Andrew Torgashev

Even at Cranberry and Nebelhorn he scored more than 15 points higher than at Worlds. It's interesting now to rewatch Cranberry and Nebelhorn and notice how Andrew's Scheherazade grew from the Challengers to the GPs and Nationals. Nationals was certainly its pinnacle. I'm so thrilled we got to see it skated like that. Andrew was also so happy at NHK, and he got a medal in France. What a season.
I love the Scheherazade music and Andrew skated so well to it at Nationals and NHK, but it seemed restrained by comparison to some of his other programs. Hopefully the choreography next season allows a bit more emotion and building to the end.

What happened to so many of Andrew's files in Dropbox? It says they were deleted.
The short answer is I was in the process of redoing the videos, and when I put the "new" videos on Dropbox, they got new links. I then deleted the old ones. Today I came to this thread to update the links for Andrew's 2024/2025 season. Check the original posts again for the new links.

Longer answer: You may have noticed that most media players didn't play the old videos properly if you downloaded them. It wasn't your fault; they didn't behave properly for me either. It had something to do with the way the clips were created and then exported (I don't know what). I very recently discovered a different way to create and export them, by tweaking my process only slightly. Lo and behold, with the new process, they play properly in all the media players I've tried. So, now you can download and play them normally! I've redone all of Andrew's videos for the 2024/2025 season thus far. Previous seasons will be fixed (and posts edited accordingly) in the next few days. I even have a few videos that I've never brought to this thread yet. I hope you won't judge me for not sharing them "on time." ;)

NOTE: Whenever my original posts were quoted in posts by others at that time, those quotes will still have the obsolete links. Always go to my actual posts for the correct links.

Many thanks for posting. I watch the SP from 2025 Nats every weekend.

Thanks for all of your work in making the videos available for us to see! I have enjoyed the ones I saw and look forward to seeing more. Based on his IG posts, it looks as if Andrew is trying to up his tech content (adding the 4S would be a big help to him). I don't know if he has posted anything about music for the new programs. I may get a bit of a preview at the Ice Dreams show in a few days! :)

You are going to Ice Dreams? How cool! I know we will hear a full report :)

Andrew has been posting more skating on his IG, including attempts at the 4S. I just hope that it doesn't interfere with what makes Andrew special. He doesn't need another jump, IMHO and watching through my biased lens, he just needs to skate clean. You can't teach what makes his skating compelling.

Yes, I am looking forward to the show and will report about it! You may be right, Andrew has some unique qualities that many other skaters lack. I would hate for him to put too much emphasis on the big jumps and risk not skating clean or, even worse, getting injured again.

Agree with the above. I think Andrew needs to concentrate on skating clean programs with the jumps he already has. Jason has proven you don't need those damnable (is that a word?) quads to succeed. Andrew is special to watch and I hope he doesn't muck it up.

Do you all think that Andrew may be hearing from Rafe and others that his best chance of making the Olympic team is to add more quads? He won't catch Ilia or the other top jumpers at this stage, so I agree about concentrating on what he does best.

I don't see him adding the 4S as necessarily a problem (yet). He landed a 4S at 2023 Lombardia but never attempted one again, going back to the 4T. If he changes his layout and it's not consistent, then it's a problem. He may just be exploring options and challenging himself. I won't pretend to know what feedback he is getting and/or internalizing. I would be more mystified if he started doing the 4F, 4Lo, or 4Lz. (I want Yuma to go back to Toe and Sal only, personally).

I am encouraged that Andrew feels good enough about his skating journey to share more about it. He seems to be in an upbeat, positive mood.

Until we see the programs and layout, there's not much more to say. Except, please don't get injured, Andrew.

I don't know if he is being encouraged from the outside to add another jump, but selfishly I hope not. On one hand, I understand: that's where the points are. On the other hand, none of the men not named Ilia are competing for an Olympic spot based on the strength of their many jumps.:scratch2: When they do well, it is because they skated clean, when they do not, they weren't.

If the jump gives Andrew confidence, I guess I am all for it. :) and to see his social media in a rink rather than the Panthers and the beach or the mountains or whatever, is a welcome change.

I asked about Rafe because he is seen as a jump specialist who focuses less on the "in between" stuff. It's not a bad idea for Andrew to train the 4S to have another option if needed. He may use whichever quad is working better in his programs.

