2024-25 British and Irish figure skating

My partner came in as I was watching Phoebe and James, and commented that they seemed a bit slow compared to the top teams.

Mind you he grew up as a hockey skater, and has a particular love of the Taschlers - speed is his thang!

I think the theme suits them well. I reckon all the routines are obviously quite "early season" and will be refined as we go on. There were parts of L&L that seemed a bit disjointed.

Darn. The stream is not showing up on my laptop today, although it did yesterday. It looks promising t first, but stays blank when I click on the start arrow. I wanted to watch the pairs classes.

Does anyone know what Nina Povey is doing? She usually does an August competition of some sort (often qualifier or domestic) and then a September Challenger event. Nebelhorn is the last September challenger this year and she isn't on the entries for that.

Alexa Severn also seems to be missing at the moment.

Saoirse. Well, the first thing to say is this - you would know who she was if you saw her in the line-up at the start of a group. She does fit in with the stereotype that comes to mind when people think of an Irish girl. Here are some photos:

Saoirse's family must originate in County Tipperary, as that is where she represents in the Irish Championships. But she came up through the British system, representing the Nottingham club. And she still trains there, under Margaret O'Neill (Sam McAllister's Mum). Here they are at this year's Nationals:

The thing that struck me about that photo when I first saw it back in June is that it shows just how tall Saoirse has got! She has really shot up in the past year. And you can see this even more clearly in these photos from February:

Unfortunately, I can't find any videos of Saoirse on YouTube. But, that will change soon.

You know, I'm looking forward to seeing her make her Junior GP debut. Not least because of something I wrote during the 2023 Tayside Trophy:

I see that Saoirse O'Sullivan (IRL) is entered in both the SP and FS at National 7 (i.e. Junior) level. So, it mightn't be long until Ted has to deal with her name on the Junior GP circuit!

Still looking forward to hearing what Ted comes out with. But, I'm sure Mark will have coached him, which will spoil the fun.

Are you sure that there are still two more qualifiers she can compete at? All that's listed on the BIS website is a singles/pairs qualifier in October and an ice dance one in early November.

You're right - the September qualifier I'd seen turns out to be a different sort of event.

I haven't seen Nina skating, (only teaching), but that could be because the elite skaters mostly train on patch ice on the other rink, and I practise at the public sessions (I'm nowhere near good enough to be eligible for patch ice!) Hopefully, she'll be at the October qualifier.

Both Nina and Alexa were at the performance camp according to instagram, so I'm assuming that means they are planning to compete at some point this season! @theicecapture was filming with all of them so looking forward to seeing what they are making.

Maybe Alexa will fill our remaining JGP spot. She hasn't been named as a substitute for any of them so far, which was making me wonder whether she was injured or something. Perhaps she was focussing on school after Worlds and started preparing for this season later.

I had a feeling it was you, but couldn't be bothered to re-read the whole thread to check!

Yes, it looks like Ashlie and Atl are doing the final two events. I assume they must have wanted more preparation time and felt the benefits of that outweighed the drawbacks of competing two weeks in a row and travelling so far in such a short space of time.

We have one spot for men at the final JGP. I suspect that will be between Jedidiah Lincoln, Lucas Fitterer and Lloyd Thomson. Tao already has two spots and the other junior men were a fair way below those three at nationals and the March/August qualifiers. I know they sometimes send our Novice champion if age-eligible for juniors, but Jack Donovan seems to have struggled a bit in the March qualifier and WD from the August one. I'm therefore not sure he's really ready for a JGP.
