Ladies Free Skate

I have to say one thing although it's a bit off topic: I find it absolutely annoying that some people use European as a general term for all countries in Europe as if there were no difference.

Can someone please explain to me why a British judge has a reason to hold up a Russian skater and an American judges hasn't???

I cannot answer that question but I think that blaming things on national bias is a bit speculative, stating the fact, like here, that the scores didn't match the skating is not, this leaves people to fill in the blanks for the judge's motivation for the disconnect.

Well since most European countries are now belonging to EU, why can't they just nominate ONE judge to represent them all? haha

They are still separate countries and have separate skating federations and that's what counts.

 Well said.

Sorry, phone calls. Happy to read that Leonova did so well. I had hopes for her after the Euros ;) . Congratulations to the ladies on the podium. Caroline showed a champion's heart; now she needs to take care of her body.

I notice that the top three finishers are all in the 150s, while those finishing immediately below them, are in the 130s. I think that this makes a definitive statement. I also think that Russia has new promise in the Ladies division. Competition is all about the spirit that does not wilt under pressure. Ladies, I salute you

Isn't it obvious? Why are those cheering for Bin Laden mostly from Middle East countries. You'd expect only his country men would be proud of him.

The Russian federation was terribly mean to his girls, some months ago. I read some quotes which were scaring.

Can you elaborate?? I came to think that all of the skating federations around the world have one problem or the other and all I can hope is that they don't savotage their skaters' career.

Looks like another bad skate from an European girl, I hope the scores will reflect that, cough, cough, Kostner.:rock:

Troll on Board ??

I haven't watched any of this, but it looks to me that

when an American/Canadian skater/team is in front, it is because they're superior, the best of the best, no one should dare to be better then them, etc...

when an European (specially Eastern) skater/team is in front, it's because the judgung panel is obviously biased, because those skaters have absolutely nothing of good.

I think the PCS knife cuts both ways...

Again, I didn't watch it, but I'm glad Leonova won, I thought she was a breath of fresh air at Europeans (even with her flaws). Nice for Zhang, the comeback queen today. Too bad for Elene...

I'm soo tired to read all this envious things about kostner and the european ladies...what's up?? only the americans and japanese are allowed to win a medal??? If a skater skate well she/he deserves to win ! no matter f se/he is european, canadian, american, japanese, turkish, italian, african o whatever!! stop looking at the country and start looking at what they did and how they skate!
If you just look at the points caroline won the long by 6 points but she was 10th in the short (not 4th or 5th but 10th!!!with what, 15th points far from the leader?) while leonova was 4th with a very good margin!! so...no scandal over the judgement! instead of saying these envy things, try to be happy for caroline, who did very well and ended up in 2nd after that short!

You are the only person in this world that would compare figure skating to Bin Laden :sheesh:

Ashley fell on a Salchow??? Jeez. I'm so so relieved she still medaled. Though she could have totally won this thing had she skated better. She needs to go home and get a new jump coach pronto. Hill apparently was quite the technical specialist, but it totally does not reflect in Ashley's skating right now. But Hill was able to do wonders for her PCS and spirals.

Edit: that's an okay article by Hersh; consistency, consistency, consistency; that's every skater's homework for Olympic season.

You are correct, but for those who parade around with 'my country has the best figure skaters' is the most annoying fan assumption. Good athletes come from all walks of life.

But there is reason to believe that some judges are afraid of their Federations which insist that they butter up the marks of that Fed's country.

Whether European judges feel that if a Euro skater is a contender, and therefore worth giving higher scores is just speculation nowadays, imo. However as seen in the past, eastern european judges all have similar cultural ties and if enough of them are judging, they may agree with each other.

Nobody is jealous of Kostner except perhaps her European compatriots who desperately want somebody, anybody from that part of the world on the podium.
Kostner is simply a laughing stock in FS history. I certainly don't envy any current European lady's skill sets. Those Finish girls are pretty, but they don't jump...:laugh:

I don't care what country leonova is from.It is the fact that she won on uncharacteristic pcs. If she had similar scoreo to her short progam it would have been about 47 high 5's instead of 50. low 6's. There been a obvious jump in scores with no obvious visual improvement in performance. This has happen to non-european skaters too. But it seems to happen a lot with european ladies, definitly with there is a chance to medal.btw, I think carolina kostner deserve her worlds medals.

But Alena Leonova sure CAN jump! And next year you'll see another Russian girl, Polina Shelepen, she is only 13, but she can jump all triples and all 3-3's, even 3Lz-3R!
