2025 Cup of China

Chan explained it well in the other thread, but I was still confused because he didn't look like a priest or bishop to me. If I didn't know better I'd have guessed he is some sort of Jedi. Upon closer inspection he is wearing cardinal's attire. The movie is about a dramatic papal election. So, he goes from being a cardinal, to being elected pope.

I see. So he's symbolically taking off the black cardinal attire for the white papal clothing, I get it,. Thanks!!!!

The NBC coverage was far better here than for GP de France. All of the competitions were over (unlike last weekend) and they showed a sampling of programs from all 4 disciplines instead of just a brief recap of pairs and dance. The camerawork was also much better!

Sui/Han don't look ready yet and may be in for a tough fight to repeat their prior success. Madison Chock's skirt looks too bulky and unwieldy to me, but they are trying something different. I wasn't surprised about the women's results, but lots of shake-ups in the men's event as usual!

I love the concept of Madi's costume, but yes, it is too long and makes me nervous.

But I think even the cool kids who don't like Madi and Evan would have to admit one thing: they are smart. They don't stand on ceremony. If it doesn't get the points, or interferes with a skate, they change it.

I bet we see a shorter skirt. :)
what I find uncanny is that the long skirts have happened tons before at IAM (Lolo's for instance)... and it's not like they don't know it will be an issue... yet, they go for it again. How many times does one need to tell a kid not to touch the hot burner before the kid finds out it burns ?

Finally watched the dance final. The skirt is too distracting and is it my eyes or is Maddie's costume black and Evan's is brown? Why? I'm actually very disappointed in them as I've always looked forward to their programs and what she is wearing. This is a big miss for me. And Paint It Black is fast becoming a warhorse. I really expected more in an Olympic year.

Well... I hate to be an old grouch, but I think that ladies figure skating is veering off in the wrong direction. "Figure skating" means gliding and turning on ice. Jumps? When you are in the air you are not skating. Many women's LPs seem to be little more than jump, jump, jump -- an obstacle course rather than a performance.

I enjoyed Ji-a Shin's outing despite the jump mistakes (plus, she had the best music :) ). Of the top finishers, to me only Alysa Lu was able to make the jumps seem like part of the program, rather than a tedious sidebar.

In dance, Zingas & Kolosnik were great
I agree with you regarding ladies skating. It's called figure skating not a jump fest, they spend so much time preparing for the next jump that the beauty of a long spiral,an elegant Ina Bauer is lost. Personally I fault the ISU for their requiring a specific number of movements in programs.

Pairs recap and quotes:

So good to see Sui and Han back on the ice. I've missed them! But they do have some work to do. The Group five Reverse lift will have to looked at as coaches Chris Knierim and Daniel Aggiano, among others, pointed out that it was a Group 4 lift (hand-to-hand press lift).

Really happy for Conti and Macii and the Georgians.

Was so sad for McBeath and Parkman as I love their free skate, but I have faith in them :)

Not much info on Beccari and Guarise's injury; nothing has been mentioned yet about withdrawing from Skate America.

I'm really behind in catching up with this event, but here are my thoughts on the free dance:

I liked Ren/Xing here and think they really have potential. Was not particularly enamoured of Wang/Liu's Batman. I found the music blah.

Lim and Quan continued to be absolute stars. That one foot step sequence was just divine. I don't really care for the vocals in their music, unfortunately. The best part was the instrumental at the beginning. But they sell the hell out of it, so....

Dune II from Smart/Dieck is even better than Dune I, in my opinion. It's baffling how they look like a completely different (and far better) team in this program than they do in the train wreck of a RD. The lifts are spectacular, it's interesting and atmospheric. I'm on board.

Green/Parsons were all costumed up with skates on so they must have only decided at the last minute to pull out.

Demougeot/Le Mercier's free dance is just kind of odd in a way I didn't especially enjoy. I found my attention wandering. I found Lopareva/Brissaud's program generic.