It is interesting that he is sharing more about skating in his posts. He does appear confident and ready for the season. Given the tough road and setbacks he has faced before, I have to believe that he knows what is at stake and isn't going to jeopardize his chances if at all possible.

Let's go down memory lane to 2024 Nationals. I have the Peacock commentary with Adam Rippon and Ashley Wagner. For the SP, I chuckle at Ashley saying "some programs you have to sit back and let them skate," when neither she nor Adam had done that, Adam's justification being "we didn't always give [silence] to him because we want to sing his praises."

Tara and Johnny could not say enough good things about L'Enfer, especially the step sequence. In fact, the NBC replay of his 2024 Nationals SP showed his 3A and then most of the StSeq while Tara gushed. Terry spoke first after the program, declaring, "Here's a technical observation. That was really cool." T&J would have given the StSeq a perfect score and said you could "feel the confidence oozing out of his blades." Both sets of commentators noticed how long he held the ending position. T&J always compliment Andrew on the way he pushes across the ice fully with his knees and ankles and digs down into the ice for speed. (I took notes on T&J at the time, if anyone wonders how I know this much detail).

As far as the LP, all the commentators liked it, but the jumps were rough. This is the program where he did a 3Lz+2A with no speed in between whatsoever. I appreciate what Ashley said about that both as it happened and during the replay.

Less than a week later, Andrew was back on competition ice at 2024 4CC. He skated two clean programs there, finishing 8th. Chris calls jumps but is silent while Andrew skates and full of praise afterward. T&J were by themselves for the 2024 4CC broadcasts and expressed strong opinions. Glowing comments about the SP, of course, saying it is rare to have the StSeq be the "statement" of the program. After his 4CC SP, Tara said, "I demand he keep this [program] forever. It is so much fun to watch the push and pull of the chorreography." (Turns out, he did keep it for another season!) In the LP, Johnny described his SS like this: "He's got such glorious knees, really rises and falls and pushes through his ankle into the ice. There's so many high and lows because of how dynamic his knees are, which really lends itself to beautiful skating skills." Johnny also harped on his lack of jump difficulty way too much for my taste. I expressed my annoyance with T&J commentary in another thread at the time, and Andrew's 4CC LP was one of the biggest examples on my mind. I love the fact that with this "not difficult enough" LP, Andrew finished 8th in the competition! I appreciated all the compliments Chris gave him, in a much friendlier in tone (listen for those). No one will ever convince me that the way Andrew skates is not part of "technical difficulty." I understand it's often used as shorthand for "hard jumps," but difficult skating is also technical. Anyway, enjoy the videos!

Fun Notes:
(1) After the SP, Andrew does more than go to the boards; he does footwork to get there!
(2) The SP Warmup shows him doing a lot of his Step Sequence!

Other than the 2025 Nationals LP, the best T&J Andrew commentary of 2024/2025 was his NHK LP. Johnny explained that because Andrew digs deep into the ice and pushes the whole way through his ankle and his foot, it gives him a lot of acceleration and helps his jumps fly into the air. The judge staredown was Johnny's favorite moment of the program. Tara loved his NHK LP reaction and said excitedly, "This is what it's all about!" She said how great it is to see hard work paying off. Johnny said, "I don't think I've ever seen him smile that much in a performance" and called it a "brilliant" free skate. They then spent his whole replay and K&C talking about how Andrew got a UR call on his quad but Daniel Grassl didn't. Both T&J thought Andrew did a clean 4T at NHK. I still wish T&J would talk less, but I don't mind as much when they're being happy and positive.

Andrew skated for a show called Ice Dream in Minnesota on July 18:
It was a good show, each skater (or pairs team) had a brief intro, a longer solo and then participated in the finale at the end. There were also some young "aspiring skaters" and a couple of other skating acts.

Andrew was a pro, very polished and with great speed, flow and ice coverage. The excerpt above is from his solo, which may be his new LP (maybe choreographed by Shae-Lynn?). It looked very innovative and super impressive live, especially as it is in its early stages.

I was at Ice Dreams last week and thought Andrew looked great. That long program is fire and I look forward to him perfecting it.

Very fun to see him and Gracie do simultaneous double axels at the practice (we got there early).
