Olympians who won the LP but missed the gold medal

Most recently there was Alexandra Trusova winning the long program in 2022, losing overall to Anna Shcherbakova.

I n 2018, it happened in three of the four disciplines: Chen won the LP, lost to Hanyu overall. Medvedeva won the LP, lost to Zagitova overall. Papadokis and Cizeron won the free dance, lost to Virtue and Moir overall.

Back in the days of compulsory figures, this happened a lot. In 1988 Elizabeth Manley won the LP, lost to Katarina Witt on figures. In 1984 Brian Orser won both the SP and the LP, lost on figures to Scott Hamilton. In 1972 Janet Lynn was 1st in free skating, with Karen Magnussen 2nd and Beatrix Schuba 7th. Schuba won the gold medal -- and that was the beginning of the end of the school figures segment.

I'm thinking of Robin Cousins who actually got the Olympic gold medal after losing out in Worlds several times because of the compulsory figures. Sorry @Mathman, I couldn't think of one.

I don't think so. Small medals are an ISU thing, but Olympic medals are governed by the rules of the IOC. The ISU would have to declare (and get approval from the IOC) that Short Program and Long Program are two separate events (like Butterfly and Breaststroke in swimming, or different apparatuses in gymnastics.)

It is kind of weird that separate medals are given out for every distance in track and field, while there is only one for the entirety of decathlon.

That outcome always seemed something like a lifetime achievement award for Shen and Zhou. Everyone was hoping that they would finally be able to put the cherry on top of their unparalleled career.

I still remember how much I hoped Nathan would come back after that bad SP...I was so proud of him for coming back like that! Heck, the men's event in general that year was incredible to watch! So incredible that I decided to go see the Grand Prix Final during the post-Olympic season, and thus a skating fangirl was born...

Heck, the men's event in general that year was incredible to watch!

Add in the team stuff and you did have a very satisfying event for followers of the elitest of elite men - Nathan had that redemption skate and olympic record, Patrick got his (team) gold, Javi got his longed for podium place and of course Yuzuru came back from injury, cemented the legend and made history.

What @Mathman asks about is must be very very rare especially under current rules and judging.

It’s rare in Olympics because Olympics are rare but in gp events it’s the most common thing in the world! Lol you see it all the time

But Yuzu did it when it really counted. Which is part of why he is still the megastar and is labelled the GOAT all the time. But none of which has much to do with what @Mathman asked in the first place.

And @Mathman I had a thought... Medvedeva actually didn't win the free in 2018, did she? She and Zagitova got exactly the same score (now that's a freaky coincidence) and Zagitova took gold because she eas awarded just a fraction more in the short.

In many ways they lucked out s/s had such a bad season! That was a major sudden decline.
