My criteria is getting goosebumps while watching it. ;) And noone gave me more of those than Kamila Valieva, particularly her Girl on the ball program. Otherwise I agree with liking SP more.

Well, in another thread it turned out that greatness isn't a concept applicable to figure skating anyway. So I'll just share two recent SPs that I found outstanding.

Both programs have a clear theme that is coherent throughout the whole performance. Most importantly, there are no harsh music cuts (why would anyone even use music cuts in a SP 🤨).

Arlet I consider exceptional in terms of artistry among the current senior men. His technical ability hasn't quite caught up with his presentation yet, but imo it doesn't impact the impression of his skating. I would describe his style as modern, maybe even avant-garde.

As to Andrei's SP, for me it is the go-to example of a "great" junior man's program. Technically maxed out without overwhelmig the skater and with a classical image a teenage boy can convey convincingly. It also reminds me of the nice times when not every spin had to end in a senseless illusion or awkward hop.

Arlet Levandi, ISU CS Lombardia Trophy 2023 (unfortunately the stream acted up halfway through the performance)

Andrei Anisimov, Junior Cup of Russia 2020

Patrick Chan's SP to Elegie. The footwork starts in the SILENCE so all you hear is Patrick's blades on ice. Brilliant. So few skaters could make that work. Plus the series of small movements at the very beginning, and all the transitions between elements. Not a moment of music wasted. And you can really focus on Patrick's blades carving into the ice. What a glorious sound! The music allowed his bladework to shine! Kudos to Patrick and Jeff Buttle for this masterpiece!:love::love:

There are many, some of them already mentioned.

What came into my mind:

Yu Na Kim - Danse Macabre (2008/09):

Carolina Kostner - Ne Me Quitte Pas (2017/08):

Michal Brezina - Codo Drums (2011/12):

Evgenia Tarasova & Vladimir Morozov - Piano Concerto No. 2 (2017/18):

thank you ! This is probably my favourite too... i gave the take five because the memories with it are happier :) but seeing this program again, and how you perfectly described it, with these commentators, it was a good moment in my crazy week ! Judges were stingy in PCS... only 9.2 average... :)

These are all amazing. They reinforce my conviction that the path forward for figure skating is to ditch the LP altogether and just go with a well-balanced SP that maintains choreographic cohesion throughout.

Brilliant! It's such a perfect choice of music for Patrick's skating. And such a fantastic piece of music - watching Patrick skate to it inspired me to learn it - thanks, Patrick!

@4everchan - do you know which pianist is playing in this recording?

I don't know who is playing. I have been playing it and teaching it too :) and of course, I am indulging but I sometimes show my kids Patrick's SP to show them fluidity, how he can glide on the ice so smoothly in the Elegy, and relate it to how they should play with flow and lightness, even when the musical phrase gets more intense and the sound ticker.

I was thinking the exact same thing. And even though she falls, I really like their 2017 Worlds FS to Bridge Over Troubled Water. John Legend's voice fills the arena. I don't watch pairs, but I will watch them.
And I  that performance as well, even though I'm not a fan of John legend.

There are so many wonderful short programs. MIchelle Kwan's East of Eden I believe and perhaps stunning masterpiece Oksana Baiul's Swan lake.
