2010-2011 Programs by Discipline

Now Nadine you better believe it, because here it comes for you, the shocker of the season thusfar, Brian skating to 9th of Beethoven and closing as he should with Ode for Joy:)

Thanks for that, herios! :)

Brian did a fine job; this said after one viewing mind you, as my first impression is my most honest, or in other words the most visceral. I liked the opening jump with the music, but then the music just seemed to get too loud (might've been my speakers though, lol), and I also I did not enjoy the cuts. The part I liked the most starts at approximately 3:44 seconds into the program, of course the "Ode To Joy!" (:^D

I have to admit though I was a tad disappointed, only because I already have the music & the choreography planned out in my head, and someday when I die I hope to be able to perform it in front of my Creator. Seriously, it's all in my imagination, wherein I inhabit Oksana Baiul's body/face/eyes/limbs/effervescence/joy/et al, O-N-L-Y it will be MY spirit! :) ;) And my spirit will be running across the heavenly ice in a circular footwork pattern during the Ode to Joy; the way Oksana does in her Paquita program (lol, I also hope to begin my program as she did this one at the Gold Championships). As well my program will start out exactly as the music does.....low, subtle, beautifully....gradually increasing in tempo just as the music does, so by the time I end, one cannot tell where the music begins nor me; we will have become fused as ONE. I will be the music!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:biggrin:Full credit to Brian for going with this program . I'm so pleased that it looks like he really has gone back to the drawing board this time.

I love the little flourishes ( not overdone) to the audience that allow him to connect with them (instead of bumping and grinding ). Also nice to see some innovative spin positions, and footwork that's unique to this program when so often in the past his footwork has seemed as though it was just transported from all his previous programs. I'm really looking forward to seeing this with a few more miles on it.

I like both Joubert programs this season so far, especially Lp since I like the music a lot and may i say i liked his Lp costume as well? (Ok I am a good person today:))

I know the feeling, Nadine! The number of times I've sung in my heart with Marilyn Horne's voice....

I'll look at the program and will hope for the best. It's certainly ambitious to skate to symphonic music, because a symphony is conceived on such a grand scale, and a five-minute distillation is well-nigh impossible, but then look at the Mahler Adagietto from his fifth symphony and how Virtue/Moir skated it, and better still, how Gordeyeva skated it as her husband's memorial piece.

I think the costume was just temporary. he has worn that one before for the Kurt Browning SP.

I agree! I noticed the spin positions and the program really shows off his considerable ice presence without resorting to gimmicks. I think it can only get better as the season progresses. I wasn't completely wowed by the Ode de Joy footwork but it's a lot to live up to. In particular, I think it could use some more thoughtful choreo when the first, soft strains of Ode de Joy start. But overall, I enjoyed it. And kudos for him for daring to do this.

I just watched Brian's SP and LP. WOW. This is a renewed and rejuvenated Joubert. Both programs are beautifully choreographed and fit him
like a glove. I am impressed. What a battle it is going to be for the podium in the men's field come Worlds.

I love Brian's SP, it's perfect for him! :) I even like his outfit, lol. (:^) When skated cleanly, with his powerful jumps, including the quad, I see him being in the lead. At the very top! The only thing I think will give him a bit of trouble is his LP. I'd like to see him really work on the choreography, put his heart & soul into it, and really sell it. Take it one thing at a time, maybe even tinker with the cuts & choreography here & there. In the meantime I'm having a blast watching it on youtube because I love the music, and am excited that a skater is finally skating to this magnificent piece!!!!! *cheers & clapping*

Has Mirai changed her LP? Her website has "Memoirs of a Geisha" as the LP music.

