He leaves when she is, idk, 10-12, and says something like "hey when I get back we may even be the same age" cuz time shenanigans and whatnot. He's going on a mission to find a liveable planet for us humans. She does not want him to go.

They stop on one planet where an hour stayed there equals 7 years on earth and due to a mishap stay the equivalent of like 20 years. During which time he obviously never sent messages back. So the daughter leaves this message kinda like "f u goodbye, plz come back" and he cries.
But they see each other again. Granted, he's still Matthew McConaughey the age he was when he left and she's like 90, but still.

Side note: the ticking in the music symbolizes 1 day on earth passing. It's played during the weird time planet scenes
