Ilia Malinin

an ISU clip of IM's sp:

Honestly, when I first saw the free skate protocols, I thought "Wow, that must have been disastrous," but when I actually watched the skate and compared to the rest of the field, I was like, "OK, that was actually pretty epic," and he just felt like the clear winner despite the score.

I liked the interview he gave with Russian media after GPF:
— After the performance, when you saw the score breakdown, what were your first feelings?
— I was a little surprised because some of them were a little strict and tough. But they are judges and you just have to accept it. Such a decision pushes you to improve the quality, to work so that there is no possibility of lowering the marks for this next time. As I said, this was a kind of test program to see what I needed to improve and how much, including in terms of endurance. I need to work on this to have a successful program. Of course I was nervous before trying it in competition, but now that it's over I've really learned a lot. And when I come back I'll work on a few things to make it easier for me.

...
— Do you feel that figure skating is gaining popularity, including thanks to you?
— I think figure skating is growing in popularity in general, and I’m happy about that. My goal as a skater, like the other guys, is to try to make a contribution. Adam did a somersault last year, Mikhail Shaidorov did a combo this year. It’s motivation for everyone, it allows them to enjoy the sport. Plus, moments like these bring out their uniqueness, and that again brings more attention to figure skating.

Very mature answers.

Hi, I’m a huge Ilia fan and I’m new to the forum! I first watched Ilia at the 2022 World Championship and I was impressed by this talented kid. So then I watched his performance at Junior worlds 2022 and was so happy for him to win gold! Before that I had only watched figure skating at the olympics, but I was so intrigued by Ilia and his ambitions that I had to keep watching! I have watched all his performances since.

Ilia’s performances are so exciting to watch. I never know what jumps to expect and I am so impressed by his effortless athleticism. But I also am impressed by what an incredible performer and artist he has become! I love how he tells a story with his skating. I love how he is creating his own unique style and isn’t afraid to try new things. He also seems like such a friendly, humble, and kind person. I love that he draws inspiration from Shoma, my other favorite skater.
I hope Ilia accomplishes all his dreams and continues to amaze us with his brilliant performances.

Welcome to Golden Skate Ilia4A! As we say here, post early and post often!

Also I wanted to say a late congratulations to Ilia on winning his second Grand Prix final gold! Attempting 7 quads in the free skate is exactly the sort of fun craziness that makes being an Ilia fan so exciting 🤩. I really hope he does 7 quads again, but I can totally understand if he does fewer at worlds.

Welcome aboard @Ilia4A !!
I agree with you, Ilia is such an impressive skater. I've never seen anyone skating as smoothly and easily as he does!
I know that many are very mad at Ilia, they say he isn't doing any good for skating and they often critisize him a lot, saying he lacks of choreo components, I heard a lot of that in the media world. But they're simply jelouse and feel a little envy;). The real, true fact is that he's already changed figure skating for the best and he's the uniquest skater ever:love:! I love him!!

Also Ilia has his own unique style of artistry. His EX to “Hope” shows it. I remember seeing it in person and almost crying from watching it. That powerful.

Yes I’ve seen all the criticism of Ilia and I’m quite tired of it. It’s ok if people have different preferences for different skating styles, but that’s no reason to hate on a skater. When I was watching the Grand Prix final on YouTube, Mark & Ted were saying that a lot of the fans there wanted to take pictures of Ilia, and that Ilia was getting the biggest crowd reaction. It made me happy to know that so many fans appreciate his skating:)

I love “Hope”! It must have been amazing watching it in person. I almost felt like crying when I first saw it at Worlds (watching on YouTube, not in person unfortunately). It’s so moving and I love how it includes his philosophy about being a skater.

I love Ilia skating too. I am so tired of the vitriol that has thrown at him since 2022. All the poor kid said that he thought he should have gone to the Olympics that when all of this started.I saw those Nationals and after watching them I agreed with him. I would sent him in heartbeat, he won Silver for God sake why not send him. Even if he had problems it would given him so much valuable experience to be on Olympic ice with all the greats and he would learned so much by being there. Worlds may gone better with that experience under his belt.

