2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Bombardier/Mimar's free skate at Souvenir Georges-Ethier (108.62 for the free, 165.17 total):

Much improved from their first competitions, they should get some Challenger assignments.
Why weren’t they assigned to SC is the real question?

of course, sending them to skate canada could have done the job... was there a deadline ??? couldn't skate Canada wait after this event to make that call?
Fiona has amazing throws now

The announcement says that entries by name were due on Friday. In which case they needed to have a better system where they aren't relying on summer results for a new team from the beginning of August.

better monitoring....

i will have to start a "justice for Fiona" thing... because it seems like she could potentially get host spots (remember when she was in singles) but never gets the nod....

Have to wonder what Skate Canada would do if they were to beat Kelly Ann and Lucas at Nationals. Which the way they are improving is possible. They have most of the big tricks down.

I don't think they will mostly because of their twist and SBS jumps. I feel like perhaps they have issues with the triple toe. Their salchow is good but their combo was 2a-1a... Loucas and Kelly Ann have a huge twist and can land 3 loops. Fiona and Ben have improved their lifts very very much but they are still a bit rough compared to Loucas and Kelly Ann. Throws is a toss up... Fiona's throws today were top notch... but she also can have big falls on them.

Phew! Kara just made it

David - 2nd event; we’ll earned
John Kim - 2 events; really?
I was hoping they would give Parker an event instead.
Or David Li, he placed higher than John Kim both times at NextGen and at Cranberry Cup. I was hoping he'd get one JGP this year.

One thing I will say, assignments to countries where the visa process is very arduous (e.g. China) are given at an earlier time than assignments where Canadians don't need a visa (e.g. most of Europe). Looking at the American example, that is why I think Patrick Blackwell was assigned JGP China and not Slovenia as Jacob Sanchez would not have had enough time to be confirmed for JGP China right after winning JGP Turkey. That's why the American JGP Slovenia spot was left up for grabs last and not JGP China. With that info in mind, I think John Kim was already assigned JGP China before he competed in JGP Turkey. And after Turkey, it may have been too late for Skate Canada to change it to someone else.
Looking at the list again, Terry Yu Tao Jin is not on it. So he will not be competing this season it looks like. If Nationals was his last competition, he ended it on a good one.
Terry is now in university, judging from his IG. So he ended his skating career on a very high note
welcome to the club of confused about Skate Canada fans... we are quite a few by now :) thanks for your input. Saves me another post :)
Just discovered this forum, and yeah, I think Skate Canada is one of the most confusing federations. I can never accurately predict a significant portion of their decisions. It was pretty intriguing reading all of your speculations from August and September and seeing how it shaped out.

speculations based on a few years of being confused about what they do and no longer ever expecting that they will do what I would believe would be the right thing LOL... sometimes, they throw us a candy to shut us up LOL

They throw us candy?! I'll take it, especially just in time for spooky season 🎃

Is there supposed to be sound? I don't seem to be able to get any.

I heard sound, perhaps you had it muted?
So glad to have seen this. Their progress is quite remarkable.
It wasn't muted - I'd already checked that. For some reason my computer had randomly changed from connecting to its own speakers to trying to connect to some non-existent headphones.

Or David Li, he placed higher than John Kim both times at NextGen and at Cranberry Cup. I was hoping he'd get one JGP this year.
David Li really bombed his other Summer events, though. Particularly in the free programmes. He seems to have almost completely lost his jumps. Hopefully he'll get sent to a couple of other international events once he's re-found some form. In his current form, I don't think a JGP event would have been a very good experience for him.

With the Junior Men this season, the standard to get a JGP assignment has also risen. The only skater not attempting a 3A who got an assignment was William Chan (I'm counting Anthony's pops as attempts.) Last season David Li had the highest international scores prior to Nationals of the Junior Men, but the other men are catching up or passing his scores.

It is nice to see the improved performances from the men this season on the JGP. And that Skate Canada is giving Junior B assignments so that there are opportunities for skaters who don't get a JGP. I think David Li will get a Junior B, hopefully David Howes too 🤞

Yes, she'll need to do Sectionals and Challenge to get to Nationals. She met the minimum TES for Challenge in August and she should easily qualify for Challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing her come to Winnipeg (hi :) )

She'll be competing this weekend at Souvenir Georges-Ethier too.
HI!! haha. I will all likelyhood be at challenge in some capacity. Last year I took my daycare there because Friday of the event was no school. We were on the skate mb and Canada social media pages haha

More Manitoba skating news:

“I’m very lucky to have received this assignment. I’m super excited. It’s extra motivation to keep training hard and keep pushing though,” said Brezden, who hasn’t travelled extensively in Europe and never to France.

They also mention David Howes:
Fellow Manitoban Davey Howes, 17, a junior men’s competitor, should also be back home for the competition at Seven Oaks Arena. Now training in Richmond, B.C., the Winnipegger was Canada’s 2023 novice champion. He finished just off the podium in fourth last season in his first run at the junior title.

And Kemp/Elizarov as well:
Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s junior pair skaters Ava Kemp, 16, and Yoni Elizarov, 20, who relocated to Toronto last year, were absent from Skate Canada’s junior camp in July due to an undisclosed injury and subsequently withdrew from their two Grand Prix events in Europe this month. The couple, who won silver at the prestigious Junior Grand Prix Final and ranked sixth at the world juniors last season, declined to provide any information about the injury or their future competition plans.

I'd suspected injury with Kemp and Elizarov. :( Given that they both competed in singles early in the Summer, it seems most likely that it is either and injury affecting lifts or a shoulder/arm injury affecting death spirals. Whichever of them is injured would not have been able to do the singles competition if it was an ankle injury or stress fracture because those would have affected jumps. I hope that whichever of them is injured heals well and that we see them back soon.

They did compete their Pairs short program at the same event (video is here), so whatever the injury is it wasn't affecting them then. November would probably be the earliest they'd be back, either Junior B or Ontario sectionals.

Ah. I somehow only remembered them doing the singles events. Hopefully we will see them back soon. :)

Is there any update on Kent/Laurent and their whereabouts?