Zingas/Kolesnik: I enjoyed their divine contemporary program from last year more, but for a warhorse this was pretty good. These two bring so much passion and energy to their performances it really makes them stand out. I think they've started making a good case for themselves to be sent to the Olympics.

Chock/Bates: I get trying to present a contrast to Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron. Strategically, it's a good move. This program isn't there yet. I'm not sure it will get there. The choreography was forgettable, including the lifts, which is unusual for this team. I didn't hate the skirt, but found it occasionally obscured some of their positions in a way that wasn't particularly aesthetic. I"m not sure it adds enough to warrant the distraction. I get that this team often starts out slow and looking rough (which they definitely did here), but they have to be worried to score 10 points below FBC in the free, even if it's just the start of the season.

In order of my enjoyment, the programs ranked: Smart/Dieck, Lim/Quan, Zingas/Kolesnik.

I still haven't really caught up but in regards to the Chock/Bates: To paraphrase Dick Button, they're bamboozling us with the skirt. Some very dramatic movements obscuring what else was going on or not going in in the program. Also, what looked like lace panties???

I haven't seen Dune 2 yet, but really liked L/B; theirs is the only dance I've really enjoyed so far. Z/K are good but this didn't give Romeo and Juliet vibes, might be also due to the blah costumes.

I had to leave the men's FS before Grassl skated, but what went before was pretty sad.

C/B’s FD has potential IMO but I am confused about the construction of the program. It’s like they want us to tell a story about a fight between a Matador and a raging bull but I don’t see it on the ice and there is no climax to the program. I don’t know if it’s the music cut but atm it still feels pretty anonymous. The skirt as other said it’s an accident waiting to happen. Not really what you want in an Olympic Season…
L/B’s FD this year does not do them justice. I get the idea of “quirkiness” they have - pair it up with Bjork, the program could have been great, but it’s so generic in terms of choreography and music cuts that it doesn’t get you glued to the screen like their last year’s FD.
Z/K really have great potential and the FD is a great vehicle, though I feel like, to do something out of the box to a warhorse theme like R&J, it feels a bit disconnected.
L/Q as others have said are stars in the making and I hope the judges will soon reward them; they are so elegant to Watch. Hannah is a star.
S/D’s Dune II is IMO less impactful that Dune I. But it still has some great coreographic moments.
I didn’t get to watch much from the other disciplines, but I rewatched Sui/Han’s programs. I am Just happy to see them back in competitions but I feel like if things don’t adjust for Chinese Nationals they might not go to the Olympics to not fight for the gold. They looked slower on the ice; the elegance is still there and Wenjing is a star, but the connection between them atm is not and it’s what really Made them special. It seems like they have not resumed training for long so hopefully in their next showing they’ll look more ready. The calls on the group 5 Lift are jarring.

A few words about ice dance: I watched the FD of the top couples. I actually also wanted to watch Green and Parsons, but they withdrew. :( I liked the free dance of Smart and Dieck. I haven't seen Dune-1, never seen the movie either, but Dune-2 is great. It gave an impression of something happening in a desert, but something phantasy-kind, I guess it is what the movie is about. The first lift is awesome, I've never seen it before, because I don't watch ice dance. :) The choreo is interesting, she is a star, he is nowhere near in star quality. I don't know about his skills, because I mostly watched her. But he is a good showcase in this program. He looks a bit like Jim Kerry, so I always expect some fun from him, but in this program he is more of a background, and he does it well. The costumes and choreo felt comfortable and it felt like a program. I also watched Zingas and Kolesnik's dance, a lot of crooked lines (drama), not much atmosphere or sense. This music requires sharpness. Then I also watched Chock and Bates, and I didn't understand this dance. But having given it a thought, read the lyrics of the song and rewatched, the first half of their dance made sense, the second half lost me. I think it needs development to hold a viewer's attention, but they have time to work it out. Not my favourite dance, and her costume designs are weird. I know it's Madi, but lace undies should have earner negative feedback from the judges if not a deduction. Also, I watched Lopareva with partner, I don't remember what they skated to or the dance, typical story between me and them. All I remember is the color of her hair. She is like a detective story character whom the witnesses never remember except the red scarf. But Loicia and Theo's dance I do remember. To me it felt uncomfortable, I wouldn't want to rewatch it. They are probably good, but that unitard like most of her costumes that I've seen, felt very tight on her, and some of their lifts looked uncomfortable. They were almost too expressive, I just like it a bit more subtle. I tried to watch the rest of FD and dozed through it. So far my favourite FDs are Smart and Dieck's and FB/C.

