2025-26 Japanese Pairs and Ice Dance

Ikura and Koshiro have been officially cleared and assigned by JSF to compete at Golden Spin, as reported by media:

Very curious on how the international panel will see them 👀 hoping for them to get the minimums for 4CC at least so we can see them on ISU stream!

I am specifically curious how the international panel will react to their Rhythm Dance music choice:

It could be my favorite short dance music this season (not a busy competition in this field, ha ha). I particularly liked the rhythm change - which I rarely do.
In my eyes, this team is delivering already. So, fingers crossed for them to have a good international debut 🤞

Is there a recording of IkuKo FD, or will we have to wait until Japanese national?

On a related note, I have a faint hope that the technical panel being stricter at Finlandia would means higher scores for Japanese ice dancers because everyone knows they are all very strong in that regards. In reality, things probably will not change much as ice dance seems to be mostly about the show and vibe and connection nowadays.

OOps. I didn't notice the F. Sorry!
Well, it looks nothing like a regular RD this season. Myself, I checked the length several times to make sure that it really was their RD and not FD :ROFLMAO:

I don't know what judges will say about it but I suspect that fans will like it very much

Wow indeed!
IkuKo have done it all upside-down in the upside-down world: they have a RD that should have been a FD and a dreamy waltzy FD that would have made a perfect short dance in older days.
Great choice, love them

Not sure about switching their programs around ;), but don't get me started on how sorely pattern dances are missed and how severely the technical content of RDs has been watered down in recent years. Until four seasons ago there were still partial patterns, at least - now there's basically nothing left. *sigh*

Anyway, the teams are doing their best within the requirements and I applaud IkuKo/Cathy (as well as UtaMasa/Scott/Madison/Adrian) for finding a way to make this season's RD theme work.

And yes, IkuKo's FD is a very good vehicle for them in their first season together, allowing them to display their good lines and extension.

I created an entire thread in the Edge to get you started
But I must admit that IkuKo have done their best to pour some balsam on our wounds with their classic waltz choice :love2:

I am with you here. I love both these acts (I still can't step over that and call this year's RD a dance) and I want them both to be in the Olympic Games. It would be the Team event only but still.

Unfortunately Ikura and Koshiro miss the 4CC and Olympic minimums by 1,5 points. I do think this can be something good for them to be able to have more time to cook and marinate as a team, Koshiro especially needs to work a lot on his dance tech.

4CC have no minimums this year. I think both UtaMasa and IkuKo will go - of course on condition that IkuKo don't finish below another newcomer team/s at Nationals ;)

omg where did you hear about this!? The official 4CC Announcement document from ISU website still states the CTES minimum requirement..

If there's really no minimums JSF should just send all top 3 national finishers  (not gonna happen I know lol)

You're right, the 2732 communication said open entries (you can send 3 teams if you have them) but minimums had yet to be reached... aww.

ETA: There is still Sofia Trophy before 4CC but I'm not sure if it works... It probably doesn't

The CTES minimum must be earned prior to the entry deadline on December 24 — the Sofia Trophy takes place from January 6 to 11 :(:

But the JSF could send them there to try to achieve the CTES anyway, in case a replacement team needs to be sent to the Olympic team event.

When I looked at the list of competitions on the Golden Skate website on Friday, I initially ruled out the Sofia Trophy because the overview states that "the event will feature the Singles (Novice, Junior and Senior) and Ice Dance (Novice and Junior) disciplines" (https://www.goldenskate.com/events/2026-sofia-trophy/).

However, according to the announcement on the official event page, there will be ice dance competitions for juniors and seniors: https://sofia-trophy.clubdenkovastaviski.com/2026/ST2026-Announcement.pdf

On the other hand, we know how stingy JSF is when it comes to international assignments, especially in ice dance (even to the federation's own detriment)... :cautious:
