have had them leading!

We have a new announcer. And boys but she sounds very young!

I wonder if it is one of the skaters we are familiar with that trains at Oberstdorf.

CaroLiza_fan

We stay with the Artistic Free Skates, but move back to Singles skating. And it is another change from the Provisional Schedule. Instead of the Silver I ladies, we have a group of 5 Gold II gentlemen.

Livestream for the Gold II Men's Artistic FS is now on air.

I thought the first skater, Przemyslaw FAJER (POL) got a lot of support from the audience. To the extent that I was wondering if he was an Oberstdorf club member.

But the third, Marcello CAZZANIGA (ITA), got even more!

And I can see why they love him. He was really putting on a show!

Yes, that was a really bad pun. He was skating to "One" from "A Chorus Line".

I'll get my hat...

CaroLiza_fan

Earlier in the week, we had a German lady skating in full Highland dress to bagpipe music.

Wall, we just had another skater representing Germany doing another Scottish programme. (I think he might originally be from Singapore).

But, he didn't quite go the full hog. Although he was in full dress from the waist down, above that he was just wearing a white shirt.

Enjoyable programme.

He goes into 5th position.

Aha! They just swapped them around. The Silver I ladies are starting now. 19 ladies, arranged into two groups of 6; followed by a group of 7.

Unfortunately, my Dad was looking things looked up on the computer, so I wasn't able to comment about the skaters so far. But, I'll try to remember what I wanted to coment in this recap.

Ach, I'm stupid! When Alexandra EDWARDS (GBR) was on at the start, I forgot to have a good look at her, and look to see if Samantha EDWARDS (GBR) was in the crowd, to try to work out if they are related.

After finding out that there are two skaters called Jana PŘIBYLOVÁ (JPN), I am starting to wonder if this Natsumi FURUKAWA (JPN) is the one that was competing against a lot of the current Senior skaters from Japan a decade ago in Nationals. But, I still reckon it could be, because this girl looks a lot younger than 28.

Like earlier, Midori Ito was sitting on the ground.

We got our second Cruella de Vil programme of the week from Agnese D'AMORE (GBR). And boys she went the exctra mile. The right hand side of her hair was black, and the left hand side was a greyish-white. And because her hair was done up in a bun, it looked even stranger.

And then there was a costume change, where a white skirt with black spots appeared. And I have no idea where it came out of! It took me totally by surprise!

Chiara PANIGADA (ITA) was skating to the "Imperial March" from "Star Wars". I suppose you could call her the Dark Lady Of The Sith, but that is not fair. She is a goddess! If Sith women are that sexy, I'm joining up!

I'm not sure if this was supposed to be the case, but Yurika ITO (JPN) looked like a modern-day version of Disney's Snow White, with her blue top and yellow skirt.

Ever since I saw Yurika's name and Midori's name in the entries for last year's event, I have wondered if they are related. Well, when I saw her come out onto the ice, my instant thought was "yes! I can see a likeness". And then when Yurika was getting her scores, Midori was sat beside her (on the sofa, not on the floor!)

Right, that's as much as I can remember.

CaroLiza_fan

Dariya YAKOVENKO (UKR) was really going for the sexy in her programme. I'm amazed the ice didn't melt on her!

She goes into 5th position.
