Resounding no, they are not on a level with T&D yet, other than they both are worthy Olympic gold medallists and both skated a very memorable Olympic FD. IMO
For one thing, T&D did the tango romantica a lot better, had to do 3 repetitions of it where the patterns lay over each other as closely as school figures, and still were only 4th in 1980. By the time they did Bolero, they were completely amazing in the CD's. They also had to have 2 other compulsory dances at the same level. Tessa and Scott rightfully finished second to DomShabs who had only 3 good legs between them in the Tango Romantica.
By 1984, T&D had created 3 absolutely legendary OSP's, best of their kind-Summertime blues was reworked into the Midnight Blues compulsory dance. Their 1984 paso doble OSP was so wonderful that I still get hits on it by ballroom dancers who post, Yes, Yes, that is just how a paso doble is supposed to be. In between that, they skated a rock n roll OSP that should be referred to be teams who want to construct a dance of the 50's for next year's OD.
Their has never been any team better at interpreting the character of a dance better than T&D, and Tessa & Scott simply have not yet reached that level yet-if you want to compare them to T&D, it would the 1981 T&D, new minted world champions, skating to the Fame soundtrack for the FD, and Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White for the chacha OSP. They have a great deal of wonderful potential, but haven't reached their full development yet. V&M's previous OD's have been no where near that level, and this year's Flamenco isn't a patch on Anissina & Peizerat's. IMO
If V&M retired from eligible skating today, I'd compare them to K&P--wonderful, balletic technicians, Olympic gold medallists, beautiful instruments in the hands of their choreographer, and skaters who could never win over the hearts of the Duchesnay and Rahkamo & Kokko fans, who found K&P rather boring. Indeed, K&P even lost a world championships to the Duchesnays, and the iconic, memorable FDs of that era are Missing I, Missing II, Reflections, Savage Rites, and only perhaps in fourth place, K&P's Air, tied with the Batty Bride. K&P vanished without even a team that they coached hitting the big time. In OSP's, the only K&P program that remains memorable is their Golden Waltz (CD for worlds), whereas the Duchesnay's had a great Argentine Tango, and Rahkamo & Kokko's Finnstep (to Borsalino) was the best of the 3. IMO
If you want to make a case for Shpilband & Zoueva as legendary coaches & choreographers, up there with Betty Calloway, I'm willing to go there with you.
