Thanks for the info. I hope they won't require the Sportity app for that, and that it will be posted somewhere online as well.
One question that's been on my mind though, as I don't travel to the mountains all that much: is there a risk of bears roaming in Oberstdorf? I mean, it's that time of the year when they scavenge for the last food they can get before disappearing off into their mountain lairs to hibernate... so I wonder if I should take some pepper spray with me just in case? Has anyone ever heard of bear visits in Oberstdorf? I'm afraid of those animals so I have to ask.
The last time a bear was seen in upper Allgäu (not around Oberstdorf) was in may 2023.
Since then there hasn't been a sighting, but authorities suspect that there might be a bear potentially crossing the border to Germany, as one young brown bear was spotted on a wildlife cam in the the state of Vorarlberg in Austria. That was in may 2024 though.
There aren't any known bears currently in Bavaria. The last bear really living in Germany (not just crossing borders) was shot in 1835, then there was one originally from Italy that was shot in 2006 shortly after being spotted in Bavaria.
In 2022 and 2023 there were traces of one (or potentially two) bears found in Upper Bavaria (actually close to where I live), but those came and returned to Tyrol.
In general, you don't need to worry about bears in Bavaria. The only know popultion of bears in the alps lives in Trentino in Italy, which is around 120 km away from german borders (also, in Slovenia).
If you plan to go hiking while staying in Oberstdorf, one thing that you need to look out for way more than bears is the weather. Especially in summer, the weather close to the alps can change drastically in very short time, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forming in hours. Depending on the temperature some might happen in september too, as the weather has been crazy here recently.
That said, I think taking pepper spray with you when going to a foreign country is never wrong. Oberstdorf is very small, but very touristy too. And there are crazy people everywhere.