Sorry, I should have specified: remember when she tweeted that most of her SP is Liszt? That's what I'm talking about; her SP is "witches" combined with un sospiro

Sorry for going on & on about Brian and his LP, but the more I view his program the more suggestions I have. :) First off, I would suggest an outfit that matches the music ~ refined, classical, subtle, beautiful ~ the costume should not overpower the music, only accent it. Therefore his Las Vegas costume with the sparkles, gloves, and extraneous fabric hanging from the cuffs has to go, rather this one would be perfect, something similar to Sergei Grinkov's: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h3HborB6L...6cuw_qR-A/s400/gordeeva_grinkov+composite.jpg (lol, it doesn't hurt that Brian actually looks like him as well, with his thick dark brown hair & boyish dimpled smile: http://www.gala.fr/var/gal/storage/...t/411968-1-fre-FR/brian_joubert_reference.jpg)

Now comes the choreography; I don't like the music beginning with a bang, it should build up slowly/gradually/hypnotically to the JOY (like the way T&D did with Bolero:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2zbbN4OL98)! Start out similar to Takahiko Kozuka and end like Daisuke Takahashi, of course not literally, just for comparison's sake, as these two define for me personally the beginning and the end of Beethoven's 9th! But I want Brian to make it all his own, so I'm not thinking about anybody else but h-i-m when I see him skate to this masterpiece. Take his time, stretch out each move to the very end of his fingertips, let people appreciate & savor each and every movement on ice, don't throw them away, and don't rush the performance when it's not necessary, breathe, feel the power of the music, think about the joy, FEEL it, let it overtake you, Brian, you are now just the conduit, ahhhh.

That said, the more I view the barebones of this program, the more I can see what it will eventually look like after a face lift. And after Brian has skated it at least a dozen times in competition, clean and with purpose, so by the time Worlds comes round it will look completely different than it did at the beginning of the season. For now, I enjoy the concept, and little moves here & there. Like the Mazurka Jump he does at approximately 3:33 into the program. And that weird upright spin that he does is totally him, I love it! :) Also, as I said before, my favorite part is the Ode to Joy, which begins at approximately 3:43. Brian throwing up his arms into the air with JOY at precisely 4:09 really gets me going, lol. :D Which makes it all the more disappointing when he doesn't continue that joy throughout the most important part -- the footwork! -- this calls for pure unfettered joy!, running across the ice, face lighting up with emotion, giving it his all with conviction & determination & speed!!!! He loses speed by throwing in moves that really don't connect to the music, and throwing the moves away as well. In fact I'd rather see him do less moves than try to throw in as many as possible, which only makes it look cluttered (like the way ladies spins looked when they tried too many moves, trying to get all the points that they could). From an aesthetic perspective it doesn't look good.

Still, I realize this program is brand new, and this was Brian's first debut, thus errors here & there is understandable (e.g. he almost fell at 4:43), as well nervousness plays a part. He just seemed relieved at the end, and a tad embarrassed, which he shouldn't be, it was a fine first outing! Keep with it, Brian, don't give up!!!! I can see a masterpiece by the time Worlds comes round! :) *thumbs up*

Somehow, Nadine, talking about moving through the footwork with !JOY! makes me want to see Michelle Kwan skate to Beethoven's 9th :) In many ways, her final footwork sequence, more even than the spirals was the highlight of her programs for me, and I could so see it to the Ode to Joy!.

Well that's why you're a Michelle Fan, and I'm an Oksana Fan. :) It's all good. :)

But for now I want to see Brian Joubert and his interpretation of this masterpiece.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of Joubert and Beethoven's 9th - here is a nice scene from one of my favorite films about music:
"Copying Beethoven."

And good for Brian for trying this. I honestly thought when I heard about Brian's music choice he would be using a techno/ remix version
I may actually root for him this year. :)

I know exactly what you mean. There was nothing like watching Michelle Kwan's final footwork sequences after she nailed all her jumps. NOBODY shows such passion in the footwork sequences... except maybe Alexei Yagudin.
I felt the same way about Sasha's footwork sequences actually. They had a different feel than Michelle but it in many ways they were a highlight of her programs for me.
But the idea of Michelle doing Beethoven's 9th!!! Why d'you have to go and say that Doris?? It's like showing a kid a hot toy he will probably never get

Yup! You said it, Layfan. Well, in our dreams. I'll add it to the list of all the other things I wanted to see Michelle skate to, like Faure chamber music and the third movement of the Botticelli Triptych of Respighi. This is one of the reasons God gave us imaginations, I guess.