Ilia is once in generation talent who could change this sport in ways that we can not imagine yet. America has not really met Ilia yet but once they do I think they are going to love him. He is very sweet and charming and great sense of humor and willing to try anything, just this week he was trying pairs lifts , he was the one being lifted by Danny O'Shea and had a grin his face while he was up there, that who Ilia is not the braggart that many fans associate him with because of his Instagram handle that he picked at 15 years old and his agent Ari comments which I believe do not reflect Ilia's opinions on the same issues. Yes he said stupid things who hadn't and he almost apologized immediately for it and people were angry about how he worded it.

The people know him best the other skaters for the most part like him and have no problem with being around him.I mean you see shows in Asia, Japan mainly, where he playing around with other skaters and having a good time with sometimes hilarious results. Imagine him with stick and playing air guitar with at one of these shows.

The biggest thing that I notice about Ilia. Is how he relates that skating in general. He looks at skating as his joy and there nothing that he rather be doing right now in life. He truly loves this sport. Heck at competitions he stands there and watches the other skaters mostly because he enjoys watching skating period no matter who is on the ice.

I honestly think that Ilia is one of the most misunderstood people I have ever seen. NBC seems to be frightened of him and their avoidance of him is starting grate at this point. Last season when he became World Champion you are think that NBC would want him on the Today show that Monda afterwards, no his interview was on ABC of all places. It is getting obvious at this point. Amber Glenn wins GPF gets interview and Ilia gets barely mentioned that he won too.it affecting the entire promotion of the Winter Olympics in 2026, which basically been non existent up to this point and figure skating being of the main draws this avoidance of him could cost them dearly because people need a reason to watch and as lovely as the US Ladies are I do not think them alone are going to bring the huge numbers that Ilia might and I really think that just Ilia might reach a group of kids that are direly needed and that is young boys because Nathan never really connected with them I think Ilia just might. So I want NBC to give him.the coverage and credit he deserves for once and let's see what may come of that.

GMA also has a huge audience, possibly even larger than The Today Show. His post-Worlds GMA interview has 150K+ views, quite a lot more than Amber's interviews. You could argue that Amber/US ladies' figure skating actually needs publicity more than Ilia right now too. Ilia already made his own name/media coverage over the last 1-2 years with the quad axel and his titles, and at this point, he just needs to keep going and keep it up.

One could also say that Ilia even reached a major demographic of America a few days ago that the Today Show and NBC will never reach. He inadvertently became the face of white culture on a viral, MAGA Trumpster twitter thread. 😬 I was appalled yet also shocked that Ilia somehow made it to this audience, and the post exposed millions of people to an auto-playing video of his Running SP.

Anyway...

Who knew Ilia had such a beautiful layback spin? I'm genuinely impressed with his positions and arm movements. Petition to include it in next year's Olympics programs!

Incase our newcomers haven't seen this GS link from post GPF men's comments, they might find it interesting.

That is not helping any though it is funny that him of all people would be popular with the MAGA crowd. He is child of immigrants, in sport that almost all of them think only LGBT+ men are interested in, wants everyone to love him no matter who they are, and has friends that are from around around the globe. That is antithesis of what MAGA is. They will find this out and attack him soon enough. Ilia's agent Ari needs to stop trying to court Russia and start courting American Companies to sponsor him. If he can not do this find somebody who can. With all of Ilia's diverse interests it should not be too difficult to find companies to do this. Are they going to be the same as Nathan were. No, but that should be OK because he is different. His endorsements will probably be skewed towards companies like gaming, music, and technology instead of more traditional companies. Though I think there is one area that he and corporate America overlap a bit. That is that he likes to eat chocolate before preforming and that could tempt a major chocolate manufacturer like Hershey's to use him in advertisements for their chocolate it certainly would hit some of the demographics that these companies because skating is watched by large amounts of women who also are the largest buyers of chocolate so it is a win win for all that involved. Ilia gets some money so he cut down on the huge amount of ice shows he is doing and the company get a boost in amount of product they sell so they everyone benefits from this. Maybe Ari could go that direction instead of courting Russia all the time. Ilia is an American and with little of good marketing he could be the American Golden Boy of the 2026 Olympics.