Men: funny moment for me was thinking during Denis Vassiliev's SP: this is sung by a dead guy, what kind of love is he expecting from a living girl? But then it became a stream of Ghosts, and I stopped minding. Shun did great, but he usually starts minding the music at the last minute of his program, hopefully, this will improve in future seasons. Danny Grassl: question is if he doesn't make the loop will he become a pope? :) Shaidorov and his FP music is a rather obvious combo if you follow Dimash, and totally confusing if you don't. SP is not bad, FP is terrible. Jacob Sanchez has potential PCS-wise but needs a ton of work, which I am afraid is not going to happen. His toe-pick technique seemed optimized even on the Arabian. But Hiwatashi, wow. Training in Japan seems to have stabilized his jumps and he looks confident and much better packaged. At least he is not skating to Norigami. ;)

It's a little sad to see Sui and Han like this, the other Chinese couple don't look resigned at all, except in a season or two the girl might grow. Sui wasn't the strongest jumper to begin with, they are out of shape, lifts looked scary, and she looked nowhere near her usual elegance. Good luck to them matching what they had or reinventing themselves, they don't have much time. A drop of vinegar was Metelkina speaking Russian at the interview. Obviously, she spoke a language she could speak and the Chinese could interpret, but hm... If ISU bans the nation and its flag, why is it OK to use its language as an interview language? Be consistent: ban the language, music and people who take advantage of its facilities and heritage and play make believe they have nothing to do with it. As it is, it doesn't serve well to viewers on either side. Yesterday, there was also SP in Magnitogorsk, I took a look at men and women and there were a some interesting music selections. E.g. unusual cuts from Muse and Ksenia Sinitsina with Andrei Petrov's "Creation of the World" ballet adagio. Whoever chooses her music, I have a lot of respect for the breadth of the their knowledge.

I'm a fan of Rinka Watanabe, I love her fighting spirit with knowing that she need strong skate with triple axel to make the Olympic team and her contain with 3 triple axel program can give her a medal at the Olympic if she skate clean.
I'm exited also about her trying to do the quad salchow early in the season.
I'm rooting for her this season to make the Olympic team, she deserve it, her program are great !

I haven't seen the pairs free skates yet, but I did watch all of the short programs. Sadly, I thought Sui/Han were pretty overscored for they produced in the short, or it may be more accurate to say that they should not have been ahead of several other teams, who skated great, namely the young Chinese national champions, who had incredible elements, but admittedly still need to work on presentation, and the Americans McBeath and Parkman, who skated lights-out. On the plus side, I really like Sui/Han's SP choreography and music, but even barring the technical mistakes, they did not skate here up to their usual artistic standard, in my opinion, and it was pure name recognition that put them in third after the short.

I may have more thoughts after I have time to see the long programs.

I agree with this observation. Waving the brilliant skirt like a matador's cape is sort of like relying on a prop to sell the program.

Since I didn't have a chance to watch this live, I guess i will just go straight to the lounge. We just caught up on men, and I am so, so happy Sato had two great skates and didn't lose stamina by the end of his free. His coach was lovely in the K&C. Hiwatashi's change in coaching looks to be bearing fruit and his FS was really good. I feel that Grassl and Shadorov were in the same basket, but that fall really hurt Shaidorov. It was also a pity that Yamomoto and Cha had a poor outing, 😢. And, of course, we all know how horrible Vasiliejvs' situation is so... hopefully he finds a way through it.
