2025-26 Russian Challenge

To Petr's credit, I must say that today for the first time, I saw some signs that even him is getting "embarrassed" (for lack of a better word) by all of this. He looked (to me) just uncomfortable when he received the prize for 1st place and he quickly left Anton's side and went away. Kind of recovered though later on, to smile for the other prize presentation and the final lap.

Anyway, there were many enjoyable programs, some of which I will rewatch. Glad Mark and Matvey got something out of this, and S/B and M/G too. I would still have found some prize out there for Sofia S. and Liza (I also liked other programs that got no prizes as far as I followed, but these stood out for me).
I totally forgot about Sofia. S. I think she deserved something for sure. I don't think Petr winning is too embarrassing. He had a great program. I just thought Mark was a clear favourite. I don't think anyone else was obviously better than Petr.

I don't really like when they choose topics that don't give you any choice but to give them a high score. To me, Matvei's program is completely unclear without explanation.

I agree with you on the point about political / sensitive topics. But nevertheless, in this case particular case, I still enjoyed the performance because Matvey skated it very emotionally. You could feel the character's struggle, even if you still had no idea who the character was or why he was struggling 🙂

I don't see that at all. Makar & Sasha were great. Frolova was decent. Sadkova's program was clearly the most structured and coherent.

To be honest, these 3 programs were the most uninteresting ones of the show for me (together probably with Adelina's and maybe another one I'm forgetting about now). And Sasha/Makar's was actually the only one I did in fact fast-forwarded: the pair elements were very, very tentative, and the rest of the skate was very monotonous. The program felt super long to me and I just couldn't make it to the end of it

I think the dance was quite nice. It was appropriately folkish.

I agree, there were indeed some well-done choreographic moments. It's on my rewatch list together with Mark, Matvey, Liza, both Sofias, M/G, Andrey and a couple others.

"Tatar hospitality" she says.

Must remember to put Tatar into my travel wishing list, sounds like the right place to be 😂

I don't think Petr winning is too embarrassing. He had a great program. I just thought Mark was a clear favourite. I don't think anyone else was obviously better than Petr.

Well, it is not downright outrageous, I agree, but it's still not fully deserved. He had a good program, with powerful music and skated with energy. He was good, yes, but was one among the good ones and not the clear best (for me, many other performances were actually better this time, see my rewatch list above for some suggestions 😛). In any other year, and with any other policy/context, he would not have won here. And this is more or less the same that has been going on all season. So, I think the "embarrassment" is not about this victory in itself as an isolated fact, but more about the accumulated results of the "chosen one" policy that was put in place for the sake of the Olympics and that seems to still live on strong afterwards.... and as I said, today it seemed to me that there were some signs that this is getting to Petr himself too.

Actually, the bottom line here is that I do really hope (even a touch more that I hope for Dima's return, which is a lot to say 😊) that this "chosen one" policy gets sent to retirement with the end of this season and does not carry on into the next. Even for Petr's sake. And even more for the sake of Russian Men skating, which I do care about as a whole and it's probably my favourite skating overall. They are already under so many constraints and pressures, the ban, the politics and a large etc, and yet they managed to overcome them and even thrive and improve way beyond where they were. They pulled through one year of this new reality, but I don't think they can hold on if this continues one more year. The situation is way too strained as it is in my opinion. And more so, the consequences of having a chosen-one are clearly visible for anyone to learn from it in international Men skating; here it will only be worse because of the added tensions. Hopefully, RusFed will not be so dumb as to aim for self-destruction; let's see in September 🤞

Thanks a lot for this! It's a very poignant poem. And I'll browse this site more in detail, thanks for sharing.

Btw, it's kind of off-topic here, but I saw this video presenting Team Moscow for the Channel One Cup, and Mark recites a poem about Moscow that I really liked. I tried googling it but, of course, with zero success rate 😁 Would you happen to know which poem it is?

Mark's recitation starts around 0:20

It's his own poem I believe. He references the arena and the skaters' quads.

I wonder what Evgenia's gonna score Alina 🤔
I wonder if they still have beef
Looks like we have our answer!!

From Zagitova's Telegram:

"It seemed that everything is behind us. However, sometimes the past sometimes find a way to remind you of itself. It's ok—I just smile and continue forward"

Obviously, it is in reference to Medvedeva giving her "only" a 9.00 score... I wonder why she's upset at Medvedeva but not at the fans who put her 4th to last place? And, 2 other judges also gave her the same score...

Not a good look!

Really? Because the autotranslate in youtube tells me this: "Where the flock flies, the ice doesn't slow its dream. With the Moscow sun, the hostess melts the Nevsky ice." I got the point it was about Moscow prevailing but missed any direct reference to figure skating / quads, so I didn't think it was something Mark had came up with, but rather a fragment / adaptation of an existing poem. Surprising 🙂
And he does recite it very convincingly in any case 😁

They really thought just b/c they settled on no theme this year, everything would be fine and there wouldn't be any controversy lol
Maxim Trankov basically called out the skating tech panel and how some of them should've been on the ice rather than judging them(imo he's calling out the younger judges). He also called out other skaters for not doing enough and still getting a prize. I'm guessing he thought they deserved to be in top 3 and is upset so he's calling people out.
He's kinda of all over the place with what he said though. Compliments Victoria and Nikita and the Bukins for being "creative" and than shaded M/G for their airline themed program. Obviously Galliamov posted on telegram saying he thinks more exciting and dynamic programs is harder and takes more energy than lyrical programs lol

You were right I found it:

It's from Igor Severyanin - Poems to Moscow

He wrote it when in Estonia reminiscing on Moscow. The idea is that St. P is cold and harsh, while Moscow is warmer and "homier".

I don't know where I thought he mentioned quads.

"Nevsky Ice" is the name of the rink at the Jubilee Arena they skate in. He uses it as a double meaning.

Great investigative work! 👏 Thank you so much! I'm not familiar with the poet or his work, but by his biography in the great site you shared with me, he seems to have had quite a colorful personality and was even awarded the "King of Poets" title in a public contest.

I like that about Mark actually, that he always has an interesting or unusual tidbit thrown in from which you can learn about something new.

So that's the skating reference I'd missed!

It's only "obvious" to folks like you who try to stir trouble. We don't know why Alina said that, she likes to leave cryptic messages occasionally. It might be something personal related or unrelated to this competition It might be referring to the obviously biased format of the show or some other behind the scenes intrigue.

Anyway, the show is openly biased, has been biased since the very beginning. There is a reason the most decorated coaching school had openly decided not to help their skaters with preparation for this annual show.

Ditto for the spectator scores, which I thought was a funny concept given how biased the spectators were expected to be and were in favor to St. Petersburg based skaters. Also Alina's program was based on Tatar music and folklore, and let's just put it mildly a significant fraction of Russians are tacitly and mildly racist (sometimes not so tacitly or mildly). There is a reason Medvedeva changed her last name to the ethnically Russian surname back in the day. Regardless, on youtube Alina's program is third or fourth most watched and liked so far.

Matvei Vetlugin previously used it, too.

Oh yes, I love that program, one of my favorites by Matvey. Great music, some wonderful choreographic moments and a beautiful performance and skating by Matvey. I miss this program, much prefer it to the ones he had this season. Who choreographed it?

Yes mark is very artistically cultured in general.
Indeed. I've probably said it already in this forum but one of the main things why I like and root for Russian Men skating in general, besides the skating itself, is for many of the skaters' personalities. And Mark's does come across as particularly interesting, lively and rich. Will keep a closer eye out for more of this type of tidbits from him in the future 😁
