Finland will host 2027 Worlds (Provisional)

This looks like a great choice! I was enjoying looking at Tampere online. For those of us coming from overseas, is Helsinki the closest airport? If so, is there then a train or some other form of transportation to Tampere?

Helsinki is the closest airport. From there you need to take a local train to Tikkurila station, about 10 minutes, and from Tikkurila a train to Tampere 1h30min - 2h. Very easy and inexpensive. Tampere is a great host for the Worlds!

Adding that there is an airport in Tampere too and also some direct flight connections too but I believe only from Europe.

Kind of a strange choice given the ISU's mission of growing the sport. Small remote city far from a major airport, probably a lack of accommodation to handle such an event, possible visa issues for some skaters (the Israeli skater only received her visa 4 days before the competition and her coach couldn't get one for Boston that is completely unacceptable we can't have a repeat of this).

It's more befitting a Challenger event or Europeans but again there are probably more suitable cities for a large event like Europeans. Just doesn't have the grandeur and doesn't tick any boxes like close to major population centres, easily accessible, adequate supply of accommodation, liberal visa issuance.

I'm sure it is a nice town though.

The Arena is biggest in Finland at the moment, they have hosted twice Ice hockey Worlds, Tampere hosted also some years ago U20 worlds in track and speed, has had world class artists either at the Arena or the Ratina Station etc. It is easy to access as the arena is next to Railway station and several hotels less than 1 km from the Arena. Accommondation maybe an issue, not because there weren't hotels but because there is all the time happening something and more hotels are needed. 2023 Tampere has had 3900 hotel rooms in 33 hotels+airnbns+Forenom aparments (at least one more is now, it will have it's opening days this in May but it is a small one build to old factory.

Tampere has Tampere-Pirkkala Airport and there are direct flights from Europe. Via Riga it is possible to go also outside of Europe and from Riga there is a direct flight. I asked my son who travels sometimes abrodad and lives in Tampere, he prefers to go abroad via Helsinki, but he said there is Airport bus from Helsinki Airport to Tampere, costs something but less than train. Well this is early, there will be still Prague before.

Helsinki could not have guaranteed a workable, large arena for 2027. Tampere is the smallest city for WCh for quite some time I believe, but not particularly remote unless one considers entire Finland remote (which, to be fair, one can). And as noted, site of the arena itself is excellent. It also sets new record for northernmost latitude for figure skating World Championships.

Other candidates were:
Beijing CHN
Dortmund GER
Budapest HUN
Kaunas LTU

Dortmund and Kaunas are also bidding 2028 Worlds, and Kaunas is bidding 2028 Euros.

Many people here in Finland I have talked to think in Tampere local hockey game - Tampere has two top hockey teams i national level - is bigger and better known event than FS worlds. Ice hockey worlds for sure is bigger event here if we look amount of audience. Last time 2017 in Helsinki I think nothing was sold out and 50 % of audience were Japanese and most of them because of Yuzury. I could not stay there until Saturday but on weekdays there were plenty of empty seats and I bought one ticket to ID at last minute. To be honest I think the bigger issue is how to get enough audience instead of they could not handle the amount of audience. The Euros was not arranged there because the fed said there will not be enough audience and that is because it was arranged in smaller arena. Synchro worlds was outsold in two hours, but it is because only Finland has 200 Synchro teams at different skill and age levels. I think quite many ticket buyers were competitor's relatives and friends and other skaters and their family members. Of course others too, but it is natural other skaters with families are interested in to go.

But does world provisional GS stuff has included on the title, that the situation may change and will be still another fed?

I don´t know what that "provisional" means either but let´s now pretend it is Tampere. Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Finland. I guess those two teams from Tampere have lots of supporters so probably their matches would beat Worlds for many disciplines, not only figure skating. At least they will not have home matches during the Worlds.

I think the arena was very crowded at Worlds 2017. Lots of Yuzuru fans from all over the world. I remember there were more spectators than the Fed expected and the profit was at least 2,5 million euros. It will be more difficult to fill the arena in Tampere but there is always hope. Ticket prices will be crucial especially for Tampere residents who are not figure skating fans already. I would love to see Kiira Korpi marketing the event as Tampere is her hometown.

I checked the ISU announcement and optional is there. Maybe Finland has taken an option to move to Helsinki, if they get Helsinki Areena (Harwall Areena before) in use. But it is sure that Areena needs big renovation anyway as it has been out of use for some years and as it is almost 30 years old it is also oldfashioned compared to Nokia Areena. Another reason to that world maybe that fed must prove there is enough acocmmondation for visitors.

I think it is easy place to some coming from some towns here without needing stay overnight so maybe there will be people who do not want to go to Helsinki but will go to Tampere.

Yes, 2017 Friday and Saturday were crowded - I was there on Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday. I do not remember which day the RD was, but then there was plenty of empty seats and I bought mine at last minute because there was some cheap seats available. Finland did not have top RD pair, we had one but they did not make it to FS. I hope T/V will continue until this.

I was told by the Fed that "provisional" means the contract with ISU is not yet fully finalized. So some details are still open. I was of course not told which ones.

If somebody wants to get some hint of the transport connections between Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and Tampere at this very early stage, I insert links to current options for a random day in June. Tampere is definitely not remote and there are 260 000 inhabitants in the city area. Surrounding areas included the number of inhabitants is over 400 000. Montpellier is not much bigger I think.

The earlier you purchase a train ticket the cheaper you get it. At its cheapest, one way ticket costs now less than 10 euros.
https://www.vr.fi/en Very many options in a day.

The airport bus from Helsinki-Vantaa airport currently costs around 21 euros permanently. There are 10 bus shifts a day at the moment.

Edit: the links did not work as I wished. You need to do the search yourself to see the options.
